Give it a Go or No for one-day stopover in Seoul?

by Somikan

Hi Vters!

I'm Som from Thailand and am planning to visit Japan by the end of this month. On the way back to Thailand, I will have a transfer at Incheon Airport (I will fly with Korean Air). It turns out that there's no flight back to my city, Chiang Mai, on April 5 (Monday), but there's one on Apr 6, the next day. So, I think it might be good to make a stopover in Seoul for a day.

My flight from Tokyo will arrive Incheon Airport on Apr 5, 4.30pm and will take off 5.30pm of Apr 6. That means I will have a night and nearly half a day to be in Seoul. Do you think it is a good idea to make a stopover with a time like this?

If so, I might visit Namdaemun on the evening of Apr5, and spend a night at one of sauna places around Namdaemun area. The next morning I will head for one palace and if time allows, I might visit Myongdong (spelling?) before going to Incheon Airport.

Thank you for reading and I'll look forward to hearing from you ^v^

Hi Som,
I just return from your beautiful city of Chiang Mai, I was there for one month. Yes, I would suggest that you stay in Seoul, it is a very interesting city, I* am sure you will enjoy it

Thank you Yvr :) It's too bad to know that you left Chiang Mai already. We could have a VT meeting when you were here. Anyways, we can save it for next time ^v^

By the way, what do you think about my plan? Is staying in a sauna is a good idea?

Re: Give it a Go or No for one-day stopover in Seoul?

HI, Fugu! Yeah, I have learned that it's cheap to stay in a sauna (JimJilBang or something like that) which is about 10,000 won or more per time. I saw that, in JimJilBang, you can have a variety of saunas, eat, sleep, karaoke, or even use a computer room. This is the place I think I might go for: http://www.silloamsauna.com/site_en/sub1/sub1_01.asp

Re: Give it a Go or No for one-day stopover in Seoul?

by Somikan

Haha, I think so! We don't have that kind of saunas in Thailnad either, but it might be good to have one :D

Since it won't cost me much to spen a day and a night there, I think I will give it a go ;) Thank you for your comments!

jimjilbangs are definitely a cheap way to do it. Once you are in, you can stay for as long as you want. They are good place to stay provided you (a) can sleep on the floor and (b) don't mind other people sharing the same room.

If you have a layover that long, I would recommend that you make a stop in Seoul. You can easily see the places you mentioned and possibly a few more. The subway is easy to use as a foreigner.

Hi DSwede! Thank you for your recommendation :) Now I feel that I can do this trip for sure, and can even do it alone.

I just saw that there's a program from KTO called Goodwill Guide. It seems to be really nice. I think I will try to send them and application and see if I could have a new Korean friend to travel with me ^v^

If I were in Seoul, I'd help guide you, but I'm a few hours south.
Hope you enjoy your trip!

Thanks for your offer, DSwede. I'm appreciate your generosity ^v^ Don't wory I think I can make it just fine. I get lost easily because I love to look around, but that's also a great adventure! Hope you have a nice time :)

PS. I wish I could spend more time in South Korea, especially Jeju Island (I saw it in many many Korean movies, LOL).

Travel Tips for Seoul

Advise for a brief budget stay

by DSwede

1) Money (listed in KRW - won) to bring if you are traveling on a budget:
accommodation could be 15000 ~ 50000 won per day depending on where you book
-food will run you about 5000~10000 won per meal (remember no need to tip)
-shopping is per your own choices and tastes:
--cheap clothing can be found 5000 won and higher
--cheap backpacks and bags can be found 25000 won and higher
--electronics vary greatly and may need to be researched because foreign markets may be cheaper
-transportation - subway tickets can be bought on multi-passes for average cost of less than 1000 won per ticket

2) Where to stay. Look at the Seoul travel guide for reasonable discount accommodation. There are lots of guesthouses, hostels and cheap hotels.
http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Asia/South_Korea/Soul_tukpyolsi/Seoul-1058426/TravelGuide-Seoul.html

3) Renting room as foreigner. There is absolutely nothing in regards to safety that you will have problem with by renting a room by yourself as a foreigner. However Korea does not commonly have short term rentals. The system in which Korea does key/deposit money and then monthly contracts does not usually make it worth while for short stays. And typically unless you find a lucky connection, most temporary apartments may not be furnished.

Happy children (1)

by MEdelmann

.... and then plenty of children came ... They collected around me and until then I was not able to take further pictures. They all greeted me saying "Hello" or "Hi" and I greeted back. They were very proud to get a greeting from me .... :-)) ... and they wanted to know where I come from and asked me some questions in poor english.

% cb The teacher had to fight to get their attention but he was not able to .... :-)) So I had to wait with taking pictures of the great architecture at Gyeongbokgung Palace, but it was a nice experience to see such happy children like on the picture on your left ....

Sitting on the floor

by JDwernychuk

You will always be sitting on the floor in korea. Just alittle warning. I thought i would be fine, that i'm young, try too sit on the floor for an hour. Just try.
If you haven't been doing it you hole life, it starts to hurt, fast.

Traveling in Korea

by Ewingjr98

Traveling here is very easy as we Americans have been here quite a while... Everywhere in the country street signs are in English and Korean (called Hangul), but small stores and restaurant signs and menus may only be in Hangul. One of the most confusing things is they recently changed the English equivalent of most Korean words -- therefore Pusan became Busan, Taegu became Daegu, and In'chon became Incheon!

Asian League Ice Hockey

by tyusen

Asia League Ice Hockey consists of 8 teams; 4 from Japan, 2 from China and 1 from Korea and Russia. Well, actually I don’t know about ice hockey very much. So I’ll show you a useful website. You can check out the schedule and the system of this league. I went to an Arena in Seoul to watch a match last year. It was my first time to watch ice hockey games in my life but it was really exciting and interesting. Seoul had a team named Winia but this team has changed its home arena from Seoul to Anyang. But you don’t worry about that. Anyang is very close to Seoul. You can get to Anyang by subway line-1. Spirits like ram, whisky etc...
