A room by the sea

I stayed here on a business trip and was completely wowed by the location of the hotel. You can hear the waves crashing from your window.

I did not particularly like the room I was given, however, I am told by colleagues who stayed here that the other rooms were very pretty, with all modern amenities.

If you are staying in the governer's wing, then be ready to wait for min. 15 mins for any service as all the departments are housed in the new wing.

The hotel is ideal for a vacation, however, I would not recommend staying in the governer's wing if you are going for business because of the delayed service.

Unique Quality: The hotel has a restaurant called the governer's restaurant overlooking the sea which is an old colonial structure with similar decor. I only had breakfast there, which was not that great, but the view is spectacular.

A delight for Package Tourists

The hotel is used by several package tour operators, including Kuoni, and it is designed to cater for those clients, and it does it well. There is hardly anyone to breakfast before sun up. there are no internet connections to the rooms, but who needs internet connections on holiday? You get a real tast of colonial life in this hotel, but watch out for the exchange rates. There is one rate to convert your quoted dollar rate to rupees and another (lower) rate to convert your hard earned cash into rupees.

Unique Quality: The Sea cove restaurant was excellent. Pick you own seafood and have it cooked deliciously.

No. 1 around Colombo

A great place not very far from Colombo. It was the former residential house of the British Governor and you even see Colombos skyline and the beach.

Unique Quality: Excellent service, good food (several restaurants including one for seafood), pool, nice privat beach, nice rooms, etc.

More about Mount Lavina Hotel

Mount Lavinia Hotel in Mount...

by brdwtchr

Mount Lavinia Hotel in Mount Lavinia.
Check prices before you go. Many hotels have an off season rate during the rainy part of the year between May and October. When I was there the rate was $68 a night for two people in a double room. It offers many of the things you would find at a resort hotel while still being in Colombo. The hotel has a place to eat sea food right on the beach at night, there is herbal therapy, Little Hut night club, and elephant rides on Sundays. The hotel has a staff of drivers as well.

My husband and I went back to Mount Lavinia in October last year. We were married there in October 2004 and happened to be in the same part of the world for our anniversary.
Our wedding was perfect and the hotel staff did everything possible to make our day special, including accommodating all our guests.
We were given a suite on our return for our first wedding Anniversary, along with flowers, a bottle of wine and a cake. Even the duty manager remembered us.
There was building work going on when we returned and some of the pool area was being re-decorated, but that didn't distract from the great views and the fantastic afternoon teas.
For the price and the uniqueness of this hotel, it's fantastic.

Very nice hotel avay from busy Colombo center

by TripAdvisor Member ALiEN2108

Me and my gf stayed here for 2 night on our stopover in Colombo. Hotel is located 47km away from airport and bear in mind this can mean 2 hours drive through wild Colombo traffic! Taxi from airport to hotel is 3000 rupee's. You can take shuttle taxt directly by airport exit where rates for different destinations are written on table, so you know in front what it costs and you pay in advance, so no hassle later.

It is worth it (2 hrs drive) since staying in central Colombo means noise, traffic, polution etc....

Hotel looks very nice and has a private beach too. Ofcourse pool is also there. We were not using either things since we rather took tour around the city which you can also book in hotel. There is a nice view of Colombo and the beach from seaside rooms!

A good heritage hotel

by TripAdvisor Member R_S_T_Sivakumaran

We have just returned from a trip to Sri Lanka and stayed at Mount Lavania Hotel for 4 nights. We thorougly enjoyed our stay there. We (2 + 2) were accommodated very comfortably in a large spacious room. The breakfast was very good. But we could not understand was why hotel rooms were advertised for only maximum 3 persons whereas they can easily accommodate a family of 4 like us very easily. We were given a double bed and two single beds. if not for our booking agent we could have easily skipped this hotel thinking they will not be suitable for 4 member families. Bath room looked a bit dated but with all the mod cons. We look forward to going there again. This is our Children's favourite hotel.

You can go shopping as things are really cheap in Sri Lanka. Are you on transit?

Have an evening drink watching ther sunset at Mount Lavinia Hotel, followed by dinner at Beach Wadia. Next day, Have an egg hoper breakfast and laze around Galle Face Hotel and walk along the beach! Perhaps try some coconut arrack too! Hope my suggestions work for you!

Hi,

48 hours it isn't a lot so get yourself a good hotel and go for shopping. You can also go to Mt Lavina Hotel (which is nearby Colombo). If you're coming during the weekend, there's a ladies night at wednesday in Blue Elephant, its nice. Or you can go e.g. to Clancy, Bistro Latino or Rhytm & Blues where I'm sure you'll have good time.

Regards,
Michal
