Credible Wildlife Tour Operators

by shawnbrito

There are many well trained and experienced Tour Operators in Sri Lanka.. Each tour operator will have their own structure and unique methods of entertaining the customer.. The Tour generally accommodates the cost of::

1) Traveling (Which will always be several hundred Km (Since your going to the North-Central, Central, South-East, West-Central; the cost is going to be above $200/- including Safaris)
2) Accommodation (Generally $35/- P/Night without food)
3) Tour Guide ($50 P/Day) --> (He has to lodge, eat/drink as well :-)
4) Meals - Breakfast+ Lunch+ Dinner (Budget it @ $20 P/Day; Average)
5) Extra meals, snacks ($10 P/Day)

On the other hand, what if you did this alone and all by yourself? - would that be cost effective? The real answer would be, are you willing to risk not seeing many of the wild wonders that are mostly known by the local naturalist?
If you said yes, then the following budget could be applied:

1) Traveling (Which will always be several hundred Km (Since your going to the North-Central, Central, South-East, West-Central; the cost is going to be above $100/- including Safaris)
2) Accommodation (Generally $30/- P/Night without food)
3) Tour Guide (None) --> :-)
4) Meals - Breakfast+ Lunch+ Dinner (Budget it @ $12 P/Day; Average)
5) Extra meals, snacks ($3 P/Day)

This was the budget I made when I went to the South-East.. And it worked :) Mostly :-)

These are the credible Tour Operators you can check out. (Many of them accommodate the option of Wildlife exploration)

1) Walk with Jith (www.walkwithjith.com) is a rising Wildlife Tour Operator that I have come across several times in the past.
2) www.srilankaecotourism.com
3) www.adventurelanka.co.uk (Done by my friend Ruban.J.) He has a planned Wildlife Tour 14days /$1200/- only- including elephants, leopards, birds, bears etc etc).. I'm sure he can make you a personalized package for 10days (Birds only) if you like...
4) www.jetwing.com (Hotels & Tour Operator for Sri Lanka)
5) www.jetwingeco.com (Wildlife & Eco Tour Operator for JetWing Hotels)
6) www.srilankaadventures.com

Although there are many more Eco Tour Operators in Sri Lanka, the above list comprises of the top well known Eco-Tour operators!

advice re transportation

by Tigger6149

Hi my husband and I are visiting Sri Lanka for 2 weeks late Aug/early Sept we are staying Wadduwa on an full package. However, we do fancy visiting Sigiriya and surround areas of Damulla/Polonnaruwa and Kandy/Nuwara Eliya. We have done some reasearch and are considering stopping the Vil Uyana hotel in Habarana and the Tea Factory hotel near Nuwara. We are thinking about hiring a driver for three days. Can anyone give me any advice about the best way of sorting this. Do I book the hotels direct on the website and driver seperately or as a package.

been going to Lanka frequently since 1970 and have used the car/driver situ a couple times. you can do it either way, but I think (NOT positive) that it may be a little more economical to book them together, IF you are using one ofthe main tour operators, who specialize in this.

I would query a couple of them and see what they offer you. 2 excellent ones, very reputable and would do you a great tour are:

http://www.aitkenspence.com/

and

http://www.walkerstours.com/

both use specific hotels, so see what they will quote you; ALSO ask whether 3 days is sufficient, 4 may be much more preferable

IME independent guides/drivers are not able to get good rates from the very upmarket hotels like Jetwing Vil Uyana (which BTW is in Sigiriya) and Heritance Tea Factory, but they usually have a contact with a local travel agent that can get reasonable rates ('block' rates).

Don't book direct from the hotel's website as the rates quoted there are likely to be higher ('rack' rates).

Most independent guides/drivers will quote you the same price for the transport/guiding element whether you book hotels yourself or through them.

As a guideline you can check the rates at independent booking sites, e.g. www.agoda.com or www.srilanka.com

Booking through an independent guide/driver (package of separately) will likely be cheaper than booking through the major operators. 2 has already been mentioned. Let me add another well reputed company - Red Dot Tours (www.reddottours.com).
