Quiet Side of the Lake

I have stayed here several times over the years, but not real recently, because if I am not staying with friends who live up the hill from the Suisse, I have been at the other smaller lodging, other side of town, which is my other tip.

Colonial Era hotel with 100 air-conditioned, large rooms, excellent service; nice bar and restaurant settings, as well as outside lawn seating. They have a very nice swimming pool and some shops. Pleasant seating in the lobby when waiting for friends or transport, and helpful staff.

Unique Quality: Full service, quiet at reasonable prices. See their website.

Colonial charm

The hotel Suisse is situated in a good location opposite the central lake in kandy and around a 5-10 minute drive from the centre. The hotel is clean and retains a certain old world, colonial charm, especially in the bar and dining room areas. The rooms are clean and slightly dated, but very comfortable and quiet. There is a nice pool area, small travel agency where you can book tours and a bar/lounge area as mentioned before.
Staff are friendly and breakfast was included on our tour, which had quite a large selection of items to eat.

Unique Quality: Nice pool, good location and old world charm.

Colonial charm

Suisse Hotel is comfortable, nice hotel about ten minutes walk from the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. It used to be a British governor’s house before it was turned into a hotel and it has managed to keep the charming atmosphere of the old times. Although the rooms can be improved, they are clean and spacious, equipped with satellite TV, a/c and minibar. I particularly enjoyed sitting outside my room on the verandah overlooking the gardens and watching the soft rain coming down. On the plus side are also: the good food (served at a huge, former ballroom), the excellent service, the pool and the peaceful nights.

the quest for a king-size bed

At first we had not intended to stay at this hotel - but the one we had chosen simply did not have "matrimonial" room, or if you prefer a room with one king-size bed. Only two little beds - they said - ignoring the fact that we were not really prepared to sleep on separate beds during our honeymoon. At the end we tried the Hotel Suisse.

Unique Quality: The hotel Suisse is an old colonial hotel overlooking kandy Lake. The room was nice, with a little table and two armchairs, too. What we liked best, however, was the dining-room, located in what would have once been a ballroom. Spectacular!!!

Colonial splendour

The hotel Suisse was once the British governor's residence, and the architecture bears all the hallmarks. It is spacious, well appointed, has a bar and an excellent dining area.

Unique Quality: Close to the lake and in a nice out of the way spot on the hillside near a lot of other hotels. Has a real air of class.

More about Hotel Suisse

Great Location - shame about the bed-bites!

by charleygirl76 about Hotel Suisse - Kandy

Staff friendly enough, Service was mediocre, rooms were small and clean, but the bedding was a bit dubious, and proved to be full of bugs that bit you in the night. We put the blanket over our feet and shins in the night, and these are the only areas that were bitten by bugs/mozzies!!
Food was ok. Nothing special, but we were only here a night, and had just been spoiled rotten at The Beach Hotel in Negombo.
Overall Location is great for lake and temple of the tooth. near the lake.
pool, nice views,
old style colonial stuffiness!
