Pink House, KANDY
If you are traveling at a very low budget, and you don't care about cleanliness very much, or uncomfortable beds , or the continuous noise of the family life around you, and if you mind walking uphill the steep roads of Kandy hills, then go to the Pink House. You will get to know the friendly family and enjoy a closer connection to the local people and the happy cries of children.
Personally I like to be quiet and have my privacy when I sleep, so I quickly rejected this guest house.
Also the rooms had not a great difference in price from others. One of them without bathroom was 1000rps and the rest, with or without bathroom were 1200 and 1500.
The good thing is that it is very near the lake.

Kavinro Lodge, KANDY
I stayed in this guest house although it was a little far up the south hill, but the view was very nice and it became a pleasant habit to sit on the long balcony every night before going to bed. All the guests had a lot to tell and sometimes we stayed up late in the fresh night air.
Also the rooms were comfortable, the beds had mosquito nets and good mattresses and the hot water was running.
Breakfast is served in the next door garden and includes a lot of interesting things.
The room costs 1500rps not including breakfast.
There is free Wi-fi for a good film before sleeping.....

Rasika Beach Hotel, AMBALANGODA
The perfect place for forgetting everything apart from relaxing, eating, drinking and swimming in gorgeous water. Have your peace of mind away from the hustle and bustle of Hikkadwa , perfect for a couple in love...lol
I stayed at this hotel for 4-5 days. It is very peaceful indeed. The beautiful beach just in front is a little rough but there is a small quiet beach just 20 meters on the left, in front of Ocean Beach hotel that looks like a swimming pool. There is also a wonderful beach, just 50 meters away called “Cool Beach” . This was really amazing. The perfect swimming! I usually had it to myself because there are not a lot of hotels around.
You can easily visit the town of Ambalagoda, just 2 klms away, a short bus ride. And also you can visit Hikkadwa by bus and come back to sleep here, if you think Hikkadwa is too touristic for you.
The owner's wife is an excellent cook and she can prepare anything you like. My favorite dishes were calamari with vegetables and grilled fish with salad. The price for the room was 10 dollars and for the food about 400-500 rupees for the main dishes, 200rps for a sandwich and 100rps for tea. Very good prices.
There is internet access in the owners' home.
If you come by bus and the bus driver doesn't know about it tell him it's between Ocean Beach Hotel and COOL BEACH.

Chaaya Tranz Hotel, HIKKADWA
The most impressive hotel on the beach is Chaaya Tranz. The swimming pool with fresh water among the coconut trees is a perfect place to relax during the day and..night. It's a beautiful environment with all the amenities that a luxurious hotel can offer. There is a spa on the top, a pool bar and a PADI diving Center as well as a travel counter. The service is perfect and the sunsets are very romantic here.
The beach in front is good for surfers and on the right side there is a nice shallow part of beach where swimming is safe.
Snorkeling is quite nice because of the turtles often found there.
Prices are 210$ for a single room and 200$ per person for a double room.

Villa Chalets, near Negombo: Paradise on the mountain
A wonderful place on the mountains about 50 kilometers from Negombo.
The hotel is hidden in the lush vegetation of the mountain. There are options of pleasant walks in the surrounding countryside, visits to the nearby traditional village .
There is a small pool on the premises built in the middle of the jungle, and a picturesque river nearby where you can enjoy the treatment of the doctor-fish. They nibble away all the dead skin on your body. It is tickling at first but then it becomes a real pleasure, when you get used to it and you are relaxed in the wonderful serene atmosphere of the nature. You can also have longer walks to the next peaks and visit several temples.
Food is served in the open restaurant and is perhaps the most enjoyable time of the day when everybody gathers to tell their experience and talk about happy things. Frequently the barbeque is a special care for the hungry stomachs of the guests!
The two large main rooms are very pleasant, spacious with great view. I remember relaxing in front of the huge windows for hours, enchanted by the view, the singing of the birds and the bubbling sound of a small river making its way through the tall trees..
The other rooms are simpler but still very nice with good view.
Prices vary according to season and availability. They cost from 1500 to 2500.
There is free transportation to and from Beach Villa Guest house, who manage this hotel, too.

Green Inn & Restaurant, JAFFNA
I stayed in this family guest house for 3 days, where the people were very friendly and made me feel as part of the family.
It was also very cheap and very convenient because you just stop the bus driver in front of the hotel, right at the junction of Kandy Road and Hospital Road..
The rooms were basic but I didn't care as I only paid 1000 a day.

Lievis Tourist Homestay, ANHURADAPURA
A very friendly guest house with a convenient location. The building is nothing special but the rooms have mosquito nets, clean bathrooms and all the essentials.
The owners were very friendly, the prices very logical and the food very tasty.
Room price 1500-2000 , main dishes 500, coffee, tea 100 , breakfast 600.
It is located in the New town, near the Technical College, and the Post Office and not far from the clock tower in the town center.

Beach Villa Guest House, NEGOMBO
Beach Villa became my second home in Sri Lanka. I used it as a base to visit Colombo, to get my visas, to get to and from the airport and train stations. It is located on a beautiful beach.
The best thing in Beach Villa is the friendly and relaxed atmosphere, The open restaurant in front of the hotel with a lot of armchairs and sofas is an excellent place for travelers to meet, talk and make friends. Some times there are improvised parties with singing and dancing. The owner is a great person with a calm and philosophical mind. I have the honour to consider him as my friend.
There are many kinds of rooms depending on your budget. The small rooms cost about 1000 , the double ones on the ground floor cost 1500-2000 , and the second floor has air con rooms with great view to the sea and cost 2500.
The restaurant has both local and international food at decent prices. The fish is very fresh and delicious.
You should have in mind that all bills are charged with 10% tax.
There is free Wi-Fi .
They also manage an ECO Hotel in Jungle Land, Villa Chalets.( see tip). The transportation to and from there is free.
pot of coffee 250rp ( good for two)
roasted chicken 600
grilled tuna 650
grilled snapper 850 ( excellent!)
cheese sandwich 350
curd 75 (very nice curd ! )
It's a 20 minute drive from the airport. If you get a tuk-tuk you will pay 500-700 rupees.
If you are in central Negombo, tuk-tuks cost 200-300 rps. And also there is a bus running along the seaside road, going to Kochichikade. Tell the driver where to stop. It is usually crowded and costs 20rps.

Club Hotel Dolphin: Club Hotel Dolphin (Making the Beds for a Tip)
The title for this tip sounded bad didnt it, but it isnt bad at all. Sure all room staff really love a nice tip, and I dont just mean which horse to back. But these guys actually love making the beds with little patterns out of the towels and flowers, and the results are amazing sometimes.
I know it sounds silly, but we loved going back to our room after being out all day, and finding our room nice and fresh, and the real treat was finding out what pattern had been created on our beds. One day there wasnt any pattern, and our faces dropped :)

Glendower Hotel: Nuwara Eliya hotel
The service was pretty good, it was a nice change from the other hotels we stayed in. For a average price it was clean, the rooms were larger than average. It didnt feel like you had to check out the bed for weird creatures. It was refreshing. They have a small pub which we liked to hang out at. The food was alright. The front desk arranged lots of activities if you were interested. We took a horseback ride the next day.
The tea they served was amazing! Each room had such character. From what I can remember it was very decent priced for the quality for I found a lot of hotel in Sri Lanka to be overpriced.

Slightly Chilled (Yellow House): Cool & Pleasant Stay
The very first day we landed in Sri Lanka we headed to Adams Peak for our stay at this hotel. Don't be worried by the looks from outside, this surely IS the best property in this part of Sri Lanka. Some of the neighboring properties looked bigegr and nicer but through our trek up the peak several tourists complained about their hotels. We on the other hand had a fantastic room, service and food in this stay.
The room is big and has fantastic views. Unlike what we are used to normally the hotels in this place actually have storeys underground- so you climb down a floor or two for your rooms. That was fun- after the Adams Peak climb it is so funny to see all of us limping and groaning as we take the stairs down ;-))
Fantastic room and views! Great management- they even have wind cheaters, torches and anything else you may need for your trek up the peak, and are very attentive and cooperative- they let us stay till late afternoon since we were so exhausted after the trek.

Long Beach Resort: Pure beach awesomeness but tiring service
We stayed 3 nights at the Long Beach Resort in the beautiful pristine beach of Kogalle. The resort property and location was to die for, the views from the room simply awesome. You couldn't find a better beach or greener sea waters in all of th esouth coast. So thats the good part. The service, management and staff just kill the experience for you! It is shocking how pathetic their service is, chefs pay no heed to requests. So please nly order from the menu, they cannot make any changes to the dish no matter how you spell it out. More than half the staff is not conversant in English, and yet they will nod to everything you say only to do exactly what you requested them not to. There really is no room service at all, so the view from your balcony is rather wasted. Their restaurants unfortunately do not exploit the beach views either. The last straw was the New Years Party for which they charged us exorbitant amounts- it was a joke!

The Gateway Hotel: Close camp near Colombo Airport
Though we didn't stay here ourselves, our friends who joined us on this trip did. We did drop in to freshen up before our flight out and realized this was an amazing hotel. It belongs to the Taj Group of Hotels and while it is a lower end chain, this particular property is completely equipped with a large pool, a saloon, some shopping outlets and a restaurant with the best service in all of Sri Lanka. So for those of you who are looking for a night over closer to the airport before you head to Kandy or before you head out of Lanka, this is THE right place for your stay.
Have described it above

Blue Sapphire Hotel: A true gem in Sri Lanka
We wanted to visit Sri Lanka again but this time away from the established tourist areas that brought us far too much unwanted attention from everybody trying to sell us everything (we all need to make a living but some of these guys just crowd you from the minute you walk out of the hotel gates)
We were lucky enough to find the perfect place in the Blue Sapphire hotel near Beruwela (kalamadora, sure I have spelt that wrong but should google ok) Set in a quiet urban area this walled colonial style building stands in a beautiful manicured garden with a fantastic pool and outdoor eating area.
Our room was just great, light airy with a balcony overlooking the garden. The bed was the most comfortable I have found in any hotel and the air con fully adjustable.
The owner Mandu and his staff bend over backwards to make you feel at home but do so without crowding you.
Sri Lanka is an astonishing country, beautiful countryside, beaches and incredible wild life make it a must visit location. Stay at the Blue Sapphire and you will have found yourself the holiday of a lifetime. We will be back there for sure.
The peacefullness is outstanding here. If you are eating at the hotel order by late afternoon and the food will be brought directly from the market that evening.
The Seafood is outstanding.
I suspect the fruit juice at breakfast was still on the tree the evening before it was served. The hotel has its own mini bus that collected us from Colombo airport at no extra charge.
