Singapore Budget Style

A value for money budget hotel. As a fairly regular visitor to Singapore my wife and I are not afraid of using a reasonable quality budget hotel as it gives us the chance to visit again at a later date and not blow oursavings all in one go. The price works out at around £30 GBP per night and the accomodation is very basic. A bed in a small room with a TV, air conditioning, a wet room shower and toilet, a hair dryer and in the corridor a hot water machine to make up the two daily sachets of "all in one coffee" that are supplied or as we did our own Red Bush Tea bags we brought with us. You also get two cartons of water per person each day. There is no dining room, so the price is room only. The area is to say the "interesting" numerous eating houses on Geylang Road, a two minute walk away or if you prefer slightly more modern and tidy surroundings there is Guillemard Village Food court. A little more pricy than the food court is Fatty Weng's Restaurant on Guillemard Road by Guillemard Crescent serving excellent food a meal for six people will only set you back about $130. Now that the Circle line has opened the nearest MRT station is Mountbatten about five minutes gentle stroll between Fatty Weng's and the old Singapore Badminton Hall (now a prawn fishing restaurant) past the Autism School. Trains are every 7 minutes and take 12 minutes to get to Dhoby Ghaut interchange.

Rooms were cleaned daily and clean towels provided each day, the only downsides are the small size of the room, the extra firm mattress with a leatherette cover, some traffic noise from the very busy Guillemard road and although it didn't bother my wife and I, you are right next to the red light district. Houses with red house numbers are the ones where the business goes on! Should you be tempted, I understand you have to be wary of the girls working in the street as they do not undergo the health checks that are mandatory for the workers in the red number houses.

Unique Quality: Basic value for money accomodation with close access to MRT and eating houses. Having saved a large amount of money on accomodation you now have money for travel on the MRT, visiting attractions, eating out, drinking Tiger beer, buying gifts to take home.

YMCA
http://www.hotel-web.com/ymca/yi-sing/

did u mean YMCA at Fort Canning? I think this will be the best in terms of location. Near to Dhoby Ghaut MRT station. most accessible.

Summer View
http://www.summerviewhotel.com.sg/index2.html
It is a 3* hotel near Bugis MRT station.

Fragrance Crystal

Suggest u give this hotel a miss cos it not in city centre and in the red light district.

Hi there
I stayed at Fort Canning Lodge. There's quite near Dhoby Ghaut MRT station. The room was fine but small and the hot water wasn't seems so hot as it should be.The bad thing is you have to walk up hill to the hotel (there are around 40steps of cement stair) But the best thin gof this hotel is,it's a walk distance to Mohamed Sultan Road where "Siam Supper Club" located. I love that club.. nice club :>

cheers

Taxi Fare

by Uvex

Does anyone know the price for taking Taxi from the Airport to Fragrance Crystal Hotel.

Is Fragrance Crystal located in the Red Light District? If so, should I avoid hanging out too late?

Thank you for your help.

RE: Taxi Fare

by pebs

Airport to hotel shouldnt cost more than US20 (depending on traffic, surcharge).

Fragrance Hotel - Crystal is located at 50 Lorong 18 Geylang, Singapore 398824.
Lorong is the street. Even # are usually the red light district. Odd # are the food heaven (street stalls selling yummy food). Lorong 13 has the famous frog leg porride and beef noodles just opposite each other.

Typically, it should not cost more than S$15. Or, you may want to use the Airport Shuttle Service that can take you there for S$7:

http://www.changiairport.com.sg/changi/level3.jsp?ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474395181061&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302023859&CONTENT%3C%3Ecnt_id=10134198673213836&bmUID=1144471838541

Geylang, despite it being a red light district, is quite safe. Seedy, but quite safe. Practice the usual vigilance as you would in any big city and you will be fine.

Just my 2 cents.... :-)

RE: RE: Taxi Fare

yes airport shuttle bus is good too, but U need to transfer to a taxi to get to your hotel.

An even cheaper alternative is the MRT (metro). Its connected to Changi Airport Terminal 2 (if you land in T1, just take the free internal skytrain). You can take the MRT to station "City Hall" (most central in city) or "Kallang" or "Aljunied" (suburbs) and catch a taxi from there. But there may be restriction on the size of luggage allowed on the mrt (check http://www.transitlink.com.sg/), and you need to change metro line to get into the city. But Singapore metro line is very easy to use, with clear directions.

The Fragrance Crystal Hotel is located in the red light district of Geylang. Besides the numerous food and fruit stalls in the area, there are also brothels in the side lanes (the `lorongs'). There is no problem hanging out late in Geylang but just be careful as you would in any city. From Changi Airport to the hotel, the taxi ride would costs around S$15.

Hi, I can comment on Q3 only..

Budget hotels are provided the Fragrance Group. They have various names under their banner, eg Fragrance Crystal (69 SGD!), Emerald (69 SGD), Pearl, Sapphire, Ruby, Oasis, etc.

http://www.fragrancehotel.com/fragrance06/main.asp?action=location

Most of these are in the Geylang area (east), considered a bit of a red-light district, but it's not run-down or shady.

Their Waterfront one (beside the Bus Terminal) offers superior doubles/twins for 149 SGD.

For help on Q1 & 2, I suggest you consult member: balhannah's superb SG pages.

Enjoy sunny SG :-)
