    This guesthouse near the Southern Group of ruins is run by a very friendly couple who will do anything they can to make sure you have a pleasant stay. A double room costs Rs 800 and has ceiling fan, mosquito net, and shower (normally cold water; we were told hot water was also possible but we didn't feel the need for it). Bike hire is Rs 200 per day. Meals are also available.

    The Giritale hotel is only 12 km from Polonnaruwa and is ideal as a base to see Polonnaruwa and the elephants of Kandulla.

    Fantastic views of Giritale Tank from a good restaurant and deck.

    We accidentally found this accommodation as it was not listed in my guidebook .
    The spartan triple with ensuite bathroom though not that spacious, it was tidy and by far better value than the one in Anuradhapura (1,000 SLR for a triple).

    • It's nice place with a big garden outside.... just one problem the restaurant is very exspensive!!!

    • Absolutely the best place to stay. The house is nice, the rooms spacious and clean, birlliant food and "my singhalese" family ! (Manel, Bandu, Shanti)
    Even if they didnŽt have rooms when I came back from Upuwelli they tried to find another place for me to stay. Hope IŽll celebrate my wedding there.

    Palm gargen guesthouse: a quiet place

    • I liked this gh very much. It's in the middle of paddy fields about 1km outside the town. If you're looking for a very quiet place to relax this is a good choice. A very nice srilankan couple run this place with four nice and clean rooms where you can feel really at home. It's cheap ( about 800rs) , food is very good, they can organize anything you want and they rent bicicles.

    • The Rest House is located right on the tank (lake) a couple of minutes from town and right next to the ruins of the ancient city. The room we had (room 3) was fantastic. It had a large terrace opening onto the lake, it was clean and modern. I believe there are rooms without a terrace which may be older so worth checking what you're getting. The staff were all really helpful and friendly and the food was good. I'd recommend staying at this hotel, though it was quite expensive.

    It was without any doubt my worst accomodation experience in Sri Lanka. Hotel was cheap, but not extremely (something like 700 rupees per night) and rooms were awfully dirty - traces of blood on bed sheets and in the bathroom... :(((( probably never cleened in last months...

    The staff was very friendly and food OK. They even invite me for few glasses of arrack in the evening... But the rooms... :(

    If there's a hotel I have loved to bits in Sri Lanka, this hotel is the one! Not only because it had a nice comfortable room, but also for its surroundings... It's set in a huge tropical garden, with plenty of colourful flowers and little paths, and it's also on the shore of a very lanrge man-made lake, the 'Parakrma Samudraya'. What else? They Ayurvedic centre... one of the best I have found.

    A lovely spacious room - with nice furniture and a very useful TV set... with english-speaking channels! Very rare. Pricewise: 60 dollars for a double, including breakfast and dinner.

    The resort is located close to all cultural and archaeological sites of Polonaruwa, Sigyria and Dhambulla by the lovely Kandalama-Lake
    Culture Club Amay Lake is an ideal place to relax ; 92 luxurious chalets are well furnished and equipped with modern facilities. Amaya Lake also offers a nice partly open air restaurant with good international and Sri lankan food. Adjecent to the lobby and restaurant is a convenient partly open-air bar, serving wide range of wines, spirits, beer and fresh fruits.The pool is very large and well situated infront of the Ayurvedic center, bar and restaurant
