Character Hotel
I just love hotels with some character and this place has it in spades. Ok so its not antiseptic and - shudder - the tiling in the bathroom isn't perfect - but if squeeky clean anonymity is what you want then it's easier to find than individuality. I checked in in the evening and ok the place isn't crawling with staff and I had to pull my own suitcase but check in was efficient and 5 mins after arriving I,m in the most fabulous room you can imagine. Its one of the larger ones at the front and full of character furniture and loads of space. Old fashioned or classically elegent - depends on your point of view - I loved it. The only criticism would be that the double glazing installed behind the original shutters is a little severe - I like to be able to let the air in !, apart from that it was just perfect. Tub was large and the shower powerful. the bathroom is marble and has everything you need. The street outside is vibrant and full of life - but its not intrusive and just adds to the flavour. I never made breakfast but did eat at the attached Italian restaurant which is top quality (and top dollar).
A sense of a building in touch with it's surroundings and it's heritage.
I had a late flight out and the guys at the hotel provided a courtesy room to shower in and change after a day of business before I headed to the airport.
Next trip to Singapore and I'm going to book one of the garden rooms - can't wait.... It's in an old building on a street of similar aged properties. The whole Duxton Rd area is full of small bars and nightclubs - BUT- I found then unobtrusive and the volume of sound did not trouble me at all. There is an expensive and very nice Italian Restaurant attached to the hotel and many local eating places within a few minutes stroll
