by relax47
have booked my flights 2 Singapore in November staying there from the 9th - 7 nights, have not decided on which hotel to stay at as getting mixed reviews. Have got it down to 2 hotels. the Grand Hyatt / Royal Plaza on Scotts. There is a price difference. Both are close to Orchard rd.Have been to Singapore twice over the years, but not 100% sure about the R.P on scotts. pls advise. looking forward to any reply's. Last there about 8yrs. Thanks David

Hi David,
I stayed at the Grand Hyatt just recently and it was very new renovated. The RP Scotts is just accross the street from the Grannd Hyatt. If Budget is not your issue, I definetly would take the grand Hyatt.
Both locations are perfect by the way, directly next to Orchard Road.

Hi, welcome to Singapore.
Grand Hyatt and Royal Plaza on Scotts are like opposite the road to each other. :) They are in the heart of Orchard Road. I have been to both hotels, but only stayed with the Grand Hyatt. Personally I like the Grand Hyatt, very accessible to almost everything if not all ;) Ie. shopping and more shopping.
Have a wonderful time here David.

Travel Tips for Singapore
Singapore Visitor Centre
by mke1963
The Singapore tourism authorities, through a number of Singapore Visitor Centres, provide a mass of free information and free magazines about the city. This is a very useful resource. There are obvious branches at Changi Airport but also at the mid-point of Orchard Road (and probably elsewhere).
In particular they do a great series of walking brochures which are great value for money (they are free!). Best way to see the city!
Exotic birds
by phil_uk_net
Singapore is so modern and westernised that it is sometimes easy to forget which part of the world you are in (apart from the heat and humidity that is).
While walking around I would often see an exotic looking bird - a flash of blue as a Kingfisher flew from tree to tree or another species foraging in the grass for food.
Wear Red
by trisanna
August 9th - is Singapore's Independence day or what we call National Day. This day is observed as a public holiday. Some people will wear red shirts (Singapore's flags colors are red and white)
In the evening there is a big event at the Outdoor Stadium-with a parade, fireworks and Singaporean celebrities. It's very hard to get tickets to this-but if you are in town-it's shown on the local Mediacorp owned tv networks.
Four Official Languages
by SLLiew
Singapore is unique in that there are 4 official languages.
Malay is the national language due to historical reason. Singapore was called Tumasek and part of the Johor Sultanate before the island was ceded to the English East India Company.
English is the administrative language. All Singaporeans are educated in English. Some of the older generations though do not speak English but in their mother tongue of Malay or various Chinese dialects or Indian languages.
Chinese, specifically Mandarin, is encouraged due to the importance of trade with China and as the major ethnic group in Singapore. Dialects were once discouraged. Hokkien (Fujianese) is the most common dialects though other dialects are spoken by some.
Tamil is the fourth official language. Most of the Singaporean Indians were from Madras (now Chennai) where Tamil is the lingua franca.
So most Singaporeans are fluent in three languages or more.
Camping ?
by ChuckG
In most park around the island, you can reserve a spot and camp there for the night. The parks are open 24 hours and are pretty safe. I particularly like Changi Beach and Pasir Rais Park. Always lots of people and many many restaurants and bars Bring your tent !
