Browns Beach Hotel is a large sprawling place in Negombo, which I occasionally use as a base (it’s just 20 minutes from the airport). A package deal to Sri Lanka often costs about the same as a flight so you can leave your heavy gear here while you pop off on your travels.
Popular with British package tourists and more well-to-do Sri Lankans at the weekend (when the nightclub opens) Browns Beach is a friendly enough place with a large pool and several bars. In the season the place gets full, in June I was one of around 20 guests, out-numbered 10 to 1 by staff.
Try to get one of the ground-floor chalet type rooms (practically on the beach) rather than the older upstairs rooms in the main building. All are AC and have a fridge. All you can eat buffets at Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner (rs900). They also had Big-Screen TV in the AC bar during the World Cup, which was handy.
Nothing special but nothing wrong with it either.
We found it hard to find good clean accommodation by the beach at say a four star standard. We stayed in two "beach Resorts" one in Negombo "Browns Beach Resort" and "Super Corals" down at Hikkaduwa. They were both close to US$70 a night per room, but yet were very basic, worn out! You seem to be paying a lot for something that needs a lot of maintenance and cleaning. Don't bother going to either is my tip. A green pool that should have been blue was Super Coral's outstandingly BAD characteristic!

Myself and a friend stayed at the Browns Beach Hotel in May of 2006. I cannot express how impressed we were with the warmth and friendliness of the people we met whilst in Sri Lanka especially the staff at this modest but superb hotel. I cannot think of one thing that was a problem or complaint for us and thoroughly enjoyed our stay more than we had imagined.
The staff are extremely helpful and attentive and the food and surroundings the best I have experienced.
We were fortunate to have discovered information on tours to take before we arrived and the recommendation to seek out Roy on the beach in front of the hotel turned out to be a gem of a find. What a thoroughly nice, genuine warm and honest man who was informative and enjoyed the trip with us too!
I highly recommend Sri lanka and all it has to offer. I cannot wait to go back!

Stayed at the Browns Beach Sept/Oct 2006 for 2 weeks on all inclusive and we loved every minute of it........It was a lovely quiet restfull time. The people of Sri Lanka are so friendly and nice no matter where you go, they go out of their way to chat to you , infact when we went to see the Buddas at Dunwalla we were inundated with school children asking us questions like "where did we come from "" Was it OK to test their english with us, our age, how many children we had"
and numerous more as well as having loads of pictures taken of us.....we felt like celebs..................the only downside was the sea at that time was rough......the red flag was flying all of the time( seemingly february is the best time to go).........that did not mar our stay and the pool was great and never overcrowded even at the weekend when the locals were allowed to use it. Next time though I think we will go on B & B as the eating out was exceptional and so cheap, a 3 course meal and drinks approx £10 for the 2 of us...........magic. The rooms are basic, although you can upgrade to a beach villa with its own plasma tv and marble bathroom.......not much entertainment in the evening and not much for the young children.......but still a lovely relaxing holiday...thank you Browns Beach.
Well, where to start. My wife and i celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary on 1st August this year. This was to be our first holiday without any children, so where do we go. My wife works with people whose parents have visited Sri Lanka, so we thought we would give it a try. We read the reviews on Trip Adviser, and left with an open mind. We chose Browns Beach because it was the shortest transfer time from the airport and no other reason. Yes, the reviews were right in the fact that the hotel could do with a lick of paint here and there, but again as the reviews suggest, the staff make up for this. They were so friendly and pleased to see people returning to their paradise island after the tsunami. We had a two day trip away from the hotel, and visited the elephant orphanage, Sigiriya and Kandy to name some of the destinations. There was myself, wife, driver and guide Lincoln on this tour and it was brilliant. We saw a very different side to life on this island......people living in sheds on the beach next to luxury hotels, to a 73 years old man clearing a large weed ridden area to make an allotment in order to grow something to eat. This really is an island of contrasts, steeped in history. As for Browns Beach itself, we cannot fault it. We became friendly with many of the staff during our two weeks stay......Stefan, Dinesh, Walter, Sena, and Pyrisantha.....they always had a smile and time to speak. If you are looking for a relaxing holiday, on a beautiful island, with people who are smiling and happy to assist you, then this a place to visit. We will be returning to Browns Beach next year.

is it possible to get a taxi from outside the airport to my hotel at negombo. if so what are the rates?
There is Taxi booking counter after you come out the arrival hall and turn left (next to the post office) I am not sure about the Taxi Cost but I think it will be around 2000 to 2500 SL Rupiyah.
You can take the Free Shuttle Bus to the Katunayake Bus Stop and then Take 3 wheeler Rickshaw (Tuk Tuk) I paid 500 SLR at mid night on my last visit to Star Beach Hotel at Lewis Place which is not far from Browns Beach Hotel.
If you ask the Browns Beach Hotel they can also arrange pick up for 2500 or so.
The airport taxi counter is now for locals only.
There are 2-3 new counters for tourists at tourist prices.
Browns Beach is about 10-12 km from the airport, so a taxi should cost around LKR 800-900 - but they are always overcharging for going the short trip to Negombo, so count on minimum LKR 1,400-1,500.
thank you so much for youre prompt reply, which has been most helpfull
