Wila Safari Hotel: Wila Safari Hotel : AWFUL
We stayed at the Wila Safari Hotel for one night and it was awful. I would not recommend anyone stay here - not even as a last resort.
The hotel is located in the middle of nowhere with absolutely no nearby facilities/places to eat/ attractions. It was a 20 minute drive to the restaurants of Tissa.
The room stank and was filthy. The sheets were dirty. I think we may have been the only people staying there as they actually turned the water OFF. We had to ask them to turn it on in order to have a shower.
They promised to organise a jeep and tour guide for us to go to Yala the next morning (this was our sole reason for visiting Tissa and staying at this hotel). The jeep arrived but the "tour guide" was simply the driver and he didn't speak any english.
They tried to charge us for more than what they had quoted us when we had booked in advance. After arguing with the manager for 20 minutes, he finally agreed to honour the rate they had quoted us - BUT - they dont have credit card facilities and when we wanted to pay in US dollars they used "their own special exchange rate". This rate was totally out of whack with the rate offered by all hotels and restaurants in the area. In the end it meant they got paid what they were trying to extort from us in the first place.
After this bitter exchange, the manager actually accused us of stealing the towels from the room. THEY HADN"T EVEN PROVIDED US WITH TOWELS. Given the state of the sheets, I probably wouldn't have used their filthy towels anyway and certainly had no interest in taking anything from that hotel with me! We had used a beach towel we were carrying with us. He then asked our driver to open the boot of the car and actually searched it for the missing towel. He was of course faced with nothing other than the wet beach towel we had used (our own property).
I have read the other review on this website and can only conclude that it was written by the owner of the hotel or his friend...there were no redeeming features of this hotel.

Wila Safari Hotel: A Quiet Place By The Lake
The Hotel is located on the Hambantota main highway adjoining the "Weerawila lake" in Hambantota. Traveling from Colombo to Hambantota took us 6hours with inbetween stops for tea, fried rice, hotdogs, nuts, milk, etc :))
Nevertheless this was a very friendly hotel that delivered what we paid for.. The rooms were quite clean & spacious with comfy beds & A/C... The Sri Lankan Tourist board has branded this as an "A" Grade hotel.. General pricing is around $30/- per room per day (2 large beds)...
The food served is generally Sri Lankan and tasted like home cooked meals.. They will however offer you what ever you like as there wasn't any specific menu to be noticed.. So lets say you fancied "Fried Rice with Chicken" + "Potato & Dahl Curry" + "Fried Fish" + "Salad"+ "Omlets" - No probs!!
Cost of the above meal for 5 people came to about $22/- which is very good.. This is however not a place to relax as Hambantota is more of a Wilderness rather than a congested city complex... There are many places to visit, therefore you would NOT want to waste your time indoors...
I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Hambantota with a budget..
I would give it a perfect 5 rating if it only had a pool :(
