the bad and the ugly

Kandy is supposed to be a city of charm and a city of culture. I had high expectations. It's
situated beside a lake in the hills, roughly about 2 hours from Colombo. Ands it's famous... for its Temple of the Tooth, and for its dances. Kandy is a dump: it's really deprived of any charm... the place looks as if it's crumbling down, falling apart, disintegrating... maybe i wish it did. Reconstruction can only do some good to it. The temple, in all fairness is ok, the dances a real big-scale tourist trap-
In the jungle
by Charlie_UK
The Asgiriya stadium, Kandy: A beautiful ground cut out of the hillside, bordered by lush jungle all around, overlooked by a gaint plaster of paris (?) Buddha statue and distant mountains. If you can bear the toilets, it's a fabulous location.
The match itself wasn't so good, but what a setting! Sunhat, sun block and shades, unless under cover.
Perahera in Kandy
by myriam_c
If you go to Sri Lanka and you don't fear the heat & the humidity, try to be there during August's full moon. Sri Lankan buddhists celebrate the yearly Esala Perahera. Especially the city of Kandy is then jammed with ten thousands of celebrating people and the festival lasts for 5 nights. People and elephants are dressed up in gold & silver and colourful outfits to join the parades of dancers, musicians, fire-spitters, etc. Not only in Kandy, but also in the rest of the country they celebrate Perahera. In fact smaller Perahera are celebrated each month on Poya nights, i.e. full moon.
Kandyan Dancers
by wwroam
Traditional kandyan & Low Country Dances are performed at several venues in Kandy.
I had `the pleasure of seeing the performance at The Kandyan Arts Association Hall. This performance permits attendance at the Temple of the Tooth on the same night.

The Temple of the Tooth also know as the Sri Dalada Maligawa was constucted by Kandyan Kings during the 17th Century. It houses the Lord Buddhas tooth and hence its name. It is situated in the centre of Kandy bordering the Kandy Lake.
The Temple also has a museam which has many items from the era of the Kandyan Kings and is on the first floor of the temple complex.
