metro times in taipei

by rkearns

hi VT'ers!
i'm arriving in taipei at 9:30 p.m. i will probably get out of the airport at ten or 10:30. do you know how long the metro runs? i assume it would run pretty late, but i don't know. i just know that i'm going to be scuffling around because it's the first time i have been there and i'll not know my way around. i will be going to a hostel, not sure which one at this point. i guess i've been a bit preoccupied with the "foreign-ness" of it all. let me know if i need to stay close to the metro the first night or if i can venture out and discover the city via metro.
thanks!
cheers,
regina

Assuming you're arriving into Taoyuan, the metro to that airport isn't finished yet. But in general, most trains go until around midnight.

Hi

There are a few Airport bus companies still running at that time. Just take the KuoKuang bus to Taipei Main Station.

Two popular Hostels .

http://happyfamily.tripod.com/
http://www.taipeihostel.com/

Buy the Easy Card when you get here-NTD500/- for metro and bus travel. automatic 20% discount on the Metro and 50% discount if you take a bus ride within an hour of your exit or vice versa. You can top up at any 7/11 (24Hrs)in increments of NTD100/- The deposit if NTD100/- plus any unused balance is refundable. There maybe a service charge of NTD20/

There are Free Country and City maps in English at the Tourist Info counter at the Airport and at the Taipei Main Station. The Metro Maps are also Free and very informative.

One thing in your favor-Taiwanese are very friendly and helpful.
Not sure which Passport you should carry but:
As a U.S. passport holder, you will be allowed to enter Taiwan without a visa for up to thirty days (no extensions permitted) as long as you have a passport valid for at least six months from the date of entry into Taiwan and have a confirmed return or onward air ticket. You must have already met any additional visa requirements for the next destination, if applicable.

Travel Tips for Taipei

Free Tour

by NedHopkins

Being democratic -- if a bit authoritarian -- Taiwan is what all of China might be if it were not ruled by the Communist Party and its mostly geriatiric chieftains. Its people are no more industrious or enterprising than those on the mainland. But their social-economic-political system has given the Chinese on Taiwan a far higher standard of living. To encourage tourism, the Taiwan airport offers a free three- or four-hour tour of Taipei.

The green image shown here is actually walking. It starts walking slowly at the beginning and accelerates the speed til is almost running when time's running out, then stops and turns itself into red color.

This shopping mall is the biggest in Taipei. Shop for everythings. Most branded clothes are available. A shopping mall that built in a big globe which you can find lots of funny items. Almost everything is quite expensive but still affortable. Getting some local craft.

All I know, is that going to...

by John195123

All I know, is that going to Vietnam, you go through Taipei (on EVA Air). If you fly from Los Angeles, you arrive and depart from Taiwan from the new airport building. But, going back to the States, if you fly to San Francisco, you arrive in the new airport, but leave from the old one.

Spicy Korea

by yatingchen about Korea food hall

Simple decoration, offers nice food with ok price.

Each person is served with 3 small plates vegetable and soup.

Korean spicy rice: using spoon to stirr the food in bowel until well mixed. Loal taste.
Korean spicy rice cake: spicy, spicy, spicy. The taste is real korean and the price is good.
