Working around Negombo

by insane28

Hi, I'm going to be working in Adiambalama. Wanted to know how far it is from Negombo and how far it is from Colombo by car. I will be given a car by my work, and sometimes I should have a driver. How bad is the traffic if I am going from Adiambalama to Negombo or to Colombo. I will usually leave Adiambalama during the weekend, so friday evening.

What is there to do around there and are there any other interesting places closeby?

Any places you recommend where I can meet people and make some friends to hang out with.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

It's less than 2 km from the airport, southeast of it (so east of Katunayake bus stand). That translates to:
* 20 mins to Negombo
* 60 to 90 mins to Colombo Fort depending on traffic
Hangout places will be Negombo (mostly tourists and expats, like yourself from the FTZ companies) and Colombo (mix of locals and tourists and expats). Nice sights around Negombo are the marshy nature reserves and the 'Dutch canal' boat trips through it. But you're also only a few hours from tourist and cultural sights like Kandy and Pinawela, worth doing those at least in one weekend with an overnight stay.

All the best,

Is Colombo Fort in Central Colombo? What are the good places to hang out in Colombo where I can meet people?

Will the traffic be going into Colombo from Adiambalama on Friday evenings? And how much time will it take on Friday evenings specifically, since you say 60-90 mins depending on traffic.

Also would Sunday evening be a good time to go back to Adiambalama or Monday morning, trafficwise.

Thanks.

Also are there motorcycle taxis, which would make the journey faster than cars, during traffic hours.

Hi again,

1] Fri. evening it will come from Colombo. But that hardly helps; it's mostly a 4-lane 'highway' but with level crossings, and that means the traffic towards Colombo also gets into heavy traffic jams due to all the outgoing people needing to turn left and right at the crossings. I'd estimate 90 mins then...
2] Yes Fort is more or less the city centre. Hotels there have lots of bars; other entertainment areas are along Galle Road towards Kollupitiya-Bambalapitiya and along Union Place (near Hilton Residence hotel) towards the southeast, including Ward Place near Odel's. Can't recommend specific hangout places, near our Colombo house we have our own family/friends ecosystem so no need for city centre visits for us.
3] Trafficwise Sunday evening still is better than Monday morning
4] Tuktuks (3-wheel taxis) are a bit quicker during traffic jams than 4-wheelers. Motorcycles are a lot quicker but not available in taxi form AFIK, you'd have to drive one yourself which would take a few weeks getting used to the traffic as a bystander before I'd do it.

All the best again,

& [Sandya]

Negombo

"Negombo"

Our first stop in Sri Lanka was Negombo which is a 20-30 minute ride from the airport. Our hotel here was Sea Shells and we had a nice room overlooking the beach. Negombo is a small place with not much to do but relax by the beach and visit the various restaurants and bars in the evening. Our driver did take us on a small tour of the place and we saw the many fishing boats and the busy town centre market area.

Negombo

Located about 10kl from Bandaranaike International Airport, Negombo is the ideal location to start or end a trip in Sri Lanka. It is a historically interesting town, with evident marks of its colonialist past; in Negombo someone finds Portuguese surnames, Dutch canals and numerous Catholic churches in a completely tropical environment!

wating for your flight...

by shiva70

Negombo is not that bad, it's a good place to relax a little after your long flight and get used to the tropical climate. So my advice is to stay here for a couple of days doing nothing and then you'll be ready to go!!!
