Ancient Tree Guesthouse: An unknown gem behind the beach

We were so glad we found this place.
Set back a few meters from the zoo that tourist beaches can be at times, Pushpa And Lal's little 2 room guesthouse is exactly what we wanted.
We were recommended this place after the place we had booked prior was full for a night...we wish we had known of Ancient Tree!! We stayed here for 2 nights (but wished it was 3) and ate here most every meal.
Pushpa and Lal (and Rithmi their little daughter) are real, genuine people just trying to make a go of a home business. All they do is done with love, much of the food is grown on site and they are not trying to rip you off.
The feeling of the place is what attracted us, you felt welcome and at home.

Pushpa is a super cook and made some of the best rice & curry we've had anywhere.
Ever willing to accommodate whatever need you have and will ensure you are comfortable, clean and safe.

The rooms were immaculate, nicely decorated with large mosquito nets and spacious bathroom.
Meals were eaten just outside the room in a little courtyard.

Again, this family is for real, no airs about them. When you stay here, you feel good about handing over your money.

PS...it is called the Ancient Tree because of 500yr old tree that was in the front yard. But during a cyclone last year it nearly fell over on other houses so it had to be cut down.
:-(

Unique Quality: Just less than 5mins walk to the main Matara/Galle Rd and beach.
Great food, part of the family, nice environment....good feelings.

Central Beach Inn: Budget Beachfront

While we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Amarasinghe Guest House after two nights we decided to spend one night down by the beach to sample another side of Mirissa at night. We chose the Central Beach Inn based on its reasonable price, location right on the beach and its basic but comfortable room complete with balcony and ensuite bathroom.
Nothing outstanding about the guesthouse but it suited our needs perfectly. Don’t expect luxury, at these prices you won’t get it. Staff here weren’t what I would call welcoming or helpful but they weren’t rude or cold either. We didn’t eat dinner here but the breakfast wasn’t much, stodgy pancakes and cold bland string hoppers and terrible coffee made us thankful we didn’t eat here the night before. All in all a good budget option to stay a night or two in a great location on the beach...just go somewhere else along the beach for something to eat or better yet seek out Amarasinghe Guesthouse for dinner (see above tip)

Amarasinghe Guest House: Surrounded by Nature

While the beach is the main draw to Mirissa, the interior does offer a different take on Sri Lankan life with rich forest and gently flowing streams and the beauty of staying at Amarasinghe Guest House is that you can enjoy as much beachy bliss as you like during the day while enjoying the tranquillity and peace of this beautifully located guesthouse during the evening and night. Set back from the main village and beach in a small rural community, this guesthouse is well worth seeking out and even if you don’t end up staying here, make sure you come for the rice and curry dinner which is much better than what you will find at the beach. If you want dinner just make sure you order it early in the day as they prepare all food fresh and to order and will need at least 3 hours to prepare everything...this is normal for authentic Sri Lanka curries so bear this in mind wherever you are in Sri Lanka and plan ahead if you don’t want to be disappointed.
Apart from the food, the main draw to this guesthouse is obviously its relaxing location, beautiful garden and its spacious, clean and reasonably priced rooms all with private en-suite bathrooms

Ancient Tree Guesthouse: A Wonderful Guesthouse

We were meant to be travelling around Sri Lanka but after one night at this wonderful accomodation we decided to spend the entire duration of our holiday here. The room we stayed in was fantastic. It was nicely decorated and very spacious. There was also an ensuite, which was also spacious and incredibly clean. Excellent value for money! The location of the guesthouse was idylic, set back from the main road, down a lane lined with banana and papaya trees. It is only a 3 minute walk from the bus stop and a 5 minute walk from the most wonderful, sandy beach. This was our first trip to Sri Lanka, and thanks to the wonderful host family who run this guesthouse, Sri Lanka has left an ever lasting impression on us. We would definitely recommend this guesthouse to anyone.

Unique Quality: The unique quality is undoubtably the hospitality of the local family who run this place. Pushba is such a welcoming host, and the breakfasts, lemon juices and dinners she prepares for you are without a doubt some of the best you will come across, for value and taste, not only in Sri Lanka, but anywhere you might travel. Lal, the husband is one of the kindest people you will meet and he is always willing to help and make sure you have the most comfortable stay possible. He even cut down coconuts from his coconut tree for us to drink! Despite being a paying customer, you are welcomed as if you are part of the family. We were invited to see where Lal makes bricks, and also their local garden where they grow chillies, bananas, papaya and okra. A truly memorable stay!

Ancient Tree: The kindest hospitality ever

If you - like us - travel on a budget, but don't compromise on cleanliness and comfort - this could be an ideal place to stay. (It is an issue in Sri Lanka sadly) 5 minutes from the beach you will have the pleasure of looking at the monkeys, squirrels and birds playing around daytime and watch the fireflies twinking in the night in your private garden.
They have no A/C, but the silently and perfectly working ceiling fan was enough to have good night sleeps.
The family is fantastic - they will do everything possible to make your stay perfect. Their kindness and gentle attentiveness comes from the hearth. They treat you like a long seen friend or relative.
We paid 2500 rupees for a B&B (2011 February) which is a really good price for the quality of the place.

Unique Quality: Make sure you order a curry and rice dinner from them. (for half the price of the beach restaurant's)
You can see it prepared freshly for you with great explanation - so you can have a free "cooking lesson" if you choose.
Ask Lal to have a walk with you in the close by gardens and plantations. It is a really beautiful and interesting walk on tracks you could not find (or dare to go) on your own.
Also feel free to take their advice on tuk-tuks and scooter or any other service. Since they really treat you as family there will be no "tourist price".

Also important that they provide incence and coils to keep the mosquitos away - together with some citronella on your skin they are no problem.

Lal made all the bricks himself they used to build the guesthouse and partly built it himself- I found it really fantastic.

I wish that I can return to stay here again!

Mirissa Beach Inn: Great place to stay

This looked the best of the midrange places to stay in Mirissa. It's very clean, and unlike some of the other options it's concrete. It's right on the beach (amazing beach!). The food is good and the staff are lovely. I booked through Go-Lanka.com.

Mirissa beach inn: Just the basic

Located just a few meters from the beach, Mirissa Beach Inn has bungalows, simple rooms in a three-floor building and a nice garden with coconut trees. My room was on the third floor; basic, with hot water, net and fan and a nice balcony. The hotel has a staff of only one person who does everything (except of cooking), so if you need fresh towels and sheets or a simple cleaning of your room you must ask. Food is good and fresh!

Amanda’s Guesthouse: Fair value for budget travellers

For only 500 SLR per night for a single room you can’t require much comfort. Nevertheless this small guesthouse (post tsunami built) was just perfect. Medium size but tidy, clean rooms with ensuite bathrooms. Fair value for money specially if you consider that this is seaside resort village full of tourists.
