Theft at resort leaves black mark on dive trip
We stayed April 30th to May 6th 2014 for a diving holiday
THE DIVING: We went there to dive the WW2 wrecks of Coron Bay. Despite some initial poor visibility, they were great dives. The dive operation was well run by a German guy called Jojo. He was very personable, and organised good dives for us with dive buddies of similar experience/abilities. Our dive guides were local Filipinos who were excellent. We mostly got to dive with Ebing, who was great. We especially enjoyed our dives on the Irako Maru (the big refrigeration vessel) and the Okikawa Maru (the oil tanker). Jojo kindly fixed my free flowing regulator for me. Sangat is the closest resort to the wrecks and therefore only a short boat ride to the dive sites. If you are a diver I would personally find this way more preferable to the long haul trip on a Bangka boat from Coron.
THE RESORT: The resort is pretty much as advertised. The setting is peaceful & quite lovely. The beach is nice - not the best swimming beach but not bad. Because the rooms have no power during the day for fans, if there is no sea breeze they are just too hot to stay inside. We were out diving so it did not matter too much to us. The mosquito nets we could not use, they were suffocating with zero airflow. The food was not to my husbands tastes, I personally thought it was pretty good. There was plenty of it, with 2 choices of mains, vegetables, rice, salad, soup and lots of fresh fruit. I was worried about the cold showers but it was so hot they were a welcome "luke warm" relief.
THE THEFT: Unfortunately the TSA locks were picked on our suitcase and we had $26.00 US & 5000 pesos stolen from our money belt. It was not all our cash, we think the thief was trying to be sneaky, hoping the missing money was not noticed, but we're looking at a good chunk of change here - around $140 US dollars. Do not be stupid like we were - lock all your valuables in the safe deposit box they have available at the front desk.
There are no locks on the rooms at the resort. All seems very relaxed and easygoing with lots of smiles from everyone etc when you arrive. Do not let this give you a false sense of security and take away from the fact that the Philippines is poor third world country where petty theft is a problem.
This was not an opportunist act - this was purposeful and willful! It only takes one thief to leave a black mark on your holiday.
We did email the owner a couple of times regarding this incident. He replied once with a polite if somewhat patronising reply that he did not believe staff could have done this, he believed we were convinced of our loss, but sincerely hoped it was a miscalculation/mistake on our part-as it had been with previous guests in the past who thought they'd been robbed. He offered us a free night for 2 at Sangat resort, claimed his housekeepers had been with him for a long time with no theft in 20 years of operation & the staff were not capable of picking locks.
Well, time to wake up and smell the coffee. The zero theft period is officially over, and no we won't be back for our free night. If one or maybe more staff were not capable of picking locks then that only leaves the other guests or the aliens from outer space as the culprits. I don't believe it was another guest.
There are many staff working at Sangat resort- some of them way too young to have possibly been working there for a long time. The owner who emailed us was not even there during our stay. We did not miscalculate - we counted our money and knew exactly how much we had when we locked it in our suitcase after we arrived at Sangat.
I'm not saying don't stay there, it's a pretty good dive resort. The majority of staff are probably honest. All I'm saying is don't be blinded by the friendly smiles and the relaxed atmosphere just because your not in a big city like Manila. Protect your property and don't expect any support from the owner if you have an incident like we did. You are a guest who has been and gone and your concerns will be ever so politely blown off.
Unique Quality: Fast boats and closest accommodation to Coron Bay wrecks. On-site dive centre.
Directions: The resort will arrange transport from the airport to the resort by van and then boat.
Palawan's BEST DIVING resort ever!
I would say.. WOW for Sangat! The island offers EVERYTHING that you would want and need for a perfect vacation. There's snorkeling, kayaking, diving, trekking, sailing, Etc... plus you won't have to pay for each of these services (except for diving). Actually, you will only pay for two things , cocktail drinks from the bar and the diving activity. The rest is FREE ( as part of the accommodation package I guess) Ohh I shall not forget that the food were mouthwatering, too! We had a great gustatory experience, yeah.
Unique Quality: It is one of a kind for an island resort. It is situated where typhoon pass on the opposite side, so even when it rains everyday (due to typhoon), you can still enjoy Sangat activities. The beach front alone offers the best coral garden PLUS a very rich marine diversity.
