More about Fragrance - Joo Chiat

Stay in Geylang an save money.

by Terje1966

The hotels in the Lorong streets next to Geylang Road are really inexpensive. I stayed at the Fragrance hotel in Lorong 10(or something) and did not pay much. I also ate for as little as 3 Singapore dollar including a coca cola.
I spent a few evenings/nights wandering around in Gelylang Road and the Lorong streets and feeling safe and secure and the streets were crowded with people that were shopping and eating.
Geylangs connection with the city center was also easy and cheap.
The SMRT from Changi airport to city center is passing Geylang and the station name is Aljunied. Price to Raffles place or city center is a little more than 1 Singapore dollar and
it runs ewery 5 minutes.

Fragrance Joo Chiat

G'day,I have posted another question regarding Hotels in general in Singapore,as my wife and I are visiting for the first time in March 2006.
Just wondering if anyone has stayed at the Fragrance Joo Chiat, and would like to let us know what it's like, looks clean and the price is right.
Any comments?Much appreciated.

HI! Andrew:

Eunos MRT is your nearest MRT station and it is about 15-20 minutes walk away.

The Malay Village (a tourist sight) is there. There are plenty of Malay food around the area as well as boutique shops & coffeeshops.

If you look at the map, a little way down south and you will see all the Lorongs, which are actually within the Geylang enclave - the red light district of Singapore.

Thanks for the tip, looks a bit far away from everything and a bit close to Geylang.Going to book New Park,it's in the area we want, and looks great on their website.http://newpark.singapore.parkroyalhotels.com/s38698/photo_tour_10.html

Thanks for your help.

Fragrance Hotel is a love hotel. I think it's more established than Hotel 81 in this sector, although Hotel 81 advertises more frequently. I've never been to either place so can't say how it's like inside, but would imagine the noise and the stench! LOL

New Park Hotel is usually packed, advance booking absolutely necessary. It's a popular hotel with slightly more well-off Indians visiting relatives in the vincinity or shopaholics - their fav hangout is Mustafas. I used to work for a company which placed visiting customers from India there. Their feedback was largely positive, save for some rooms having thin walls and them being able to hear their neighbours when they're trying to get some good night's sleep. Also that they faced a little difficulty in getting cabs from there, compared to other hotels in other parts of town.

Hi, even though someone has written it already, I just want to mention too that this is a hotel where many customers tend to take the opposite sex for nocturnal activities. So unless you don't mind hearing the commotion through the walls, this might not be the right hotel to take your wife to...

thankyou all,we'll give the Geylang area a wide berth, going to stay at the Summerview, yeah I know I said New Park, but hey,I'm having too much fun changing my mind!(plus it's cheaper!)
Anyone been on the Singapore-duck,looks like fun?
WE looked at the Claremont, but they were so slow answering our reservation enquiries, then told us they were full, would we like a room at Aspinals?Took another 2 days to get prices, which was $95SGD without breakfast, and the only picture I could find was a pixellated bedroom shot which did not impress.
Anyway, enjoying researching Singapore and looks so good we might have to move there!
Andrew.

Could anyone who has stayed in this hotel give any feedback on it? I understand that it's a budget place and that there several branches in the city but I would assume that their standards of service would be the same (or am I wrong?).

Actually if you are staying in Fragrance Hotel, you may want to consider the Hotel 81 chain as well. According to a recent review of both hotel chains done in the Singapore's Straits Times, it was mentioned that the staff in Hotel 81 is more professional. The prices for hotels for either chain in the same locality are very similar too.

But if for some reason you had to stick with Fragrance Hotel, they are not too bad too, but those situated in the Geylang (red light district) can be a little to seedy for comfort.

Hope this helps.... :-)

I have some Hong Kong family friends who came to Singapore for a 5-day visit. They stayed at Hotel 81 Bencoolen (10 min walk from City Hall MRT station). It was cheap, convenient, pretty safe & they loved it. Go take a look at their website http://www.hotel81.com.sg/

RE: RE: Fragrance Hotel

They might not be in the best of neighborhoods, but are always very clean and safe as well as affordable.

btw, I have stayed at a Fragrance Hotel / 81 - staff was very nice. They give you a bottle of water daily as well as a cup of ramen.

Would appreciate any feedback about this hotel chain from anyone who has stayed in any of their 4 branches. I checked under the "hotels" tab at the top but no photo or comments about it. Thanks!

Basic no-frills hotel chain with clean rooms and functional finishing. Their website is at http://www.fragrancehotel.com. Like their main competitor, Hotel 81 Group (http://www.hotel81.com.sg), their hotels are mostly located in Geylang, which is the red light district of Singapore.

Thus, hotels from both Fragrance and Hotel 81 are often used are also known as "love hotels" in which couples can book their rooms by the hour. For ladies, I do not recommend them to stay at their Geylang branches because you may get uncomfortable stares from passerbys mistaking them for er... "not a tourist".

If you are looking for a hotel within a similar budget but with a better reputation and location, try the New 7th Storey Hotel (http://www.nsshotel.com). Otherwise, you can also consider Hotel 81 Bencoolen, which which is a few notches above the rest within the group.

Just my 2 cents.... :-)

I totally agreed with one half of the Wee Boys (Dark Ray)regarding the alternative hotels. For the same budget, you get a better location and conveniences with 7th Storey and Bencoolen 81.

Thanks for your comments! Unfortunately, the hotel comes with the tour package so there is no option for me. I have no problem with the bars around but it's still a safe area, right?

RE: RE: Fragrance Hotel

by DarkRay

Don't worry. As Sha had mentioned, it is still a safe area. Seedy, but safe ;-)

You will not go hungry in Geylang though. There are a lot of eateries there serving a wide variety of food.

Just my 2 cents.... :-)

RE: RE: Fragrance Hotel

Yup Singapore is generally safe most places and there is lots of good food round the clock at Joo Chiat area and Geylang. Many Singaporeans will drive there in the middle of the night to eat so you don't have to worry.

I have just backed form Sg and stayed in two Fragrance hotel (Crystal and Pearl),cost USD 22/night. Room is small but tidy (if you just want to have a simple shower and a bed), I stayed with my girl-friend, it is safe to walk through the "red light district" because the local people know your are tourist, always hold your friend's hand when walk throught the street is OK. They will stare at you but do nothing, just put your sunglasses on and they will know you are tourist and will not disturb you.
