Singapore's red light district hotel
Best for solo traveler and tolerant couples. This is in a sense a motel. The rooms can be rented for a couple of hours at a time to lovers, free-lancing girls and their customers. Walls are not that sound proof so at times you can hear love making sounds and noises, especially in the night.
The room I had was small, not that clean and paintwork was old. There was barely room for my bag. This motel is smack in the middle of the red light district but is rather convenient for food and drinks as the nearby coffee shops operate 24 hours. The MRT train station is less than 10 minutes' walk and takes you into the city or the Singapore airport.
Only 15 - 20 minutes by taxi to the Marina Bay Sands casino in the city.
Unique Quality: No unique facilities but alright if you enjoy watching the free lance girls plying their trade and trying to get customers.

Red Light District Hotel
Have stayed here many times as I pass through Singapore on my way to various points in South East Asia.
Unique Quality: Clean basic rooms, although small will fit the bill if only sleeping overnight. For longer stays you may want a hotel with bigger rooms in a different area. The fact it is in a red light district need not be a problem as the girls wont attack you but they will flirt with you to get your attention. If you politely ignore them they wont hassle you and the streets are quite safe to walk in. Cheap food is readily available in the Geylang area so you wont be short of a feed. Taxis are also easy to find in Geylang and its closeness to the MRT train is also a convenient selling point.

Fragrance Ruby
The Hotel was clean and was good for a comfortable night sleep. It is some distance from the city but there is a MRT (train) station within 10 minute walking distance. The MRT rivals the tube in London for its efficiency and is much cleaner and one can get to any destination in Singapore. The average fair is $1 USD. I traveled almost exclusively on the MRT and have no complaints. The area is filled with great local restaurants where you could eat all kinds of original Singapore cooking. The hotel was very cheap, about $25 USD per night.
The hotel however is in the red-light district. It is very obvious from all the girls around. But the area is still safe. I could wander about the area at 12 am without being troubled nor did I ever feel like I was in any kind of danger. Do not expect any amenities as it is a very much just a room and board type hotel. People however were friendly and kept out of your way.
The hotel in my opinion is great for a young budget-minded individual or a couple who don't mind walking and experiencing some of the less glamorous aspects of travel. For people who can't walk as much or for families this hotel is not the best of choices. But for $25 USD it was definitely worth it for me.

Fragrance Hotel - budget accommodation in Geylang
One of a small chain of budget hotels. Reasonable rooms at reasonable prices but nothing fantastic.
Room rates are S$48 for a standard room and S$53 for a superior. Add another S$10 for Saturday night stays.
