Jungle Hotel

by outers about Kandalama Hotel

Hotel in a great location, looks like its built into a cliff face and completely surrounded by jungle, with views over the tank (lake) towards Sigiriya. As long as you don’t mind the jungle insects that throw themselves at your window as soon as the light comes on its a relaxing place to stay before attempting the climb up Sigiriya the next day Great views even from the shower (pic), 2 pools one built into the rock face and one infinity pool.
Watch out for the "friendly" monkies than run all over the hotel, they will steal anything that's not bolted down.

Hotel with a private lake

by wimjan about Culture Club Kandalama

Small bungalows in a big garden. The bungalows are split into two units, so you are almost sure you are not disturbed by your neighbours are other typical hotel noises. Not suitable for wheelchair users as the room is divided into a lower siiting area and a higher (four stairs) bedroom and bathroom area. The bathroom is quite large but do not try to fill the inviting bath tub to the maximum or our partner will finish with a cold shower (unless you both go together for the same bath...). Outstanding restaurant with buffet style dishes. The bumpy dirt road to access the hotel is slow but assures you of a quite stay Nice pool, nice bungalows in a big garden and (if still alive hopefully) with sunset an old men playing some eary music form his tower next to the swimming pool

A Jungle Haven

by RAINBOWWINGS about Kandalama Hotel

This is an amazing eco hotel built right slap bang in the middle of the jungle and unless you are on its doorstep you cant see it!! A 4 storey building like 2 outstretched arms has been constructed of timber and steel and covered in growing vines and trees to blend in with the lush tropical countryside. Set 170kms from Colombo in virgin jungle where there are over 145 species of wild birds, monkies, elephants, water buffalo and much more stunning wild life, it sits beside a vast lake where the animals come at dawn and dusk to drink. Award winners for gastronomy as well as its eco management, it holds many first prizes for Southern asia. Theres a virtual swimming pool full of fresh water overlooking the lake. Just to walk thru the open air passage ways to the dining room or reception is as if you are walking thru the jungle with giant fruit bats flying from one side to the other....dont worry they know where you are! This is a jungle trek without the trek! Live the jungle life in absolute luxury and comfort. Our room overlooked the lake so we could watch the animals in the morning and the windows had stickers on to remind us to keep them shut lest the monkies got in! The food was to die for, buffet style with so many selections. At breakfast I need four hands to carry my choices!!

Reading the many reviews from this website I decided to stay at the Kandalama hotel and was not disappointed. I've stayed at many five star hotels worldwide and must say that the Kandalama was truly special. The building itself is a work of art. The cuisine is really good and fresh. The location is ideal for excursions to Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya. Loved it!

Kandalama hotel

by Grubbit

My boyfriend and I are hoping to get married in Sri Lanka next year (either August or October) and I was wondering if the Kandalama would be a good venue?
Can anyone give me their opinion on the hotel and an idea of the prices for basic items (meals, beer, water etc)?

Re: Kandalama hotel

by bianchis

Kaldalama is absolutely out of this world in the middle of the jungle with elephants and wild animals roaming around. It overlooks a man made lake where you can watch the elephants bathe in the evening. . From the terrace you can watch the sun go down behind the lake and hills. You have to keep your balcony doors closed otherwise you might have some uninvited guests like the monkeys who swing from tree to tree outside your window.
The only thing missing is the beach because you are not on the coast.
Food in Sri Lanka is generally affordable for a meal you pay between 700 to 1000 Rupees. I cant really remember what drinks cost all I know is that anything imported is very expensive.
Well have a wonderful honeymoon.

The Kandalama htoels is one of the best in Sri Lanka but may not be ideally suited for a wedding. You might want to consider some hotels on the souther coast for some better options.

Prices at Kandalama are quite expensive by Sri Lankan standards. Water would cost yuo about US$3, a beer about US$4 and food about US$10-15.

Let me know if you need any more help. I do have some experience orgnazing wedding packages so may it would help.

Hi Nilanka,
Thanks for this - we are now thinking that we would be better staying on the coast near Colombo (or at least closer than Kandalama) becase we will only be in Sri Lanka for a week before heading over to the Maldives.
Do you know anything about the Royal Palms Resort and whether it would make a good wedding venue?

Re: Re: Kandalama hotel

by Nilanka

The royal park is also a nice notel and has good facilities. It is a 5 star hotel. How are you organizing the package? Are you doing it on your own? I could inquire from a couple of good hotels and see which one has the best deal if you like. Why dont you e-mail me on nilankap@sltnet.lk with details.
