Great hotel in the middle of Orchard
I've stayed here for 4 different stays. 2 2-night stays on regular rooms and 2 4 night stays in the crystal club floor. I would say I really had a pleasant stay. They have all the basic stuff needed for a hotel. When I was staying in crystal club floor, i definitely appreciated the complimentary breakfast, afternoon tea and cocktail drinks in crystal club lounge. The staff serving there was very accomodating and friendly as well.
Unique Quality: Relaxing place. Easy access to city. Across the street is paragon.

Clark Quay, Boat Quay and Mohammed Sultan Road - rows of pubs and watering holes - these 3 places are within walking distances of one another - nice chill places at weekdays nights, comes alive at Weekends.
Thumpers @ Goodwood Park Hotel (Orchard area) - Live band provides great music!
Alcohol is Singapore is pretty heavily taxed so expect S$8-12 per shot/beer.
Food:
Basically in Singapore, the best food are what the locals eat.
Newton Circus Hawker Centre, Lau Pat Sat (old market) - in town, Great local fare but pretty customised to tourists in my opinion.
Alternatively consider East Coast Park Hawker Centre for a nice sea breeze,
or the Lorongs (streets) of Geylang - basically its a red-light district filled with famous food establishment, food is cheap and good. No worries, its a pretty safe area actually and you can't get food better anywhere else. You need somebody familiar with the area though, as the eateries are scattered streets away from each other. Must try the "No-signboard Restaurant" crabs along the even numbered lorongs, all cabbies will know. Costs about S$30-50/person for a fulfilling meal (no alcohol).
Slightly more up-market. Fatty Wong's Restaurant across from Sim Lim Square (Bugis area) - Chinese food with South-east asian influence is amazing, must try! Lots of tourists and locals here - Costs about S$30-50/person for a fulfilling meal (no alcohol).

Haven't been in quite a while but remember Boat Quay and Clarke's Quay were jumping for nightlife. As far as food is concerned, the food is great in Chinatown, lots of little kiosks as well as some upscale excellent restaurants down there. I remember having good Indian food there too ironically. Wish I could help ya out more but don't really remember the names of places I went. Anyways good luck, your goign to have an awesome time :)
Recommendation hotels Orchard Road vicinity

My hubby and I will be visiting Singapore early October and would like some recommendations of hotels close to Orchard Road. We stayed Royal Scotts last year but were disappointed with the service. Mainly problems with them double charging the hotel rooms which tied up our Visa card, and not being happy with them taking a week to fix it up when they indicated it would be only 2 days and they'd phone to confirm which never happened. We loved the area and want to stay somewhere close to Orchard Road/Scott Road but this time I was thinking of maybe a boutique style hotel. We don't need a pool or extravagances and I don't want to pay more than $250 a night, less is also good:-) Good reliable service is my main criteria, now that hubby has his laptop it would be good if we could use that, air conditioning, close to the shops and transport and a clean room with own bathroom and air conditioning. Thank you for your help in advance.

Try Mandarin Meritus (around S$300 per day) or Orchard Parade Hotel (around S$235 per day). They both are on Orchard road. If you are looking for peace and tranquility and still would like to stay in close vicinity of Orchard road, you may try Orchard Grand Court (around S$280 per day)

Hi - We stayed at the Elizabeth. It was very nice (good service) and within walking distance of Orchard Road. They have internet access and rooms were under $200. Enjoy!

Elizabeth is quite a nice hotel (http://www.theelizabeth.com.sg), just that there will be a good amount of walking (and climbing) as its perched on a small hill. But it will fit all your criteria.
Another hotel that will work well is Holiday Inn Park View (http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/hi/1/en/hotel/SINPV/welcome) and I prefer this hotel due to its closer proximity to the shops.
If your budget can be increased, my recommendation is Orchard Hotel. It's a winner of multiple industry awards and is famed for their good service.

I would recommend Meritus Mandarin. It will be off your budget but definitely worth the stay. Located in the heart of the Orchard Road.
You may want to try cheaper alternatives located on the main shopping belt including Park Hotel @ Orchard ( opposite Meritus Mandarin ), Holiday Inn Park View or Le Meridien down the road.
I guess Elizabeth Hotel may be too far from the main shopping belt. It is tuck in one quiet corner with York Hotel, Goodwood Park Hotel. Might take 15 minutes to walk to the main shopping area. May be unsafe to walk at night. Would not recommend it to you.
As a tradeoff, you really have to decide the price or location or service is your utmost concern.
