Seoul and Gyeongju

by marxracicot

I will be visiting Seoul by myself for 5 days in March 2010. I am planning to stay in Seoul for 4 days and visit Golgulsa Temple in Gyeongju for a day. My questions are:
a) Any recommendations for a safe hostel in Seoul?
b) What are the places I should visit in Seoul?
c) I understand I can take a bullet train from Seoutl to Gyeongju. How can I get to Golgulsa Temple from Gyeongju train station?
d) Any recommendations for daily tours?

Thanks.

Gyeong-ju train station to Golgul-sa city bus No 100, 150 and 10min by walk.
Temple stay there?
good luck!

KTX speed train does not go through Gyeongju. You must transfer in Daegu and take regional train/bus from there.

From train and bus terminals in Geyongju, bus numbers 10 & 11 offer circular routes that stop at all tourist locations. One goes clockwise, the other goes counterclockwise.

Goodwill Guide For Free

by seoulgirl

YOu can get a Goodwill guide that can take you around Seoul for free. Here's the link.
http://english.tour2korea.com/01TripPlanner/TouristInfo/introduction.asp?kosm=m1_7&konum=3
You do have to pay for their admission to events and for lunch or whatever you do. They speak your language and can help you out however you wish ex. getting around, language, shopping areas, etc...

Chang dok kung(palace)

by Jun_Oh

More Famous for its Beautiful Rear Garden

At the time of establishment by King Taejong, the Changdokkung(palace) was not intended to perform as a main palace but a detached one. However, of the five main palaces, the most monarchs resided and ruled the country at this palace throughout the Choson Dynasty. The last council in the royal presence of the Taehan Empire (the name of the newly established regime of the Choson Dynasty existing from 1897 till 1910) was held here in August 29, 1910. The most absorbing attraction of the palace is its refined Rear Garden, which has been called Piwon (Secret Garden).
It contains a multitude of traditional garden architectures, including wooden pavilions, ponds, splendidly patterned walls, stone-made or wooden bridges over the clean streams and so on. All the artificial structures are designed in harmony with the natural setting, which is typical of the Korean architectural philosophy. In 1996 the UNESCO designated the palace and its rear garden as a World Heritage.

The tour of the Changdokkung(palace) is available only with special guides working for the palace office, who escort visitors at every hour from nine in the morning to four in the afternoon. A round trip around the 2.5 kilometer course takes about one and a half hours. Korean, Japanese, and English speaking guides have different time schedules.

Marlboro Super Light Cigarettes!

by machomikemd

it costs 2500 won at convenience stores and 1800 won a pack at duty free stores and has 1 mg of tar (as claimed) hence it has lower tar than marlboro Ultra Lights (but tasteless too! that I still prefer the Marlboro Reds!)

Boarding/Skiing @ High1 Resort

by schwein

High1 is the best winter resort I've seen in Korea.
A brand new resort, '08 is their first full season of winter operations.

A multitude of slopes and lifts, and their terrain actually has real snow instead of the typical man-made crap most of the other resorts here offer.
They run 5 chairlifts (4/6 person) and 3 gondolas (8 person). I think a couple beginner's T-bars as well, but I didn't see them. Runs are from 1200m to 2800m in length. Some runs get pretty narrow, which makes dodging slower people interesting. Bring your own, or rent it there.

Passes aren't cheap:

46,000 1/2 day
57,000 day
72,000 day+night

But you can find deals online. We got train tickets from Seoul, two half day passes and an 8 person apartment for 65,000/ person.
