River of Kandy
by daryll
During your journey onwards or inwards of Kandy, you definitely pass one of the most important river which regularly used by the locals to do their laundry. We stop over and took some pictures and at least feeling the fresh cool water flowing from the Kandy hills. The shy ladies were quite fascinated to see us and greeted us meanwhile they continue singing while washing their clothes. I felt like doing a documentary film on them.

Sigiriya the Bible Mountain
by daryll
The rock fortress Sigiriya, rises some 600 feet above the scrub jungle plain in the north central part of Sri Lanka. It is this very feature that drove young prince Kasyapa, after killing his father King Dhatusena, by entombing him alive, to this lonely rock in the jungle to hide from his older brother who was gathering an army to retake the throne. Kasyapa while in self imposed exile made his new kingdom as liveable and pleasant as possible by surrounding himself with his loyal followers, and for his personal enjoyment, what could only be described as "pinups". These frescos are to this day preserved in a grotto in the sheer west face of the rock.
The top of the rock in itself is a marvel of agro-engineering. About 3 acres in area, every square foot was utilized. Bathing pools were cut out of living rock and every drop of (rain) water was used and re-used. Sigiriya (lion's throat) was so named because the visitors had to go through the throat of a lion to get to the top of the rock.
Kandy Esala Perahera
by Hanniexxx
This is by far the most amazing festival you will ever see. The atmosphere is amazing and worth the hustle and bustle to see. The final night is the climax of the whole celebrations when Buddahs Tooth Relic is paraded down the road on the top of the "Tusker" elephant. There are large flaming lanterns, music, dancers and everything all in one place. When I saw the final parade, My family and I got to the centre of the action as we were on the pavement with all the locals, instead of the pre-booked seats for tourists "Boring!". It makes the whole atmosphere come alive when you are squashed against people you have never seenbefore in you life although it is a good idea to watch your pockets! I would highly recommend visiting Kandy at this time although you have to book well, well in advance and the prices are often muchmore expensive, but it is worth it!
Kandy Lake
by freya_heaven
The Lake in the centre of Kandy is beautiful, It is a lovely sights to see & very unusual for such a large open area in the centre of a big town.
It was built in 1807 by Sri Wickrama Rajasinha, who was the last ruler of the Kindom of Kandy. Feelings about the lake have not always been positive by the locals, apparently people who objected when the lake was being built were put on stakes & drowned in the lake!..........Nice!
The Island in the centre was built & used as a harem buy Sri Wickrama Rajasinha, It is possible to have boat trips on the lake.
