Grand Hotel Nuwara Eliya: Grand Hotel Nuwara Eliya

The hotel itself is very large, to go to the toilet you need directions AND a map. Service is at a leasurely pace (not to say slow). Staff is friendly but unconcerned. There's an automatic piano playing in the internet lounge filled with people checking mail etc…

White House, UNAWATUNA

In the middle of the busy town of Unawatuna, in a small piece of jungle, there is a lovely little traditional house. The family of three, mother , son and daughter have turned it to a sweet little guest house with a family touch and tender hospitality.

Mr. Nilhanta Kurunayaka, the host, is an excellent person, a teacher in profession who is impossible to forget.
The whole family indeed is a piece of art. They care, they keep good company, they have a sense of humour and they are an endless source of local stories and tales.
Most tourists that have stayed in White House keep coming back, and so did I.
I kept coming and coming back and every time I felt more at home.

The unexpected environment with flora and fauna of the jungle, with the monkeys jumping from tree to tree, the peacocks demonstrating their gorgeous feathers, mongooses scurrying away into the bushes, exotic birds with long tails and beautiful colors, big lizards, and a lot of lovable cats and friendly dogs and last but not least a big cow. They all compose a unique and unexpected jungle stage in the middle of the touristic, overbuilt and busy Unawatuna.
In the White House you sleep quietly, wake up with the singing of birds and have your enormous and tasty breakfast in the shade of tall coconut trees.
Dinner is also a feast with an endless string of dishes of all tastes. You have to beg them to stop or else you can explode from overeating. Food is cooked over fire in the most traditional way and tastes like home...
Many guests of other hotels come to have a romantic dinner or a delicious barbequed fish in this fine atmosphere. On these days there is a lot of fun as people get very open and talkative.
The romantic touch of the fireflies enhance the beauty of dinner time.
Cooking lessons are offered at a decent price.
So even if you are staying in another hotel, you'd better come by .

There are two large rooms on the ground floor and two more with attached bathrooms on the upper floor, one of which is my favorite. There are mosquito nets and fans in each room.
There is also free Wi-fi, very fast, too.
The sister has some nice rooms nearby, and some more being constructed.

The beach is straight on in 50 meters. If this part of the beach is rough, you can walk to the main beach which is just 5 minutes away and is always calm and extremely beautiful.
Prices depend on the season and the duration of the stay and it comes between 1000rps and 2000rps.

Dinner was 600rps and breakfast 400rps. If you bring your own fish for them to barbeque you should make a special deal.

Ella's Edge Resort

Ella's Resort is only 500 meters from the center of Ella. You can easily reach it on foot by the main road. It has breath taking views, and even if you don't want to stay here, you can come for a drink.
The rooms are very nice, large and very clean. Prices are $55 for a double and $45 for a single.
It is near Little Adam's Peak, Ella Rock and Ravana Falls.

I found it walking for about 500 meters from Ella town, on Wellawaya Road

98 Acres Resort, ELLA

I can not forget my visit to this excellent hotel, with the most stunning views to Ella's gap and the surrounding mountain slopes.
It is a few meters away from Little Adam's Peak, amphitheatrically built on the picturesque Ella hills, among lush vegetation.
It's a unique experience. Of course for those who can afford it, it is the perfect place to enjoy a comfortable and serene stay. But still anybody can visit for a drink or a delicious dinner.
The two floor buildings are nicely built , so as not to disturb the amazing landscape.

The rooms are modern with charming en-suite bathrooms, wooden floors, elegantly designed. They have large glass doors in front for amazing views!!! They cost from $180 to $210.
There is a swimming pool, a restaurant and bar, Spa and Gym, a helipad, a well equipped movie library, assorted board games and Free WI-FI.
Sightseeing and excursions ( bird watching, trekking & hiking, visits to tea estates and factories, ancient temples, water falls etc.) can be arranged.

GRAND 39 restaurant & homestay, ELLA

A friendly family guest house, where I had one of the most enjoyable stays in Sri Lanka. The couple owning it are extremely friendly and clever enough to keep good company and give you all the right information you need. They are young and polite and they are both excellent cooks.
They give cooking lessons which make your mouth wet.... Finally you eat the food you have helped to prepare and it is delicious!!! Both the lesson and the meal you eat costs 1500rps per person.

The location is great because it's close to the upper road for the Tea plantations and Little Adam's Peak, and close to the center, but far from the noise of the town.
Peaceful and serene, and relaxingly fresh.
The internet is fast. Free Wi-Fi.

I stayed more than I had planned...
There is a double room with outside bathroom which costs 2000rps including breakfast and the spacious double with attached bathroom at 3000rps including breakfast.

I strongly recommend it.

Ali's Home-HAPUTALE

Ali met me in the train station and being very convincing he led me to his excellent guest house, with the best views. I was tired by the hard train ride and I was completely exhilarated when I saw my room with the balcony in front. I didn't do anything for the rest of the day.... Just stayed there enjoying the view, the fresh air and the tasty food served to me in the balcony.
I slept like a baby....
The rooms are spacious, the beds are comfortable and there is hot water, mosquito nets, and free Wi-Fi.
You can have Sri Lankan & western food, in the restaurant or in your room.
The prices are 2000-2500 including breakfast. I always negotiate....

Randi Guest House, MIRISSA

The rooms are really nice, brand new and clean. The large windows give a lot of light and air. They are in the garden with beautiful flowers and trees.
The food in the restaurant is good and the free Wi-fi is also convenient, although the connection is not good.
The only disadvantage for me was the location, which was far from the beach where swimming is safe. I had to walk for about half an hour to reach it. But it is close to the surfer's beach if that's what you are interested in .The air con/non air rooms are about 2000/1500rps.
Tours for whale watching, airport pick up and drop and scooter rent can be arranged.

Get off the bus at Express Hall stop, and turn right towards the sea in Sumand road. You will find it after about 100 meters..
Don't confuse it with Randiya hotel which is on the main road.

Giragala Hotel - MIRISSA

The best location in Mirissa is occupied by this hotel. Beautiful views to the main beach on the right and the small safe beach in front protected by reefs and rocks. It looks like a swimming pool and it is never rough so I usually relaxed in the hammocks of Giragala after swimming.
The huge yard of the hotel full of coconut trees and hammocks is a perfect place for relaxing all day, read a book or have a drink.
All rooms are air conditioned. Prices include breakfast and are $65 for singles, $75 for doubles and $85 for triples.
The honey moon suite is a beautiful house in a quiet corner of the garden and is nicely decorated. It costs 90$.
The restaurant serves tasty western and local food . Prices are good. Breakfast is about 500rps, light dishes at 350rps and main dishes at 800-900rps. There are king prawns and lobster priced by the weight.
The staff is very helpful and polite.

Our World, MIRISSA

This is a very small Guest House right on the main beach in Mirissa. I asked for a room there but it was full. It is suitable for backpackers who don't mind staying in a basic room but having all the beach in front of them all day. You can put your hammock on the few trees and relax there , too.
The rooms are very small, though, dark and depressing.
They serve a few simple snacks and plenty of coconut juice at 30rps
Rooms cost 1000rps. The bathroom is common.
They refused to book a room for me even if I was eager to pay for it. I suppose they keep the rule “the early bird eats the worm”...or they didn't like my face...
But anyway I didn't like the rooms either, I just liked the atmosphere and the location.

Mount Garden Guest House & Restaurant, MIRISSA

This is a very pleasant and convenient guest house, as it is close to the safe part of the beach, very near the bus stop, and just a 6minute walk from the main beach and restaurants.
The owners are very friendly, sweet and helpful.
Breakfast and other meals are served with many kinds of local or western dishes, so I had my breakfast there and when I was very tired I had dinner, too. I liked the chicken which was cooked with a fantastic sauce and served with grilled vegetables!!!
The rooms are airy and spacious and very clean.
There are a lot of trees and plants in the large yard so it is very quiet and fresh.
There are air con rooms or ones with funs. The prices are very good varying from 1000 to 2500rps which is excellent for Mirissa standards.
There is also free Wi-Fi.

You will find it if you turn left in the small path just opposite Giragala hotel, soon after the Udupila junction. Then walk about twenty meters and it is there on your right.
If you come by bus, get off at the east end of Mirissa towards Matara.

Kingfisher Guest house & Restaurant, TANGALLE

Kingfisher is a popular backpackers' place on Medaketiya Beach.
I came for 2-3 days and stayed for two weeks. I decided to stay for the New Year's celebrations and I was rewarded because the wonderful lady owner of the house made a cheerful party, with a lot of drinks and snacks on the house , so everyone was in high spirit and we danced a lot and laughed a lot until the early hours. When I went to my room for a minute, I made the mistake to lie in bed for a second...and woke up the next morning....fresh and reborn, ready to welcome the New Year!
The rooms are basic but they are clean and quite cheap for the location. The open restaurant in front, with a view to the sea is always occupied by guests and visitors. The atmosphere is always friendly and relaxed.
I felt so much at home that I helped with some painting and decoration while I was there.
The food is very satisfying and there is also very fast internet and free WI-Fi.
The only disadvantage is that the sea in front is usually quite rough. Of course if you get over the first wave then there are no more waves. But there are still strong currents and you have to be careful. On some days it is just fine, however.
You have the option to go to other beaches farther on the coast but they are all a little dangerous, unless you stay in the shallow.
Room prices depend on the season and availability and vary between 1200 and 2500.rps

Old Dutch House, GALLE

This is not to be confused with the “New Old Dutch house” . This is a small, quiet and impersonal guest house. But it is cheap, clean and friendly and good enough for 2-3 nights that is enough to walk around Galle and come to know its basic beauties.
The rooms open to a small yard with tall trees and some flowers. It is located in the heart of the old town and it is quiet and pleasant. Rooms with bathroom cost 2000 but I paid 1,500. They have mosquito nets, free Wi-Fi and comfortable beds.
Coffee and tea are served at anytime . Also some tasty dishes can be prepared for you on request.

UBR, UNAWATUNA

One of the most luxurious hotels in Unawatuna. I personally cannot afford it and I was also perfectly satisfied in my lovely White House. So I just stayed there and often came here for a drink in front of the sea wave. One of the waiters spoke Greek, which was a surprise of course, as he had been working in Greece for several years.
There are different types of rooms, single, double and triple, which you can get as bed and breakfast , half board or full board. All the rooms are airy and comfortable.
The service is perfect. In general it is worth the money you will spend.
The open restaurant in front of the sea makes it a real pleasure to have a meal.
Room prices vary between 90$ up to 200$ for the more luxurious ones, in front of the swimming pool.
They are elegantly decorated and comfortable.

All the taxi drivers know the place, don't worry.

Old Empire Hotel, KANDY

It is usually full so you should book in advance or go to another hotel and wait for a room to be free.
The good thing about it is that it is so close to the lake, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth and the town. You may have a little noise – or maybe a lot... -- but you are in the middle of everything. And it is comparatively cheap.
Rooms with bathrooms cost 2000-2500rps, and back rooms with shared bathroom are at 1500rps, but they are not so nice.
However the building has a lot of character.

Hotel Suisse, KANDY

This colonial style hotel right beside Kandy Lake, is indeed a remarkable building.
It has a long history of ownership by important people. Since the 7th century.
Many royalties and other celebrities were guests in this elegant hotel.
The rooms are very charming and nicely decorated.
They have Rooms Suites, Deluxe and Standard ones, varying in price from US$90 to $150
Te rooms are equipped with mini bars, safe lockers, satellite TV and hairdriers.
The hotel also offers laundry facilities, room service, and doctor on call.
Some times there are live bands in the evenings, and there is also a snooker table.
The swimming pool is the main attraction, if you are not too cold with Kandy's fresh climate.
Of course you can use your credit cards, exchange money and shop in the Shopping Arcade.
For traveling information there is a Travel counter,.
There is free WI-FI , and of course there is a Bar and Restaurant.
There is also a massage shop attached offering head massage for 1200rps and full massage with steam bath for 4000/5000rps

You can use the swimming pool for 1200rps that comes along with a lunch pack and a snack pack.
And of course that's what I did as I could not afford the room prices.....
