Not so good experience
The service was very poor and slow. Buffet Breakfast price was included in our room price, but the buffet spread wasn't very impressive. In the Indian section they had Rice and curry for breakfast!
Unique Quality: However, the hotel is located in the City center on Orchard road and so has easy access to shopping malls etc.

Big must not be beutiful
The Mandarin Hotel on Orchard Road towers over the city center of Singapore like a huge citadel.
It`s the right venue for anybody, who likes to stay in an anonymous fortress in one of the 1200 guest-rooms.
Unique Quality: Meritus Mandarin Hotel is in the heart of Singapore's business, shopping and entertainment district. The hotel is easily accessible via two Mass Rapid Transit train stations-Orchard and Somerset.
Its rooms are not very comfortable, dark and not very well designed, yet equipped with the usual amenities, coffee-machines, hair-dryer etc..

One night in Meritus Mandarin Hotel
Stayed one night in March 2006. I made reservation through theirwebsite and chose the most inexpensive one (S$172 nett). They gave me a room in South Tower (the old one), despite that their offer in the website for my package is a room in Grand Tower. I was to lazy to argue.
I had to waite for a couple minutes just to get in the elevator, as they are renovating the building.
There is no safety lock (additional lock) on the door. Make me a bit worried as I am travelling alone, and even thinked to put a chair behind the door.
Someone was banging on my door at 3.00 AM. Turned out it was the door of a room next to mine, this person kept on going in and out for sometime and slammed the door for several times in the process. Really disturbing as the room is not soundproof!!
I may stay here again though, as it is in the ORCHARD!! What more do you expect from that inexpensive price?

Living in the heart of Orchard Road
If you love shopping,then the more you should choose Meritus Mandarin Hotel.It is located on the stretch of orchard,facing HMV and just beside Ngee Ann City (Takashimaya).
Unique Quality: I guess the most unique characteristics of Meritus Mandarin Hotel is the revolving restaurant at it's 39th floor.

Excellent location
If you know any Singapore - get them to book for you - becos rates are specials if you check in with a Singapore Identity. This is a rather old hotel - still trying to update its facility. Somehow the old smell lingers on... which i am not too amused though.
I stayed there in the 1970s as a schooling kid for months length waiting for my apartment to be readied...it was such a joke - a kid lugging her school bag living out in a hotel room!!!!
Unique Quality: The location is great. There is new and old wing... if you are looking to add an additional bedding - go for the old wing as rooms are usually larger.
If you stay more than one night ask for their complimentary chicken rice at the Chatterbox coffeehouse. It beats having the buffet breakfast - yuks

Middle of Orchard Road
This is one gigantic hotel... 1200 rooms.
Get a room in the main tower - the rooms in the south tower are dismal.
Unfortunately, service and cleanliness have deteriorated in the past few years. Unless the location is a top priority, this hotel cannot be recommended.
Unique Quality: 1200 rooms!
Chatterbox is its 24-hour coffee shop - its chicken rice is famous, although pricey. Nonetheless a good starting point to sample Singapore's national dish.

Right on Orchard Road
We arrived late at night at the hotel, and the service from the start was great. They checked us into the exact room that I had requested (non-smoking, high floor) and everything was spotlessly clean. The room was nice and big, as was the bathroom, which had a shower spa (massaging jets of water that shoot out of the side of the shower) which was great after a long day of sightseeing and shopping.
We were on the 27th floor, with a veiw down Orchard Road, which was great.
The room was cleaned everyday, and the amenities in the room were beyond what we expected.
The hotels has a fitness centre, as well as a pool and pool bar (which we sampled) and a business centre.
As you can imagine from a 5 star hotel, anything that you bought from within the hotel was really expensive, but luckily there is a 7/11 just down the road, and heaps of restaurants to choose from.
There is also a revolving restaurant on the top of the grand tower and a round bar just underneath it. The view from the bar is spectacular.
I would certainly reccomend this hotel to anyone who wants that little bit more out of there hotel.
Unique Quality: The view from the bar was a wonderful quality of the hotel, as was the shower-spa.
Overall, the hotel is one of the best I have ever stayed in.

Tourist Friendly hotel On Orchard Road
We stayed at the South Tower so the rooms were clean but decor and layout rather old-fashioned. Wall and furnishings were in gray and cream.
The bathrooms were newly refurbished, and had two basins, his and hers!
There is a Main Wing which is grander and more luxurious.
Unique Quality: The location cannot be beat. It is at the centre of Orchard Road and within walking distance to Ngee Ann City (Takashimaya), Borders Book Shop, Scotts Food Court, Wisma Atria and Centrepoint. Also very close to two MRT stations.
The Asian Buffet Breakfast served at the Pine Court Chinese Restaurant on Level 36 was lovely. The ambiance of the restaurant was extremely pleasant and I was instantly transported to Beijing! The view from the restaurant was very good.
The Chicken Rice at the Chatterbox Coffee House on street level is among the most famous in Singapore.
This was a very popular hotel for Asian tourists. Malaysians, Singaporeans and Brunei residents enjoy special rates, which includes breakfast.
Tips for SuperMums: There is a hotel pool on the 5th Level of the Main Tower. It is child-friendly and has a splash pool for kids. However, the Spa and Fitness Centre is located on the 37th Level of the South Tower, which is somewhat far away from the pool.

the room is big n spacious. Found it a little run down for a 5-star. The security is wonderful , u can not access your room flr unless u have ur room key card.
The chicken rice @ Chatter box - not bad..... unless it's bundled together with ur room. if not it's too ex .
Pleasant staff. very centralised for shopping. It's located in Orchard so all the shopping malls r within walking distance.
Not bad stay. can consider.

Meritus Mandarin Hotel
After reading the various replies of the Le Meridien Hotel, I'm thinking of rebooking to the Meritus Manadrin Hotel. A little bit more dollars, but what I've read, it's much better then the LM. Any further comments? Thanks in advance.

Meritus Mandarin has a very good location within the main shopping belt. Service and facilities wise, the hotel is definitely a few notches above Le Meridien. It used to feel quite old, but ever since the massive renovation it went through back in 2003, it now boast some of the smartest rooms around. It is definite far better than Le Meridien.
The only issue will be that the hotel's own inhouse restaurants and cafes are quite a bit more expensive than those in Le Meridien. But it is not a problem as you have many other options at the shopping malls surrounding it. If you are keen, the chicken rice served in The Chatterbox is the chicken rice most recommended by most travel magazines (and some tourist guides). While I do like it and find its preparation especially fresh tasting, I still think it is overhyped.
Just my 2 cents.... :-)

I currently work in the retail industry, but local tourism is a sector that has fascinated me a great deal for a long while.
Due to work commitments, I have been unable to take any long trips overseas these few years and so I make it a habit to stay at the various hotels (mainly 4 stars and up) in Singapore to pamper myself during long weekends whenever possible. Perhaps because of this, I may know more about hotels than most locals since most people travel to other countries instead. ;-)

Le Meridien Hotel is very run down. Although on Orchard Road, it is located on the wrong part of Orchard Road. The Mandarin Orchard is a better bet.

Is the chatterbox chickenrice really that good?
Frankly when you are in singapore eating in the hotel is not needed at all.There are so many choices. Certainly with the japanese mall so nearby with it's food court.

Chatterbox chicken rice is not the best, but its good quality is consistent and the ingredients (especially the chilli sauce) do taste very fresh as compared to the hawker centre or foodcourt varieties which often suffer from taste inconsistencies on different days. Thus, it is more of a "reliability" issue.
That being said, I still think that the chicken rice there is kind of overpriced due to the hype around it. Most people will probably enjoy a better meal at the chicken rice shops such as Five Star, Hainanese 2nd Street, etc...
