Club Hotel Dolphin: Club Hotel Dolphin (Making the Beds for a Tip)

The title for this tip sounded bad didnt it, but it isnt bad at all. Sure all room staff really love a nice tip, and I dont just mean which horse to back. But these guys actually love making the beds with little patterns out of the towels and flowers, and the results are amazing sometimes.

I know it sounds silly, but we loved going back to our room after being out all day, and finding our room nice and fresh, and the real treat was finding out what pattern had been created on our beds. One day there wasnt any pattern, and our faces dropped :)

Club Hotel Dolphin: Nice hotel, miles of beaches.

A really nice All Inclusive hotel right on the beach. The food was great, although I really hate it when people pick food up with their hands and not use the tools provided, and there was too much of that going on for me.

There are some really nice pools to relax in, and plenty of space to take little walks. The mozzies at night were plenty, as there was a river at one side of the hotel where they must have been coming from.

All in all though, a nice hotel and a nice stay.

Glendower Hotel: Nuwara Eliya hotel

The service was pretty good, it was a nice change from the other hotels we stayed in. For a average price it was clean, the rooms were larger than average. It didnt feel like you had to check out the bed for weird creatures. It was refreshing. They have a small pub which we liked to hang out at. The food was alright. The front desk arranged lots of activities if you were interested. We took a horseback ride the next day.

The tea they served was amazing! Each room had such character. From what I can remember it was very decent priced for the quality for I found a lot of hotel in Sri Lanka to be overpriced.

Heritance Ahungalla: Another beautiful one

It is a tad overpriced for the service and quality..I think a lot of hotels are overpriced in Sri Lanka maybe because there isnt a mass amount of 5 star hotels to compete with? The rooms really are not 400 dollar a night rooms so in that sense its a tad disappointing. The pools are beautiful and huge and the drinks the bartenders whip up are super yummy. The rooms are clean and still really nice.

The hotel has a really serene feel to it. Its very beautiful. The beach was quite and clean. Good service.

Mount Lavinia Hotel: Our fave hotel in Sri Lanka

This hotel is by far the nicest we stayed at in Sri Lanka. We stayed a some that maybe were more appealing on the outside but not even comparable for service or rooms.

We were greeted with fresh guava juice when we entered and taken to our beautful room. The room was spotless and the bathroom was so shiny and clean. The private beach was so relaxing for you didnt get harassed every 5 minutes by a local trying to sell you shells or pulling cobras and monkeys out of bags so you can pay to have your picture taken with them...it was nice. Also, i must add that they make the best mojitos around. Yum. We wish we would have booked with them because the price wasnt even that much more than the apartment that we were staying at, which wasnt even comparable. The service was superb and the food was even better. If your looking for a getaway from the travelling to sit back, enjoy and relax or a hotel to spend your entire trip at this is a must stay hotel. You wont be disappointed!

The private beach, the view of ocean, the service, the food and the cleanliness.

Slightly Chilled (Yellow House): Cool & Pleasant Stay

The very first day we landed in Sri Lanka we headed to Adams Peak for our stay at this hotel. Don't be worried by the looks from outside, this surely IS the best property in this part of Sri Lanka. Some of the neighboring properties looked bigegr and nicer but through our trek up the peak several tourists complained about their hotels. We on the other hand had a fantastic room, service and food in this stay.
The room is big and has fantastic views. Unlike what we are used to normally the hotels in this place actually have storeys underground- so you climb down a floor or two for your rooms. That was fun- after the Adams Peak climb it is so funny to see all of us limping and groaning as we take the stairs down ;-))

Fantastic room and views! Great management- they even have wind cheaters, torches and anything else you may need for your trek up the peak, and are very attentive and cooperative- they let us stay till late afternoon since we were so exhausted after the trek.

Grand Hotel: Colonial Charm

We stayed only one night in this charming hotel from the British Era. The architecture and decor all take you some years back in time. The staff were very attentive and helpful. They have 3 restaurants- specifically one Indian restaurant right at their entrance. Needless to say Aj & Pranava were super thrilled and we ate all 3 meals there! On the positive side to this, the indian food was really yum and very affordable- these were probably the cheapest meals we had in our entire trip! :) Be cautioned the main restaurant has a dress code for men- no shorts etc. We were there during the Christmas week, the decor was really pleasing and reminded us of ou days in the US. This place does not have a pool, however it has very good pub and a billiards room as well.

No pool, colonial ambience

Hotel Priyankara: Tissa's hidden gem

We stayed 2 nights at Priyankara, such a beautiful property this and the staff were most helpful! We were headed to Yala Wildlife Sanctuary and this hotel is about 15 kms away from the entrance. It is surrounded by many others, but surely we felt this one was the best. The food was pretty decent-their buffet spread was always adequately refilled and nice and warm. On one of the nights here after our safari (and a leopard sighting at that!) I fell sick and had to be rushed to a nearby government hospital. The next when I was discharged they had ensured we had another room to spare for us foran extended time and made way for every one of our additional requests. Very caring staff, though they did have a bit of construction and drilling happening for a short time that was thoroughly irritating. All in all nice stay and we'd definitely recommend it to others heading to Yala/Tissa

Awesome pool, good restaurant

Villa 49: A Kandian Villa

We stayed 3 nights at Kandy in this beautiful Villa on Louis Peries Mw. It is a 10 minute walk from the Kandy Lake and the Tooth Relic Temple. So the location is ideal. They have very limited service and basic breakfast options esp for vegetarians. We had a very lovely stay and the charming hostess was always helpful and amenable. Though our driver didn't report too good an experience here, he normally never complained about his food and stay otherwise.

Long Beach Resort: Pure beach awesomeness but tiring service

We stayed 3 nights at the Long Beach Resort in the beautiful pristine beach of Kogalle. The resort property and location was to die for, the views from the room simply awesome. You couldn't find a better beach or greener sea waters in all of th esouth coast. So thats the good part. The service, management and staff just kill the experience for you! It is shocking how pathetic their service is, chefs pay no heed to requests. So please nly order from the menu, they cannot make any changes to the dish no matter how you spell it out. More than half the staff is not conversant in English, and yet they will nod to everything you say only to do exactly what you requested them not to. There really is no room service at all, so the view from your balcony is rather wasted. Their restaurants unfortunately do not exploit the beach views either. The last straw was the New Years Party for which they charged us exorbitant amounts- it was a joke!

The Gateway Hotel: Close camp near Colombo Airport

Though we didn't stay here ourselves, our friends who joined us on this trip did. We did drop in to freshen up before our flight out and realized this was an amazing hotel. It belongs to the Taj Group of Hotels and while it is a lower end chain, this particular property is completely equipped with a large pool, a saloon, some shopping outlets and a restaurant with the best service in all of Sri Lanka. So for those of you who are looking for a night over closer to the airport before you head to Kandy or before you head out of Lanka, this is THE right place for your stay.

Have described it above

Blue Sapphire Hotel: A true gem in Sri Lanka

We wanted to visit Sri Lanka again but this time away from the established tourist areas that brought us far too much unwanted attention from everybody trying to sell us everything (we all need to make a living but some of these guys just crowd you from the minute you walk out of the hotel gates)
We were lucky enough to find the perfect place in the Blue Sapphire hotel near Beruwela (kalamadora, sure I have spelt that wrong but should google ok) Set in a quiet urban area this walled colonial style building stands in a beautiful manicured garden with a fantastic pool and outdoor eating area.
Our room was just great, light airy with a balcony overlooking the garden. The bed was the most comfortable I have found in any hotel and the air con fully adjustable.
The owner Mandu and his staff bend over backwards to make you feel at home but do so without crowding you.
Sri Lanka is an astonishing country, beautiful countryside, beaches and incredible wild life make it a must visit location. Stay at the Blue Sapphire and you will have found yourself the holiday of a lifetime. We will be back there for sure.

The peacefullness is outstanding here. If you are eating at the hotel order by late afternoon and the food will be brought directly from the market that evening.
The Seafood is outstanding.
I suspect the fruit juice at breakfast was still on the tree the evening before it was served. The hotel has its own mini bus that collected us from Colombo airport at no extra charge.
