Hi there - How far is this hotel from the airport and is it beach front?

Re: Unawatuna

by HansDK

Which hotel?

Unawatuna is about 160 km - 4-5 hours drive - from the airport.

Unuwatuna Beach Resort (if that is what you mean) is indeed beach front, actually it alone occupies about 1/3 of the U'tuna bay - a sign of how small the bay is. The beach continues eastward however (beyond the bay) and there too of reasonable quality.

All the best,

Travel Tips for Unawatuna

Internet

by alycat

Net cafes close to the beach are a bit costly, Rs. 60 per hour. There are 2 such cafes which charge the same amount.

Though it wud be Rs. 30 to 40 anywhere, its at premium here since its next to one of the best beaches in the world.

Emerald waves!

by yumiyun

Unawatuna is said to be the most beautiful beach in Sri Lanka - and it's true. For those seeking white sand beach and clear water, Unawatuna is the answer. The area is less developed compare to other beach resorts in Sri Lanka, but there are plenty of hotels and shops. The beautiful beach fringed by palm trees. White sand and broken corals on the beach.

Drinking water and hand crafts

by Sambawalk

To ensure the hygiene of drinking water, the red cross has placed this water tank along Wella Dewala Road for local people.

Hand craft shop is common and I bought a small wooden tortoise for Rs150.

Tsunami relief

by alycat

The Tsunami had taken everyone's belonging with their broken houses and furniture and left a big mess. The sea had eroded about 30 feet of the beach. The locals say the first row of illegal beach huts had been washed away. The hotels on the landside of the road were now facing the sea. Although most had been damaged, the owners probably consider it a blessing in disguise since this rare tsunami had improved their location on the bay.

Trek in Rumassala jungle

by Ravana

Eco-trekking in Rumassala jungles will take you closer to the nature, It's said that the wide and varied vegitation in this area is really a dropped piece of Himalayas that was being ferried by Hanuman vide Ramayanaya epic.
There are many foot paths and likelyhood of your getting lost is minimal.
You can also go thru Rumassala to get to the small beach on the eastern flank of the Galle harbour called Jungle Beach, here the corals are of a high biodiversity.
