We stayed in the Copthorne Kings Hotel for the 2 nights of our Stop-Over with Singapore Airlines. This was the only hotel offered by the package tour organizer we booked the flight and this stop over but it was worth it. It is a 3 1/2 star hotel. Its location is still quite good (only approx. 3 to 5 kms from the center) and it offers everything we needed. Breakfast buffet in the morning (not overwhelming but o.k.) and a nice Swimming Pool, where one can relax after somewhat exhausting sightseeing tours. The rooms are nicely furnished but we were not very lucky though and got a non-balcony room. Not to worry, as it was only for 2 nights. I assume, we would have received one on insisting but we did not bother. We arrived very early in the morning ( 8 h) and the good thing was, that we were able to move to our room straight away, not having to wait until normal check-in time(at 14.00 h). A definite PLUS after a 13 hours long flight, which enables one to jump under the shower, get fresh and have a whole day free ahead in Singapore/Sentosa (instead of waiting for one's room to become free and cleaned and only after that being able to store one's luggage! Definitely a better solution!).
We paid only approx. 81 Euro per person for a 2-nights-Stop-Over inclusive breakfast buffet and a half day sightseeing tour (via a package tour organizer here in Germany where we also booked all our flights). The hotel is not direct in the center but quite near (3 to 5 kms - not sure!) and it is opposite the Singapore River, just a (big) street and another hotel in between them. Nice walks along the river (also in direction center) are possible! | | | | New Park Hotel: Located in Little India Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
This hotel was average, its a medium class hotel and quite basic which did not exactly bother me but when I revisit Singapore though I will stay somewhere else. I remember the rooms being SO hot - the AC wasnt that great and it smelt a little musty.*
It has a pool - fab for cooling off, a restaurant and a shopping centre underneath. Located in Little India, its completly safe, but for a young female I felt a little uneasy late at night outside the hotel as I was here during the Deepvali festival the district was full of natives and I stuck out like a sore thumb with my pale skin colour! All in all, fine, clean, staff helpful and friendly - Dont go expecting an outstanding Far Eastern City hotel - its not! Its basic, clean, well located and the staff are helpful - Raffles its not! | | | | The Inn Crowd Hostel version 2: The hostel you will WANT to come back to! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
I stayed at the InnCrowdHostel in Dunlop St., at the outskirts of Little Inda, a mere 10 mins from the Little India MRT station. S$18 per night for a clean bunk bed, air-conditioned, breakfast included, Internet access, a self-catered kitchen (if you insist on being ridculous and not eating out in Singapore), clean showers and plenty of hot water, and the most helpful staff you can imagine, it was a bargain. I found it on the Internet months before, and decided to book. I never regretted it for the 2 nights I spent there, and if I ever go to Singapore again (I will!), this is where I would want to stay. Mind you, this is Little India, and at night the streets are teeming with people, cars honking, food stalls and market stalls all over, and it really feels like Calcutta or anywhere else in India. It's an amazing place to stay at. Remember to check out Aussie Mal's Pub, a few houses to the left when you exit. The Indian street restaurant a few houses down from there will actually deliver your food to Mal's. Ask Mal (Malcolm), and he will guide you to it.
Friendly ambience, very helpful staff, they even try to organise trips and outings. I was busy with my stuff one of the days I was there and when I got back at night I realised that I could have joined some folks for a night safari tour to the zoo. I would have loved that! | | | | Robertson Quay Hotel: Good value hotel by the river! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
I stayed at the Robertson Quay Hotel for 3 nights in December 2005. A couple of weeks previous I had stayed at the excellent Sleepy Sam's Hostel in Singapore (see other tip) and would have returned there but for the fact that I wanted a little more luxury (air conditioning, satellite TV, private bathroom) for my final few days in Singapore. So, while in Kuala Lumpur I searched for a reasonably priced hotel (in either the Orchard Road or Singapore River districts) and spotted this hotel on www.hostelworld.com. The price per night was approx. 32 GBP (including a very good breakfast) which, while considerably more expensive than the hostel, was still much cheaper than most hotels in the surrounding area. For my money, I got a small (but clean and well-equipped) en-suite room in a very good location overlooking Singapore River. While the room (a "superior queen" room) was small, it was ok for me as I was alone. I suspect the room is used to accommodate couples, in which case it would get kind of cramped in there. The facilities in the room included tea and coffee making facilities, a large comfortable bed, a good air conditioning system, satellite TV (with various international channels), a safe deposit box, a telephone, a dressing table/desk, a bedside clock and a wardrobe. Maid service was daily. Breakfast consisted of cereals, toast and jam, 2 different types of eggs (from hard boiled, scrambled, fried and omelettes), sausages, baked beans, coffee, tea and ice cold fruit juice. Breakfast is buffet-style and you can eat as much as you like. If your room rate doesn't include breakfast, it can be purchased for S$8 (approx 3 GBP) per day. Facilities in the hotel include a swimming pool and a gym (neither of which I ever visited), Internet access in reception and snacks for sale in the ground floor restaurant. Free luggage storage is also offered.
The best thing about this hotel is its riverside location and the fact that it is much cheaper than other hotels in a similar location. The nightlife of Clarke Quay and Mohamed Sultan Road can both be reached on foot in about 5 minutes, while Orchard Road is a 10-15 minute walk away. Many rooms (mine included) have great views over the river and are clean and well-equipped, despite being on the small side. A good value, mid-range hotel in a great location.
