Singapore's nice hotel
Millenium & Copthorne International has a good reputation so I booked a twin room for 3 nights when I travelled there with my father.
Room is spacious (the beds are not narrow as in other hotels), bathroom amenities are sufficient and most importantly, although there are many guests in the hotel, the employees make sure that no trespassers (or possible thieves) roam around.
The hotel is not really near the subway stations (Chinatown and Outram Park) but if you like to walk then it's totally fine because rooms are quiet and clean.
Unique Quality: Its restaurant, Princess Terrace, is said to provide the best buffet in Singapore. We tried the dinner and we enjoyed the food a lot! I actually liked the desserts which are prepared while you eat. If you like seafoods, shrimps are a plenty.
There's a small a la carte corner. The crew members are very attentive which made our stay worthwhile.
Live singing at the opposite side of the restaurant where you can also order foods and drinks.
Taxis are a plenty. You need not book one to get to the airport or to the city centre.

Middle Class Hotel near River
This is a good middle class hotel only 10 minutes walk from Clarke Quay, the rooms are nice and clean with views over the river. We didn't make use of the swimming pool but it looked nice.
Breakfast was ok as well, some Japanese food as well as Chinese, noodles, eggs in variations and the usual bread, jam and fresh fruit variety.

Changed Name
This hotel used to be Novotel Orchid Singapore but now changed management to Copthorne Orchid Hotel.
Have stayed here a few times because this where Malaysian Airlines coach from Senai airport, Johor, Malaysia will drop off passengers flying in Senai and wanting to continue to Singapore.
As it is not walking distance to Orchard Road, have to take a taxi to get there. Quite environment with Asian theme restaurant that is worth checking out.

Great value for money
Away from the touristy Orchard Road and the glitzy Central Business District the Copthorne Kings is situated in a quiet corner of the Singapore river.
Rooms are spacious and clean; amenities are ample and they provide free shuttle to Orchard Road (it's about 10 minutes bus ride). I enjoyed walking along the river in the morning and catching the subway at Clarke Quay.
Unless you need to be close to the CBD you will enjoy their favourable rates and with the abundance of taxi's in Singapore I never had any problem getting into CBD in time.

a good base
A nice hotel, and a good base for Singapore. its not close to a MRT (5 mins in taxi) but taxis are cheap and there is a free bus to orchad rd and china town. The hotel is close to the Singapore river and you can take a nice walk along it into clarke quay (15 mins) for a good choice of restaurants and bars.
For breakfast most things are on offer, toast, cerial, eggs cooked to you likeing, fruit, tea coffe, etc.
Rooms are not very big in the main part of the hotel and are smaller still in the tower rooms, however they are clean and comfortable. must note that we had a joining room and with the joining doors it made the rooms very noisy, i had to go next door twice to tell the people in the next room to be quiet. not sure how the none ad-joining rooms fair?
The main rooms have baconies but due to the hotel upgrade in 2004 there is very little space on them (no room for chairs)
The penang buffet evening meal was very popular, we did not eat there but every evening when we got back to the hotel the restaurant was always full.
The hotel has a very nice pool area which is very quiet in the day, we stayed for 3 weeks and on most days there was only us around the pool. it may not suite everyone but it was great for us. there is also a jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. there is also a small fitness center.
Over all would highly recomend this hotel, its a good base to expore Singapore and is no to far from the quays. before we arrived i email the hotel and made some requests, and on arriving and those request were met. (top marks)
There are better hotels in singapore, but for the room rate The Copthonre Kings is a hard hotel to beat.

Copthorne King's
Copthorne King's is situated near the historic Singapore River and is close to the business and convention/exhibition districts of Shenton Way and Suntec City. It is also near the exciting shopping and entertainment circuit of Chinatown, Orchard Road, Clarke Quay, Boat Quay and Robertson Quay.

how much is a typical 3 course meal and a bottle of wine in a middle of the road type restaurant
RE: copthorne kings hotel
Copthorne King's is about 10 mins walk to Clarke Quay across the road. Along the way, there are some restaurants and bars (beside the river) at Robertson Quay which are quieter and provide a nicer view of the river. The hotel is okay and there are regular bus services to downtown City Hall and Orchard Road but it is not within the commercial or shopping belt of Singapore. It requires a fair bit of walking or taking public transport.
There are many different kinds of restaurants in Singapore with wildly different prices so it is hard to give a ballpark figure. Most Singaporeans eat 'hawker fare' food which is cheap and usually delicious and usually about $10 or so for 2 people. For fine dining expect to pay around $80 and more for restaurant cuisine.

HI! Geo: Long way from Manchester, mate. The previous 2 VTers had more or less painted where your hotel would be. It's a little off the main tourist trails and the nearest shopping mall within walking distance (say 20 minutes?) would be Great World City. As mentioned, either your hotel has shuttle buses to the main tourist areas such as Chinatown, Orchard Road & City Hall or you can grab the free shuttle buses at Great World. Alternatively, you can grab a taxi. Travel within the city should not cost you any more than S$8 one way.
The river is a good place to take a stroll/walk in the evening - the authorities having gone to great pain to decorate it up with lights and colours and you may walk all the way to Robertson Quay. There's a great French/Fusion restaurant there by the name of St.Pierre, which you may want to have a try.
There are several tiers of eating in Singapore. It really depends on how upmarket the restaurant is. A 3 course meal and a good bottle of wine could cost up to S$100 per person. Lawry's for example, charges an arm and a leg. (http://www.lawrys.com.sg/lawrysmenu.asp?cat=2)
Just my 2 cents worth.
