HI! I have not stayed here personally but it is in a quiet part of buzzing Orchard Road - the shopping artery. You get plenty of shophouses selling a bevy of local dishes - you must try Kiliney Toast (the French Toast with Kaya - coconut cream, is to die for, as well as strong robust local coffee and milk tea) and there is a mediterranean restaurant just across the street. The hotel runs a good Taiwanese porridge buffet as well for about S$10. There is a large convenience store from the Fairprice Group just across the street where you can load up on stuff and Somerset MRT (and the rest of noisy Orchard Road) is just 10 minutes walk away.

I had a business associate who had stayed in this hotel once. It is an okay and rather simple hotel, functional and clean but nothing grand.... I thought the lobby (what lobby? ;-) was a little too simple though for an hotel located in Orchard.

There are a number of eateries along that stretch of road, but I think the only one worth mentioning is OA Bakery, where a complete Katsu set meal can be had for only S$5.25! There used to be a restaurant called "Streets of Penang" which food I really liked... too bad it closed and made way for another ordinary Vietnamese restaurant. There is also this eatery that sells special Chee Cheong Fun (a sort of steamed roll made from rice flour) with all sorts of strange fillings such as Durian. I find it too weird for my liking, but if you are adventurous about food, you can always try it and see how it works for you.

Back at the hotel, like what my bro (Xuessium) mentioned, the hotel's serve a rather nice (but somewhat simple) Taiwanese porridge buffet. It can make for a nice change when you are sick of all the rich food. And the fact that there is an NTUC right at level one of the hotel scores major convenience points with me. It is not along the main road of action (Orchard) but is near enough. Walking distance to Somerset MRT Station is 5 - 10 minutes depending on how fast you walk.

Just my opinions.... :-)

Hotel Accomodations with Children

by Lepore

My wife and I are planning an eight-day trip to Singapore with our three children, ages 8, 8, and 5. To our dismay, we are finding it difficult to find hotels (ie, Phoenix) that will allow us to all stay in the same room. Is there anyone with a similar experience, a solution, or suggestion? I suppose renting two rooms is one alternative, but this could end up making the trip exessively expensive.

Thanks

We are going to singapore in April 07 and are staying at the Waterloo Hostel in Waterloo street. We are a family of four (2 kids ages 16, 11) and they are charging us $115.00 per night including breakfast. My wife and I have stayed there before and its not bad value. Go for this one

sorry forgot to mention that they might fit all 5 in a double room.

Reasonble priced hotel/guesthouse

by Pheon

Hello,

Can anyone advice me about a reasonable priced hotel/guesthouse in Singapore? We need to go to Singapore end of March for 2 or 3 nights. Any suggestions for sight seeing?

Thanks!

Re: Reasonble priced hotel/guesthouse

www.Albertcourt.com At least that's where we shall be on the 2nd march for two weeks, So I hope I've made the correct choice. Many of the reports I've heard/read have been very favorable. I've read the odd negative one, but then there's always someone that's either unlucky or just ***es because that's what they do, or they expect Whiskey for beer money.

If you pump in Albert court hotel Singapore, into Google, all the info you need will be there. I hope this is helpful. Alan. ( UK)

I was asking for a reasonable priced hotel or guesthouse. We know that Singpore is more expensive than Thailand, but there must be something more reasoble ....
or not??

Try the Orchard Grand Court Hotel/Apartment, www.ogc.com.sg(central but not in the noisy traffic area) it's along killiney road, which is the parallel road to the famous shopping Orchard Rd and it's walking distance to the subway. Albert Court Hotel is near the famous electronic shopping but kind of in the world of Indians if you do not mind. enjoy your stay.

Travel Tips for Singapore

Merlion's History

by Jmill42

Riding a wave, with the head of a lion and the body of a fish, the national symbol of Singapore might not seem logical. But, when you examine the history that produced the symbol, it is a fascinating choice for a monument.

In the beginning, Singapore was mainly a fishing community and was first known as Temasek, meaning "sea".

It is legend that Prince Sang Nila Utama, in the 11th century rediscovered this island, and when he first stepped off his boat, he was greeted with the sight of a lion.

In his language, the prince called the island "Lion City". What that translates to today is Singa (lion) Pura (city).

The country's national symbol is the merlion, which has a fish tail attached to a lion’s body. It represents the fishing village beginning to the sighting of the lion upon rediscovery.

Fontain of Wealth

by yatingchen

The Fontain of Wealth is the biggest fontain in the world. It has Chinese horoscope symbols and is surrounded by 5 tall buildings which look like 5 fingers. Singaporans believe "Fong-Shui" a lot and consider the design could bring much fortune. (keep fortune in hand)

It's Ramadhan in Singapore! (Geylang)

by beetlebummer

Geylang is a must to visit if you are in Singapore during Ramadhan. The whole stretch of road will be converted into a sea of humans, lights and FOOD galore, almost throughout the whole month!!! This is where the locals, especially the Malays, go to get almost everything that they need for their Aidilfitri (Eid) preparations. You see, the custom here in Singapore for the Malays, is to have new clothes or the baju kurung, new shoes, new curtains, new carpets and new almost everything in the house, as they celebrate the end of fasting month and the arrival of Aidilfitri (Eid)!! This practice is not related to the religion (Islam) though. It is solely customary. But it is so much fun to see this place come so alive during this month. And also this is where you can indulge on the local food. Hot favourites are the ayam percik and the dendeng (even the other races will come just for these food).
