I'm in the military, so I don't have much choice. But if you ever go to Itaewon in Seoul, DO NOT go to the 'hotel' behind McDonald's. It's an absolute rat hole. Yuck!!!

The hotels are expensive here, but it's well worth it. You can always find deals too.

There's no place like home.

Obviously, my best friend provided me with the best accomodation. That is, his family home in Inchon City. However, I was able to gather information where to stay from the best to the least.

It is a super deluxe hotel.

You can choose from Five star hotels to Yokwan which is inn. I think that price is compatitive but avoid travelling in Peak season which is from the end of July to the end of August. Only problem is you wouldn't find good English speaker in the small towns, but you can still try your body language. =)
For Yokwan you can stay at around 20,000 per night which is less than 20US$.[PHOTO: Jesus House at Taeback in Kangwondo(province). It was during the New Year's holiday of 1995 when I visited there and luckily one night it had a heavy snow which made this house so beautiful!!!]

After checking in at the Dragon Valley ski resort, we got the key to our room. My kids were the first into the room and they let out a yell that there was no bed in there!! True enough, there was no bed in there....it was just a big empty room that we walk into.... with a couple of low tables and a couple of table lamps on it. We check out the cupboard and found some mattresses stored inside. The floor was definitely warm even in winter..... I found out later that the floor was heated by a system of heated pipes under the wooden floor and it was reputed to be good for those suffering from rheumatism and back pains!
I was told my one of VT member, Ms Lee Sojeong that this unique system of heating the floor during winter is call 'On-Dol' and have been in practice for a long time in Korea.

Most of my time there was as a resident. But on subsequent visits, we stayed at the Westin Chosun (slightly smaller rooms). The Lotte is ok, as is the Hyatt, though the latter is away from the city center. The Shilla Hotel is a wonderful hotel, a bit away from the city center too, but excellent all around. They also have traditional Korean style rooms as well.
The Korean Won is still depressed and you may get excellent deals.

Lotte or Chosun. Near the Lotte Department store and other big department stores. Not to be missed if you love to shop and don't forget the shopping arcades underground.
Picture of me already shopping!

In Seoul, I stayed at the Taewan Yogwan. It's not the Hilton but it is sufficient. They speak Korean and Japanese. In Kyongju, I stayed at Sa Rang Chae. An awesome place in an awesome location. They don't speak a lot of english (I had a Korean friend), but a very friendly Korean style hostel.
15.000 won a night for both
