Backpacker Spot

I looked for something a little closer in my price range. I stayed here for another one night and it was a good quality place to stay. I don't have any pictures. I had a room with air and private bath. The bathroom could've been a little better for the price. Yet, the room and the bathroom were both clean and offered everything you need for a short stay. It is located within a 5-10 min. walk to the MRT Dhoby Ghaut. Also, a short walk to the Bugis street center and Little India. There are a few places to get something to eat and have a beer.

Hotel 81 Bencoolen 3*

Hotel 81 Bencoolen sits right just outside the Central Business District (CBD).

You may visit the nearby attractions such as the National Museum, National Art Museum, Esplanade which are about 5 to 10 minutes away. The shopping centres like Orchard Road, City Hall, Bugis Junction and Marina Square are within walking distance too. Dont miss the Singapore Sling at the Raffles Hotel which is also walking distance away on Beach Road.

Try the local dishes at Kopitiam along Bras Basah Road and S-11 Eating House at the National Library.

The entertainment spots of Mohammed Sultan, Chjimes, Boat Quay and Clarke Quay are situated conveniently within a 2-km radius.

Budget Hotels

We booked 2 nights in Hotel81 Palace on Geylang 16. The Hotel81's in Singapore seem to be a network of budget hotels with a number of them in the Geylang area. It is best to get off the metro at Kellang and get a taxi from here. The cost was around 49$S (£19) per night and the rooms were fairly standard.

There is a reason for these hotels being budget which is because they are in a dodgy area, Hookerville. Some real hot hookers were outside the hotel though it is hard to tell what they were packing in their trunks, so I stuck with my girlfriend.

If you are just travelling out from the hotel using taxis it's perfect. The girlfriend wanted to stay on Orchard Road which not only would cost 2 times what we paid for the Palace, it also means the girlfriend will be shopping from dusk till dawn so it is probably best to stay away from here.

Singapore's Cheap Sleep

by boolateh about Hotel 81 Bencoolen

We're 3 adults and stayed in a superior plus room for SGD 119 a night. The location is really central, within the school district and near to SMU, and just a 5-minute walk to Orchard Road. Good area. Good views. Big bathroom with bathtub and huge dressing sink. Fresh fluffy white towels changed everyday. Bathroom equipped with tissue, toothbrush/paste, shower caps. Cleaned everyday. Linens changed everyday.

Cable TV and cool aircon. Very helpful receptionists. Good service.

I would recommend this particular location to everyone. I would stay here again! Hotel 81 Bencoolen. Great location. Near 24-hour internet cafe. Near Bugis shopping district. Near Orchard. Near 2 MRT stations (Dhoby Gaut and Bugis)

Hotel 81 - for family and backpacker

by ahcoln

Hotel81 is Singapore budget hotel chain, with 19 hotels and 2000 rooms, located over different parts of Singapore. Quite convenient at the lower range price, around SD$50 per room per night you can get a comfortable room with basic facilities. At certain area this hotel also provide accomodation for backpacker at price as low as SD$25 per night per pax.

Budget Hotels

by srd130 about Hotel 81

This is a large chain of budget hotels in Singapore's red light district. Overall, I can honestly say this was the best value of any hotel I stayed in. It was about 25 USD per night. The rooms were recently rennovated and furnished. The catch is that they also charge by the hour - actually its a 2 hour "transit rate". So basically about half the people in the hotel are using it for sex, but you should be bothered by this. I think they quarantine these guests on seperate floors - the most you will be confronted with is sharing an elevator with a prostitute and customer.

The rooms have A/C, good clean sheets, cable television, and hot water. Exceptional value.

Hotel 81 provides "no frills" rooms but yet rooms are clean and comfortable. There are new branches in town, in Chinatown and Bencoolen Street

RE: Transit visa

by DarkRay

No, visa-on-demand is not available in Singapore. You can read more about the visa requirements at:

http://app.ica.gov.sg/travellers/entry/entry_requirements.asp

Two great place to stay in the city are the New 7th Storey Hotel (http://www.nsshotel.com) and Hotel 81 Bencoolen, which are in the city. Hotel 81 Bencoolen also current have a "stay and tour" promotions for 2 nights which may fit your requirements. Read more about it at:

http://www.hotel81.com.sg/promo_bencoolen.html

If you are looking for a hostel, New 7th Storey Hotel offers dorm beds as well. Close by, you can also consider Bugis Backpackers (http://www.bugisbackpackers.com). You may also be interested in the highly popular The Inn Crowd (http://www.the-inncrowd.com) situated in Little India.

Hope this helps.... :-)
