June: 9:15am Flight Out, Stay by the Airport

Hotel June is located about 8 minutes away from the Incheon Airport. Our flight leaving South Korea was at 9:15 in the morning. We would need to be at the airport 2 hours before to check in. Seoul is about 1 hour away from the airport. So, spending the night by the airport made sense. I suppose everyone had the same idea and quite a few hotels had no accomodations. We were fortunate to find a room at the Hotel June located in the Airport Town Square. The town is not too appealing. We checked in, went down to the corner to have some dinner. Luckily, we found a wine/liquor store and bought a bottle of wine to have in our room. The store even provided a corkscrew but we had one already.

The room was more pleasant than we expected. You were expected to remove your shoes prior to entering the room. Wood floors and tiled bathroom. A jaccuzi style tub and a regular westernized shower.

The electrical outlets were only 220 volt whereas the Westin and Hilton had both outlets for 220 and 110. A hair dryer is provided but didn't work real well.

The room also had a PC! That surprised me.

Local call to the hotel would be 746.4417, Overseas call to the hotel would be +82.32.746.4417

HANOK STAY

There are many different types of accommodations in Korea from super deluxe hotels and traditional Korean hanok houses to homestays and camping grounds. Tourists can choose the type of accommodations based on their respective plans and budget. Korea offers accommodations with both western-style rooms and traditional Korean-style ondol rooms (with heated floors and futons). Generally, hotels offer western-style rooms, however some offer traditional Korean-style ondol rooms. However, certain motels and yeogwans may only offer ondol rooms, so it is a good idea to check beforehand.

It could be a good chance for overseas visitors to experience the old Korean life style. All furniture, windows and other items are reproductions of a traditional Korean house. Traditional sleeping pads and quilts are provided. Samcheonggak in Seoul and Jirye Artists Colony and Suaedang in Andong boast beautiful natural surroundings. Rakgojae, Seoul Guest House in Seoul, and Saehwagwan and Yangsajae in Jeonju are each located inside a hanok village, where visitors can feel the flavor of old Korean life.

Sky Hotel Incheon: Good value place to stay out near Incheon Airport

I was particularly tired and it was pouring with rain when my plane touched down at Incheon so for me the best idea was not to go into Seoul for a night visit afterall but to find somewhere nearby.

best deal i seemed to be able to get when visited first the Hotel desk at Incheon Airport was a few around 90,000 won - or £50 - with breakfast and free internet - but went along to the Tourist office desk which impressively was still open at 730pm which had better deals.

Had guest houses on their books for 35,000-38,000 won but were full or only had rooms for two for 48,000 won which is a lot cheaper still! She then said if it was the case I was happy to pay that then she had a few 2 star but good quality hotels for that price - she recommended though that the Sky Hotel being a 'tourist hotel' was better than her 'two star' hotel.
Internet was free and shuttle bus provided for pick up and bring back. No breakfast though.

This hotel was only 55,000 won or as per my bank statement only £27! A shuttle bus took me right to the undercover arrival area at the main door. Elevators for the 8 or so storey hotel and - it was lovely and clean and very good quality! Tea bags and cups were provided in the room with 24 hour boiling water available on each floor. The hot water in the shower was excellent and huge bottles of shower gel and shampoo and conditioner were provided. huge TV .
and free internet.
Asked by reception what time I wanted the shuttle bus back in the morning. And they waited for me no probs when i was a few minutes late getting down for the 7am shuttle I asked for.
There was a good looking restaurant across the road which i didnt try but at least its choice of many dishes were in pictures!

Guest House Korea: Good Choice for Budget Travel

We reserved dorm room(2 people) by email, the staff there replied very quickly.

Room is small but every dorm room includes shower room, this is convenient for us.
1st floor there is a bar, every morning they provide toast and coffee for breakfast(for free).

This guest house is in business center of Seoul. It takes about 1 min to Changdokkung 5 min to the subway station,10 min to Cheonggyecheon by walk.If u like taking a walk in Seoul,u can walk along Cheonngyecheon to Dongdaemun,it takes about 30 min,if by taxi, about 3000won.

Staff there were friendly and room is clean.Anyways it is a good place for backpackers and budget travel.

Seoul Hotel: Central and Basic

The Seoul hotel is conviently and centrally located in down town Seoul. It is with in easy walking distance of of Jonggak Subway station. It is also within walking distance or short taxi ride of many of the main attractions. The rooms were basic but more than satisfied our needs and at a good price.

Seoul Guesthouse

Basic rooms within walking distance of Insadong and stone's throw away from a food lined street, the subway and airport bus stop.

The owner Mrs Kim is helpful and speaks good English. Not so good are the 3 large dogs if you're terrified of dogs and the bedding (not the cleanest). Bring your own sheets if you're really particular or have sensitive skin prone to itching.

There's also a sweet garden patch with beautiful pink and purple morning glory.

Hostels: Inexpensive accommodation in Seoul

You can find a few places in the heart of Seoul, near Jongro 3-ga station, line 1 on the Seoul Subway, or Jongro 5-ga, line 1/3/5 hub line. A subway map can be found on the following link: http://english.tour2korea.com/index.asp). Click on "trip planner", then "transportation", then "subway".
For tourist information, click on "trip planner", then "tourist information".

Otherwise, this tip is not for a specific lodging per se, although a photo of backpackers hostel is shown here. It is a tip for those who might expect to find the Holiday Inn type of place here, and those are tough to find. I'm talking about 60-80 USD stuff. Don't worry, you won't need to stay in one of those little capsule-type beds that you may have read about, in Tokyo, as the rooms I'm suggesting are bigger than that by a long shot.
Provided is a link that gives you info on a few places between around 17-38 USD, with everything you'd need to bunk down for the night. Low-end for a dorm-type, high-end for a double or equivalent.
If you are in a taxi, and need to ask, say: "yaw gwahn kajoosayoh", (take me to a yawgwahn, please. A yawgwahn isn't exactly a hostel, but i don't think they know the word for hostel, and i don't either...it might not yield much, but in a pinch, you never know). The taxis also have a sticker prominently displayed offering free translation. Just point to it. The driver will know what to do. Or, you can find a tourist information booth, and ask about cheap rentals.
Check the links provided with this tip.
The price of the subway will be about 1 USD. Best bargain in town. Taxis are also cheap, starting at around 2 USD on the metre, and after about 15 minutes riding you will still be well under 10 USD.
Alternatively, for a bit more money, around 40-50 USD are the love motels, identifiable by the "privacy" curtain, more akin to car wash strips, hanging down from the entrance to the car park, which are everywhere. (On the weekend, they can be more expensive, as every young couple is looking for a place to cuddle).

Simple, clean, basic accommodation.
A place to sleep, shower, and pee, and not necessarily in that order.

too many places to stay!

There is sooo much accomodation to had in Seoul. There are thousands of Yeogwan and motels cluttered around major train stations. These yeogwan and motels though often associated as "love hotels" are almost always very clean and comfortable. The bed is usually really comfortable and the bathroom is very clean. These days it's pretty common to find a large plasma screen tv with dvd player with surround sound. As well as a computer and fridge. At times they can be too comfortable and you may never want to leave. bad bad bad

Back when I was a visitor I would stay at sinchon station on the green line. Behind the McDonalds there are tonnes of nice motels. There are also some decent motels to be had around Jongno Samga area, very close to Insa Dong.

if you have any questions about Yeogwan and Motels I'll be pleaseed to help you out!
