Plenty of places to stay
As well as sun and seafood, one thing Unawatuna is not short of is accomodation. There are plenty of guesthouses - some right on the beach, others a little further back. Most are cheap (3-10 dollars a night) and comfortable, if a little basic. Many offer food - international and local, English breakfasts etc - as well as tours and guides for anywhere in the country. Some have internet access. There are constantly plenty of changes to names and management so it's always risky to give recommendations. Best is to just arrive and see where most people are - ask around and get up-to-date opinions. There's not usually a need to book in advance but it doesn't hurt if you hear of a good place before you arrive. Most accomodation is cheap and cheerful and geared to foreigners, but there is a slightly more upmarket and expensive hotel if you really need it.

Cantaloupe Aqua: botique hotel needed a bit of tlc
This hotel is about 10 minutes drive from Unawatuna located in Thalpe. We did get a very good discounted rate for the hotel through friends. We stayed in 2 different rooms during our 2 nights the first was the Aqua Zen whiich had artistict lighting installation & lcd tv with surround sound system. The final night we stayed un the ultra chic room with a jacuzzi bath once we got it working it was good fun but make sure the aircon is on as its a bit warm for bathing in sri lanka.
The breakfast was not much to write home about and they have a small swimming pool. Besides the breakfast we did not sample any meals here.
In 2011 we visited in april & the place was in need of a lick of paint & a bit of tlc.

Kahuna club: An oasis of calm
Kahuna club (previously named Shangri La) was just what I needed to relax and unwind whilst in Unawatuna, my title is how I felt upon entering an oasis of calm. The garden is lush and extensive with many birds and small wildlife that delight children. The property has 6 cabanas, 2 apartments, 2 african huts and 4 single rooms as well as the main house which has 5 rooms.
Young families are especially welcome here and the rooms are large to accomodate it is a safe and exciting haven for children. The rooms have good mosquito netting and comfortable mattresses, the owner has exceptional pride in his guest house and has used quality fittings. There are many hammocks and seating areas un the garden for you to chill and while the day away.
The restuarant has an open style kitchen, there is a choice of breakfast items which I have to say are very tasty. Daily specials on the board for dinner time are not to be missed. Prices are reasonable for both rooms and food and the staff are friendly and helpful. The prices are all standard and are reflected in the website.
The beach is only a 10min stroll to neptune bay which is rather pleasent as tgere are many shops and pretty restuarants en-route. Jungle beach is also a lovely beach to visit very worth the walk or you can take a tuk tuk.
I was particularly impressed to be given 3 emergency contact numbers should I run into any problems it shows a high level of care. The south african owner Mally Johnson is an absolute gem and he just wants people to feel at home in his place he is great with kids and if you get a chance to chat with him he has travelled the world extensively a very interesting man.
Room cleaning here is done on request as not all guests like their privacy disturbed so feel free to ask Lakmali or her staff. Laundry is also offered as an additional service. The guest house trys to operate an eco friendly system so please be kind to the enviroment and turn off all lights, AC and fan before departing for the day.
there are big plans for further development and a swimming pool so what this space. There is an onsite spa with 2 ayuvedic therapists. A library with book exchange and movies is there for your enjoyment.

Wimals: Nice little bungalow
When we arrived in Unawatuna we were dropped along the main road by our tuktuk, and then walked through the village to the beach to find somewhere to stay.
Now there are plenty of places to stay in the village but I was told that these places attract the mozzies more than those on the beach.
We wandered the beach and the places there were way too expensive. Eventually we stumbled upon a restaurant called 'Wimals', they had a couple of bungalows on the road just behind the beach and we liked it so we decided to stay there.
Our bungalow was a fair size, with a fan and mozzie net, we had our own toilet, wash basin and shower, and out the front door we had a little terrace with a table and chairs where we sat playing cards for most of the days!

Silva Hotel: Good value basic room
Mosty of the room in Unawatuna are somewhat expensive, especially near the Unawatuna Beach Resort area. They charge as much as Rs2,000 for a basic room that I would pay Rs1,000 in other parts of the country.
I am happy with this basic guesthouse for Rs600 with a balcony on 2nd floor. It has a nice garden. See other pics for room view. It is located somewhere along Wella Dewala Road.

French House: French House
I landed in Unawatuna, unplanned, with no accomodation booked. On walking to various properties I found out that being the holiday season, it was either too costly or just full. Lazing on the beach and inconversation with a German couple, I was recommended French house run by a French lady.
German, french, Italian people frm all nationalities were my neighbors. I was also lucky enough to be invited for dinner by the owner of the guesthouse for a party one evening cos her daughter had come down from Paris.
It was a beautiful small room, clean sheets, with mosquito nets, fresh toilets. The premises even stacked a good amount of literature and there was an open area with music for guests.
Homely, relaxing. The lady does yoga classes in the mornings, so get enrolled if you are planning to stay for a longer period of time.

Benny's hotel beach
It's a new hotel...
Nice management, they do like your body guard too... looking your stuff on the beach during swim.
And for our safety there is the "security office" the older man in the pics who sleeps outside in the yard of Hotel to protect us from dangerous people

Midum Villa Guest House: Beach House
In the interiors of Egoda Watta, enroute Unawatuna beach, lies Midum Guest house. It has comfortable rooms with hot and cold water. It has small and medium sized rooms with spacious balconies to laze in the mornings and evenings.
It is a lil bit costly, but its worth it. It has a village and jungle feel to it, and best of all is a 5 min walk from the beach.

Hotel: Villa en Paradise
The hotel is certainly clean and quiet.
If you're worried about another tsunami you're up high on a hill.
Roger the proprietor is an amiable, helpful fellow -- but watch out for your wallet (see below)l
If everything else is booked this would be okay.
Up on a hill, across a busy road from the beach.
But you must cross a busy road to the beach.
There are over a dozens of much nicer places right on or next to the beach in all price categories -- Unawatuna Beach Resort, Norlanka, Villa Beach, etc. check out on this and other sites, or simply walk down the beach!
Beware of the Roger the proprietor's business practices:
He attempted to add $100 to our bill because the "exchange rate had changed" from the time we had paid the deposit -- after he had use of our money for over 6 months.
We rented a villa he was managing, and he invited us for breakfast. Only when paying the bill a week later I see he billed us for that breakfast -- and it was more of a snack than a breakfast. After I complained, Roger did refund the charge, but other travelers report similar experiences.
The villa we rented used to be advertised on Villa en Paradise website, but was pulled after our stay, because it was simply not ready to be rented to holidaymakers. Don't be talked into this, its really poor value.

Zimmer Rest: Home Away From Home
I stayed at Zimmer Rest for two weeks while i was in Sri lanka and i could of happily stayed there for so much longer. Its a nice little guest house, located 5 minutes from the beach. our room had 3 beds and an en-suite. after just a few days of staying at Zimmer it felt like home, all the people that work there are very friendly and are always there if you need something. the best part about staying at zimmer was the owner/guide Thilak. He is the kindest most caring person i have ever met. He will always answer whatever questions you might have, and is always happy to arrange things for you, he is always making sure everywhere u want to go is safe and for me and many of my friends it was like a dad away from home. i would definately recommend Zimmer rest to anyone going to Unawatuna. its affordable, very well keep and i have the time of my life staying there. ive only been back in England for a week but im already planing my next trip to Zimmer.
