High Life in the Hills

This is a top-rated hotel about 2 km from the center of town and perched on a hilltop (surprise). The top rating is well-deserved: the rooms are comfortable, clean, and colorful, and the service, services, and facilities are great. I only ate breakfast there, but the buffet was excellent. The view from the restaurant is lovely (although if you look straight down you see the railroad tracks), and my room overlooked the garden, pool area, and the hills over the roof of the restaurant.

On-site services include arrangements for personalized tours to cultural areas, an ayurvedic center, and conference facilities, in addition to the usual.

Standard Kandy Hotel

This is isn't a bad hotel, but not a great one. Quite average. If you are on a budget, but don't want to stay in guesthouses-this may be a good choice for you. The hotel is probably around 25+years. Quite dated. The hotel is one large block-about two stories. Each room has balcony with a view of city. The pool is right below. Next to that is the restaurant/bar, which is not air conditioned. The only problem i had with this hotel is that the bar and restaurant are open aired. At night the bar is quite loud and the hotel fills with loud music and bass thumping. You can feel the vibrations everywhere. If you like to dance and chill this is fun, but if you are quite tired from touring, hiking and cycling around the heritage sites, this can be quite disruptive. They turn off the music around 11.30pm Even though you are on a hill, you will hear the occasional train horns as they come into the station not far below.

Otherwise, it was an okay stay. The rooms are quite average. The bathrooms are quite standard. The beds were quite comfortable. the hotel does need sometype of renovation (mostly in common areas). They have a gift shop and jewerly shop on premises. Even though the restaurant isn't airconditioned-they have a very impressive buffet. Also the best views. There is a huge selection of yummy sri lankan food-plus some western food.

You can walk to the city in about 10-15 minutes, but it's a steep walk up. May want to get a tuk tuk for this.
