I am from Kaohsiung.
My favorite part is "Hsitzu Bay Scenic Area"
http://taiwan.wcn.com.tw/en/kaohsiung/hsitzu.shtml

and the best one is the "Chichin Scenic Area"
Chichin is a small island located cloase to Hsitzu Bay.
You can take a ferry to Chichin.(just about 10-15 min)
It only cost about 10-15 NT (0.5 USD)... like the bus fare.
It is pretty to see the Koashiung port and the beach and light house on
Chichin island is good.
Oh.... don't forget to enjoy the sea food there.

other famous place is like Fokuangshan(Light of Buddha Mountain)
http://taiwan.wcn.com.tw/en/kaohsiung/buddha.shtml
but it is about 1 or 2 hour away Kaohsiung city.

In the city,
I also recommand the love river and Wu-Fu 3 rd.
Liuho Night Market(Liuho 2nd Rd.) has a lot of delicious food.
San-Do Rd and Wu-Fu rd has some big department stores.
They are good for shopping.

Liuchiu Island

by kenmerk

Though no tropical paradise, Liuchiu island does make a good place to head to get away from Kaohsiung.

There are a few things to see out here. Some old traditional chinese homes of fishermen, caves, a sandy beach or two, and diving/snorkeling is also available.

It makes for a pretty enjoyable day to take the ferry out from Linyuan. (about a 30 minute ride...) Then rent a scooter to tour around the island, with a sunset beach party to end the day... (the beaches out here are 100% cleaner than those found around Kaohsiung...)

Kaohsiung 85 Observation Deck

by chewy3326

Probably the best view of the city of Kaohsiung is from the 74th floor observation deck of the Kaohsiung 85 Tower (Tuntex Skyscraper). For an inexpensive NT 100 (compared to NT 350 for Taipei 101), you can take a modestly fast elevator for about 1 minute up 75 floors, where you come out at a bar/lounge. Descend the staircase to the observation area, which offers views west, north, and east; the view to the south is blocked off. The observation deck is rarely visited (at least when I was there. But that was an overcast day); I stayed there for an hour and at times I had the entire floor to myself. The amenities here are not as expanded as Taipei 101; there is no gift shop, no mass damper to see. There are also no labels/plaques of the view.

Some notable features visible from the tower are the Kaohsiung Harbor, Love River, and Chengcing Lake.

Kaohsiung

"Industrial City"

Located in the south and originally called Dahgu, Kaohsiung is the island's most industrialized city.

Dahgu was disturbed by violent pirates in 1563 and was moved to the site of the present-day Pingtung city. The name was changed to Kaohsiung in 1920.
