Sunny's Guesthouse Akurala: Relaxing Romantic Retreat In Sri Lanka

I stayed there just after the tsunami. Then there were only two rooms available.
These rooms are equiped with a good working fan and ofcourse a clean musquito net. Water was sometimes not available due to the tsunami, but now it is working fine.

Food is optional. No buffet, but to order.

Shopping: Ambalangoda
Nightlife: Hikkaduwa beach area (you need to hire a threewheel "tuctuc")

Cheap travel from Colombo by train (to Ambalangoda "Matara/Galle Tain") or by A/C-bus.

Beach is great. Though the sea is near the house, consider a 10/15 minute walk to a recreational area.

Be carefull lending your diving gear (mask etc), sometimes it will be stolen from you (on busy days).

Sea Spray Terrace: Sri Lanka's nicest bathing spot

At my first trip to Sri Lanka I found this nice little guesthouse in Akurala which is one of the best places to stay in Sri Lanka. Altogether I stayed there four times and enjoyed every single minute. Akurala is based right in the middle between Ambalangoda, which is a good city for everyday-shopping and Hikkaduwa, for those who don't want to miss a party.
Right in front of the guesthouse you'll find the probably best bathing spot in Sri Lanka. Protected by a natural coral reef the first 20 metres of the ocean are like a pool with calm waters without any waves at low tide and just small waves at high tide.

There are 4 guest rooms (each for 2-3 guests) equipped with a western-style bathroom, mosquitonet and a fan. It's a very familial athmosphere and the food, prepared by the owners' mother, is a must try. You can enjoy your dinner from the open but roofed second floor of the building with a tremendous view over the coast and the ocean.
