CasaLinda Inn: 3Cs (Cozy, Clean, Cheap!)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • I stayed in this inn by the strength of VT members tips. I am glad I did. It is just 7 minutes from the airport by tricycle and you can actually walk from the airport to the inn if you care to. :) Most who stay in this inn are repeat costumers, people who seek quiet and simple place to make a base for their activities in Palawan/Puerto Princesa.

Casa Linda is within easy walking distance to good restaurants and souvenir shops. The inn also has a small restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Casa Linda's U-shaped structure is made out of native materials, much like a giant sized nipa hut. The rooms are clean and well-maintained. There is a gazebo in the middle of the garden where guests can spend their day reading or just lounging around.

The double sharing room costs P750 (US$14), it has an efficient airconditioning unit and has its own t/b. My only gripe with the room we got is that it had no hot water. A good thing that I was so used to taking cold showers :)

The kitchen staff (Roger and Shirley) are very helpful and the front desk staff (Chat and Cess) are efficient and friendly. Even the chambermaid, Aling Elsa is very nice.

Casa Linda Inn: Country-style dwelling in the city
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The inn's structure is so reminiscent of native houses in the countryside - one level but elevated from the ground. The roof is made from nipa, the walls from sawali, the floor from wide wooden planks, and the frame from bamboo. However the bathrooms are modern despite the absence of hot water. A well tended inner garden has a gazebo at the center where guests can converge, read or simply relax.

The inn has 11 rooms with a choice between aircon and fan. They also have a stock room where you can leave your things and an ensuite bathroom where you can freshen up in case you arrive prior to check in time of 12nn.

The staff are very accommodating and friendly. They could arrange your transport and day trips at no additional cost. And being locals, they share valuable tips - must see, must eat, must avoid, etc.

A unique practice (which I failed to abide by) is the taking off of footwear when entering the inn. I wasn't aware of it until another guest called my attention. Well, it is not strictly implemented (nor followed), but it was a new experience for me.

    Casa Linda: Native feeling
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Nice hotel/inn in Palawan's capital. The A/C bungalows are made of concrete and bamboo, and you have to leave your shoes in the reception area, which makes it kind of quiet and relaxed. We paid 750 pesos for a double room w/bath (cold water only). Good location and many great restaurants within walking distance. The hotel also has good deals on massage and tours around the island (city tour, Honda Bay tour and Underground River tour)

The hotel is build around a nice garden. You'll find people here having a beer and/or reading a book. The only thing that bothered us a bit was the cock that started waking people up in the middle of th night, but this happens all over the country...

I came across with the name of the pension thru browsing the net. I just knew it was the place we were loking floor simply because it was unique. All rooms are made of indigenous materials giving you more tastes of nature. It has a great view of the Puerto Bay and the location of the place is a little off from the national road that gives more quietness conducive for a very good rest. Ms. Maribel, the very nice attendant of the pension, arranged the tours for us at very low rates. All the staff are very helpful and hospitable. Their restaurant on the 4th floor was very homey with karaoke for late night drinking. Rooms are clean and have hot & cold shower. It also has credit card facilityAltogether Puerto Pension is highly recommended. Their superior room cost P1090 pesos ($21) only for an overnight stay with free breakfast and airport transfers.

Puerto Pension: Why so highly rated?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • It all started when I checked into the Puerto Pension – a highly recommended place among virtualtourists. The place looked a little impressive than the photos on the website – but hey, which hotel doesn’t? My room was adequate and had all the basics I generally like: hot water, clean sheets on a firm bed plus the niceties of TV and aircon.

The place is ok – but certainly doesn’t live up to its reputation. I guess what stands out most is an indifferent management. They just don’t seem to care very much. The specific issues were:

    * the ‘free’ breakfast ended up having a charge (or they completely left me out on some of the possible extras) as a product of having me incorrectly fill out an order sheet. When I figured this out the second day, I asked the obvious question and got a clear answer. But clearly, no one at Puerto Pension is looking out for you.

    * The tours they arranged were underwhelming. The first – one of the multi-prong see & go types had a guide who spoke little English and a warped sense of time (called for a 20 minute stop and cut it short after 7; said we would stop for 10 minutes that became a half hour). To add insult to injury, a very early morning confirmation call woke me for a 1 pm tour. The second tour was better but there was about a 30 minute waiting period to deal with various startup hassles.

    * The final injury was also time-related. I wanted to grab my breakfast and catch a bus to El Nido. Before eating, I asked that my bill be prepared. After a quick bite, I found they hadn’t even begun to prepare a bill. Not a big deal, but precious minutes were lost. Those minutes would have made the difference in me being on the El Nido bus instead of watching it pull away...

Close to the baywalk and the church

Very homey accommodation. Ten minutes from the airport and situated between the pier and the main bus and jeepney terminal. Very convenient being near the city centre.

Rooms are air conditioned and with balconies with wooden tables and chairs, hot and cold shower, cable coloured TV and mini bar amenities.

I have recommended this pension to a couple of my friends and they too enjoyed their stay. You will be surprised with their reasonable room rates that includes breakfast. See website I provided below for detailed information.

Three minutes away from Puerto Bay Walk Boulevard and it is a great panoramic view from the roof deck bar/cafe.

  • Where to stay: Puerto Pension

We stayed at Puerto Pension for 3 nights. Rate is P980/night for their twin aircon room. This already includes breakfast and roundtrip transfer. Make sure also that you buy your own water outside and just put it in the fridge. Our contact there is Bel. You can check out their site at http://www.pal-onl.com/pension/. If you're going to make a reservation, make sure to call them too after you sent an email.

That's Bel in the picture and the driver who will pick you up from the airport. Photos of the place can be seen from their website. Their restaurant has a commanding view of the bay.

    puerto pension inn: sweet lodging!

  • initially.. what captured our interest was their sign that says "NO BROWNOUTS" .. we wanted that assurance since palawan is known for brownouts and mosquitoes.. well fortunately, you could trust their signs ;)

clean spacious rooms, hot & cold bath, cable tv, published rates include breakfast, friendly & accommodating staff..

they also arrange tours around the city .. which is highly recommended, since their packages are quite reasonable and very convenient - there were only 4 of us but they didn't make us share the tour with the other guests - their drivers are really nice and friendly

unique structure.. unique landscape (native style, with the bamboo and all)

our rooms each had a fridge filled with beer, bottled water, iced tea, chocolate bars, etc.
which you can consume (at about 20% markup from regular store prices)

if you got the skills - you could get a good bargain here ;P

Owned by an American and his Filipina wife, Casalinda is the best place in town if you're looking for native authenticity. The peace and quiet of its off-road location helps create a relaxed, island mood, as does the tropical courtyard lined with palm and banana trees, where you can grab a lawn chair and just hang out. Like Casalinda's native neighbors, rooms are constructed of bamboo, rattan, and suwali walls, and provide little more than the basic 5-inch foam mattress and air-conditioning in eight of the units. The trade-off here is the lack of hot water, but if you can handle it for a day or two, the ambience and price can't be beat.

    P750 (US$15) double with A/C; 450 ($9) double with fan
