Will be in town from Apr. 9-12. Just want to know if there are any public festivals or cultural events while I'm there.
Also would like to ask what unique souvenirs can be bought there that you can't get anywhere else. Have been to Taipei before so I already have some ideas on what's generally available but I'd like to purchase something different.
Thanks for any replies.
Looks like you will just miss QingMing day:

When I was in Kaohsiung I knew of nothing special to buy, specific to the area. If you hear anything, I'd be curious to learn.
Hi
If you decide to go to Pingshi to let off a Sky Lantern, they have these Wooden Cards you can mail directly from there - At the Taiwan Railroad Story House next to Jingtong Station, the terminal station on the Pingsi railway branch line.
Ithought it was cool, but someone had also mentioned that it was also available at the Kaohsiung Station.

Chiji is nearby sea and has rich fresh seafood.
Reasonable prices are generally available, for example 1 dish costs NT$100~200.
Cuttlefish, shrimp, sashimi and fish dishes are highly recommended.
I made a delightful man, who was part of our small tour group (An American Professor from Ohio), climb all the way to the top... I think he thanked me for it when he saw the view:-)
This was one of the view of Kaohsiung that we got from pagoda at Cheng Lake.
