  • After checking in at the Dragon Valley ski resort, we got the key to our room. My kids were the first into the room and they let out a yell that there was no bed in there!! True enough, there was no bed in there....it was just a big empty room that we walk into.... with a couple of low tables and a couple of table lamps on it. We check out the cupboard and found some mattresses stored inside. The floor was definitely warm even in winter..... I found out later that the floor was heated by a system of heated pipes under the wooden floor and it was reputed to be good for those suffering from rheumatism and back pains!
I was told my one of VT member, Ms Lee Sojeong that this unique system of heating the floor during winter is call 'On-Dol' and have been in practice for a long time in Korea.

  • Most of my time there was as a resident. But on subsequent visits, we stayed at the Westin Chosun (slightly smaller rooms). The Lotte is ok, as is the Hyatt, though the latter is away from the city center. The Shilla Hotel is a wonderful hotel, a bit away from the city center too, but excellent all around. They also have traditional Korean style rooms as well.
The Korean Won is still depressed and you may get excellent deals.

    Korea's home-stay programs
    sunnywong
  • Updated By sunnywong on November 22, 2002
  • Korea's home-stay programs are distinguished in many ways from those of other countries. First, most Korean hosts apply for this program to get to know foreign cultures better rather than simply for commercial purposes. Foreign visitors naturally benefit from greater amenities with hearth down-home dishes at very affordable prices.
Your host will probably be happy to guide you as a friend wherever you want to go for sightseeing, cultural events, or shopping. Those from other lands who want to experience the lifestyle and the legendary hospitality of the Korean home should not hesitate to get in touch with Korean home-stay organization, which will make perfect matches for you. You can double your enjoyment by stepping inside the genuine life of Koreans with a home-stay program.
