A fantastic hotel

The Lighthouse was by some distance the best hotel I stayed at as part of a trip around Sri Lanka staying in some wonderful 5* places. I was looking forward to staying at the Kandalama (Dambula) more, but the service and attention to detail at The Lighthouse made it a hard once to leave.
An enjoyable stay

Stayed 3 nights at the Lighthouse. Our room (with balcony) was on the 3rd floor and had sea views.
The room was attractively furnished with sitting area and walk in shower. The only minor negative was that traffic noise could sometimes be heard from the road running behind the hotel.
The food was very good with the choice of 2 restaurants. The first was open 24 hours and served an excellent 5 course set dinner menu (choice of 4 mains) for 1,600 rupees. The other restaurant was for 'fine dining'and again the quality of food was of a high standard and at reasonable cost.
The only small gripe was that the cost of wine was the most expensive of any of the Sri Lankan hotels we stayed in on our trip with prices starting at around 4,000 rupees.
On the plus side the hotel did provide a complementary bottle of wine (very pleasant) and fruit basket on our arrival which was appreciated.
The hotel had 2 good sized swimming pools with plenty of sun loungers, towels etc.
The sea is pleasant to paddle in but not for swimming due to the strong currents.
One of the highlights of our stay was the emergence of newly hatched baby sea turtles on the hotels beach.
Needless to say this caused great excitement amongst the hotel guests with many releasing the turtles by hand into the sea.
Overall we much enjoyed our visit and would highly recommend the hotel.
Nice looking nothing good cooking!

We have just returned from the Lighthouse Hotel in Galle. It is a beautifully designed hotel. Their website doesn't do justice to the tastefull rooms & public areas. The terrace overlooking the sea is particularly nice place to end the day over a cocktail. However, the public beach the hotel overlooks is frequented during the day by the locals constantly trying to sell you things.
The staff are extremely nice ,even when we had to move rooms away from the noisy road that some of the rooms back onto. Sri Lankan roads are noisy affairs everywhere drivers use their horn constantly to say 'I'm overtaking you!' 'I'm behing you!' 'Hurry up!!' 'Hello!'.So ask for a room away from the road. Noisy ones in the 400s quiet either 100s or 200s.Even though the hotel was at 70% capacity it never felt busy or crowded in fact you rairly saw more than a handfull of people around at any time.
On a negative point if you are a 'foody' don't get too excited. They put very strange combinations together ie: chesse & vegetable spring rolls with wasabi dip, salmon & blackcurrant dip?? It was nicely presented but disappointing for a 'Small Luxury Hotel of the World'. Breakfast was the same too. When I asked for a soft boiled egg and the egg arrived bairly cooked!.
Overall a excellent hotel but if you feel the same as me on the food try the 'Rampart Hotel' down the road for dinner!!
Just wonderful!!!

Spending 5 days in this hotel on a business trip was delightful. We were welcomed by friendly, helpful staff and the room was so relaxing. Rooms 101 - 109 can be recommended as they are very quiet (except for the sea). The Spa experience is wonderful and the pools surrounded with plenty of loungers, fresh towels, hammocks and attentive staff. The breakfast buffet is large with fresh hot and cold choices catering for many cutural preferences. I would go back tomorrow if I could.
A lovely hotel

We stayed here for 6 nights after many long days exploring and many hours spent sitting in a car. Arriving in a car the hotel looks awful from the outside - concrete and bricks and a feeling of disappointment crept up on me as we pulled up - not what I was expecting to see from this Bawa-designed hotel. However, once out of the car and inside it was fabulous! The rooms are great - large and airy with high ceiling, wonderful bathroom area and nice big balcony. The spa is lovely - I had a wonderful facial - the surroundings are perfect for relaxation and the therapists great. The food here is good but not particularly if you want to eat Sri Lankan food unless there is a buffet - which there was only once during our stay. There is a lot of chinese and pasta options - not really what I went to Sri Lanka to eat. Vegetarian options not great but okay. The Cinnamon Room restaurant did have great food and the room itself is wonderful - when we went it was like having a personal waiter and chef as we were the only two people there! Staff generally very friendly and helpful though a couple of waiting staff and a barman were a bit 'off' - maybe they were a bit bored as there were not many people staying in the hotel? The beach and the rocky coast is beautiful - the sea is so clear. You can walk to Galle fort and the new town in approx 40 minutes from the hotel if you don't want to get a tuk-tuk or taxi - although do be careful of scams - we were 'conned' for money - though that maybe down to our stupidity and others may not be as gullible! The Lighthouse is a lovely place to spend a few days and to relax and unwind.

Best location on the South Coast
by rebeccaHay
My boyfriend and are are planning to go to Sri Lanka in August this year so that we can see the Esala Perahera in Kandy. We will therefore be arriving on the South Coast during the monsoon. Where would be the best place to stay on the south coast so that we can stay in a really good quality hotel but be able to swim safely and be somewhere that is not too overrun with tourists? Also will it be rainy most of the time that we are there or will the weather be good at times?

We just got back from Sri Lanka and stayed at the Hotel Neptune in Beruwela. I can only say it is an excellent hotel and the staff was really helpful. The buffet had a wide choice from European to the tasty Sri Lankan dishes. Just keep smiling and you will be surprised how helpful that can be in Sri Lanka

I were in SL in August last year and I had rain only once - exactly during Perahera in Kandy. Otherwise on the South Coast it was always sunny!

Hello,
You wont have to worry about the rain. Even if it does rain it would rain only for a short while and would in no way hamper your vacation.
There are alot of hotels on the south coast. What kind of budget are you looking at? Galle & Kalutara is good if you want a place with not too many tourist.
Cheers,

Hi again,
We are going to stay in Galle for a few days but we'd also like to go further East somewhere on the coast from Unawatuna to Tangalle but I'm not sure where would be safe for swimming during the monsoon. Our budget is probably no more than 10800 rupees per room a night. There seem to be many nice places to stay particularly in Unawatuna (Thambapanni looks especially lovely) but I'm not sure whether it would be very crowded on that beach. Tangalle also has some good places but I've read that the sea will be rough at that time of the year. Its difficult to know where to pick!

I were in Tangalle in August last year. And I had no problem neither with rain or sea! You can have a look on my Tangalle page.

Hello,
With the budget you have mentioned it wont be a problem finding good accommodation. Actually, it would be a lot cheaper unless ofcourse you are staying at the Lighthouse hotel, Galle. Unawatuna is very crowded and is a party place on the beach.
Unwatuna to Tangalle it still South. You might like to try out Mirissa which is a really nice place. The sea in Tangalle is not the best place to swim at that time of year.
Cheers.
