I will also be going to Taiwan and am seeking information regarding the high speed train. My posting is just below yours. I have not received any replies yet either and would appreciate it if you get any information if you could foward it to me and I will do likewise. I have googled and still cannot find anything current. I believe it is operating as I receive an astronomical quote from a local Taiwanese travel agency to use the high speed train for a tour. Thanks, wayne424@vtmail.com

I just got off the phone with a Hotel I was booking for my trip to Kaoshiung and I asked them about the high speed train. Unfortunately it is not yet running. It is expected now to be up and running sometime in January but as the agent in Taiwan told me - Don't hold your breath! Good luck and safe trip. Wayne

When you are in Kaohsiung, you might as well check out the southernmost point of Taiwan--Kenting. Even though it's a very touristy place, it's my favorite place in Taiwan. It's around 3 hours drive from Kaohsiung and on the way there, you could see some very interesting local thing--only found in Taiwan--betelnut booths and scarcely dressed sexy betelnut girls. (Watch the road, guys!!!) The White Sand Bay is my personal favorite. You need a car to get there. Look at the pic. That's the White Sand Bay. Aren't we having a great time???!!!

Chichin Island. It's a little island off shore of Kaohsiung harbor where locals would go to have seafood and take a walk on the beach.
You get to take a ferryboat to get there!! It's fun!! You can also get your motorcycles or bikes on too. Also, there are lots of seafood eateries where you can choose your favorite seafood from the fish tank (alive and kicking!!) and tell the cook how you would like to have it. I love it!!!

Kao-hsiung County (chinese: °ª¶¯¿¤¥«)

by sunnywong

Located in the southern park of Taiwan, the city of Kaohsiung is the island's largest industrial center. It has stayed abreast of Taiwan's recent progress and prosperity; expanding and modernizing, the city strides into the 21st century as a newly emerging international metropolis. Beginning centuries ago, Kaohsiung was called "Dagou" or "Dahgu ,"transliterated from the name of local aborigines. Disturbed by the violence of pirates, in 1563,the "Takuo" tribe eventually moved to the site of present-day Pingtung city. This name persisted until 1920,when the city's name was changed to Kaohsiung.
