When you are at Suwon's cultural village, you can try wearing the colourful ancient costumes and have your photographs taken. It cost about US$3-4 and ladies can choose from a variety of colours of the Hanbok traditional costume.
The Korean Folk Village opened in 1974. In it there are more than 260 traditional houses from different regions of the country. In winter when the river freezes over, there is a sled field, which is great fun. There are also performances of traditional Korean forms of entertainment and games, including tightrope walking and seesawing.
There is a free shuttle bus service from the tourist information office next to Suwon station. But, you must purchase your Korean Folk Village admission tickets first. The bus journey takes about 35 minutes.
There are three levels of admission ticket:
12,000 won gives you admission to the folk village and its amenities and performances.
14,000 won also gives you admission to the musems on the site.
16,000 won also gives you admission to the amusement park
Unless, you are going to spend all day there, I recommend the 12,000 won ticket, as it takes half a day just to wander around the folk village and see the performances there. I bought the 14,000 won ticket, but didn't have time to see the three museums, as I was going to spend the second half of the day walking around Hwaseong Fortress.
Opening hours: 09.00-17.00 (winter); 09.00-18.30 (summer)
Hwahongmun-gate has a unique shape with a water gate because it acts as a bridge to across a small river called Suwon River passing across Suwon Hwasung. There is a pond behind the gate. I visited here in deep winter, so the pond turned into ice on the surface. It is quite satisfactory that they say it’s one of the eight views of Suwon.
Hwaseong Fortress has ten bastions, or chi, protruding out from the wall to help defenders repel enemy troops approaching from the left and right sides, as well as for regular frontal attacks. They also served as watchtowers. They are massive structures with parapets and gun embrasures.
The one in the photo is Seosam chi, the West Third Bastion.
