Kitulgala Rest House: Gorgeous location

This is a large hotel set back from the main road along the river, and seems to be a place where people stay for a while. There are about 20 rooms, but the restaurant is enormous (seats about 300) – but it’s pleasant, and many of the tables have a lovely view overlooking the river. Breakfast is good, and considering how big the dining hall is, other meals must be too. There are old photos and information related to the movie Bridge on the River Kwai, which was filmed a little upstream, all over the common areas.

It’s a gorgeous location with lots of local outdoors activities, and most of the hotel services revolve around those instead of internal services. There’s room and laundry service, but the focus is definitely on arranging white water rafting/boating, jungle trekking, and bird watching hikes. There are mountain bikes and a few other vehicles available for rent.

I was in a ground floor room that opened straight to the lawn by the river, which was nice in the morning. The room was fine; everything was clean, though a little worn around the edges. When I was there (off season), the hallways in that part were being painted, and paint and tools were all over the place, including the stairs up to the lobby. I trust that isn’t the norm.
