how much would we need?

by oversleptgoddess

hi. i am a student from the philippines and i am planning to go to south korea on april with a friend of mine. we already have a place to stay in ansan but we are wondering about how much it will cost if we stay there for two weeks max. including food, shopping, transportation to well, mainly seoul tourist sites... you can give it in usd... we have to know roughly how much so we can save money or ask our parents so please help! hehe!

Well, food, transportation (depending what cities you intend on visiting) and tourist sites are straight forward in cost but shopping? Shopping budget can be all over the place. When we went to South Korea, food wasn't any cheaper or any more expensive than what we pay here in the US. I thought the metro wasn't too expensive and it's very convenient. I have tips and pics posted on my Seoul and Busan travel pages.

Food can range from ~3000 KRW to 13000 KRW average price depending on what it is you want and how tight your budget is. My meals probably average about 8000 KRW

Transportation from Ansan to Seoul can be done by the metro. Subway costs 1000 KRW as a base fare for each journey, then increases depending on how far out of the metro area you need (100KRW per 5km). If you buy a T-card, then you can save at least 10% or more:

Tourist sites vary, but I would budget an average cost of 3000 KRW for each.

currently about $1 USD = 1150 KRW

Travel Tips for Seoul

Traditional Korean Parade

by Blatherwick

I really thought that the "Traditional Korean Parade" at Lotte World would be completely cheesy. However, it was done really well with a number of traditional costumes, a dragon, a few drummers, etc. The dancer in the picture captured my attention through her grace and beauty.

Tipping in Seoul

by machomikemd

Tipping is not customary in Seoul but is expected in touristy areas and high end hotels. Sometimes, expensive restaurants and luxury hotels may add a service charge of 10%. Taxi drivers are usually tipped if they assist with baggage and bell boys can be tipped if they help you carry your luggage into your room.

Assorted Korean Bar Chow!

by machomikemd

well if your room has a kitchen and you plan to have a drink, these are perfect bar chow companions that you can buy at 24 hour convenience stores like in 7-11 and then cook it and save about 75% of the costs of drinking at bars and hofs and they are aslo cheap. the crab imitation stick is about 2,000 won, the korean ham is about 1,800 won and the korean chicken burger squares are about 2000 won.
