Sunny Morning relief...

by mountainpoet

If you are looking for a bit of Sunday morning Church. I can recommend the Anglican Cathedral in the center of Seoul (on the side of Toksugu Palace and Koreana Hotel- opposite City Hall). There is an English service there at 9:30 in the small cyrpt under the main church. The Minister there is a Kiwi and gives a good message. The members of the chruch are extemely welcoming and good to talk to during the coffee after the service.

Deoksugung

by bpacker

I popped into this place as it was just adjacent to the hotel which I was staying in. Yes, I looked out the window from Koreana HOtel one morning and saw a beautiful cherry tree in full bloom. I went down to take a look and was surprised to find a small palace there.
Apart from the beautiful rows of cherry trees. there was a musuem, a gigantic bell and the statue of King Sejong and some colourful royal guards. Go to this place only after you have seen the bigger Gyeongbokgung and beautiful Changdeokgung.

A short detour: old and new

by mke1963

Close to the Deoksugung palace is a little detour which is worth taking to see a bit of unseen Seoul. This is not a trip down memory lane per se, because all the buildings are modern but they provide a little exploration of some of Seoul's modern architecture with a little history thrown in as well.
Just north of Deoksugung you come to a small plaza by the Koreana Hotel. By the corner is a little plaque explaining the historical events of the locality.
A road to the left here takes you round the back of the Koreana, past the site of an earlier palace (on the left where the Anglican cathedral now stands). The cathedral itself is filry modern but is attractive, in a Florentine style. A particularly interesting building is just beyond the cathedral, opposite the British Cultural Centre. It's a very modern building belonging to a religious foundation, but most notable is that it has incorporated a Korean entranceway and lobby in an unusual manner. A lot of credit is due to the architect, whoever she or he may be!
Further round, there are a number of huge single trees striking upwards between the tall buildings all around. Notice, on the right the use of trees in a dim and unloved car parking area by the side of one building.
On the left is a memorial to a group of Korean martyrs who threw bombs at some Japanese military officers back in the 1930s.
At the end of the road...maybe just 150m....you come out by the Dongwha Department Store.
The area to the west of here, down dark alleys looks interesting but I didn't have time to explore more!

Transportation from Airport to Koreana hotel

by Bill193

After much investigation, we have decided on the Koreana hotel in downtown Seoul. What is the best way to get from the airport to the hotel? I believe the choices are subway or bus.
Thanks.
Bill

Bill,
The airport to hotel bus transport system is pretty good in Seoul. I cant quite remember how much the fare is but the most hotels are covered by several bus routes and it is the cheapest way to Seoul from Incheon. Depending on the traffic jam, it takes around 1/2 hr - 45 mins to get to the hotel. The only setback will be waiting for the arrival of the bus from its routes as it has a fixed timetable.

Hi Bill,

There is no subway stop near Incheon Airport. You can take the airport shuttle bus. I checked the route to that hotel, and it's bus number 605. It should between an hour and an hour and a half to get to the hotel (the airport is a little far from Seoul, and it depends on the traffic), and it will cost you 5500 won per person. It runs every 15 minutes or so.

When you come out at the airport, check the board just outside the doors on the arrivals level to find the number of the bus stop for your bus. The stops are numbered along the curb in ascending order from left to right. Find the old guy in a booth closest to your stop and buy your ticket from him. Tell him you are going to the Koreana Hotel and the bus driver will be notified. You can also remind the bus driver when your bus arrives to be sure he knows to tell you when you arrive at that stop. I've taken the airport shuttle bus many times, and I've always found it to be the cheapest, most convenient way to get to and from the airport.

I hope you have a safe and pleasant journey.

S.

You can also take the KAL Limousine bus. This costs 12000won. Is very fast and direct.
The Koreana is right in town, and between to of the palaces.
There are 2 subways close to the Koreana - City Hall and Gwanghwamun. But as stated already - there is no line to the airport.
Just had a big dump of snow last night in Seoul - very pretty.
Have fun.

There is likely a bus right from the airport...ask around. Otherwise, a bus to Gwanghwamoon will work as well (same area, like a block away).

There is not a subway to Incheon, but there is one to the local airport, Kimpo (Line 5).

Taxies are an alternative as well, but it'll cost 60-90,000 won (USD50-75). A bus is likely just 12-15,000 won (USD 10-12.50).
