I forgot to tell you that there are several night markets all over taipei that have street food vendors, you can find them on the maps when you get a free guide at the airport. there are mom and pop shops everywhere that serves good food and there is also many large department stores that have a dining area in there. When I was there I was taken out everyday to noodle shops, local foods and seafood, but never knew the names or the areas as i was a tourist and the host drove us here and there so quickly. everything looks the same, just different areas of town. Every neighborhood has restaurants to go to, so just ask around there and the natives can point the way. If you go far distances, make sure you know of the land marks which I always circle to know how to get back home. Cheers Tommy x

Dear rkearns:

Since you mentioned snake alley, I bet you're not the new 1st time comer here. Markets like Shi-Ling night market, Rao-He night market and Hua-Xi Street night market would catch your eyes and persuade your stomache to seek food there again. How strange to you it depends on what you couldn't bear or you didn't even think about "that is food!" Thus, maybe you will encounter lots of them, in terms: we called it food, and go surprise yourself!

Directions of them are below:

Shi-Ling night market: Exit No.1, Jian-Tan MRT-Red Line

hi, you must go to shilin night market! they have a lot of delicacies there - best place for street food in taiwan i think! most of the stalls sell the same stuff, but some are more popular than the other, so you need to know which are the good ones :)

i been to taipei last december, and i've blogged about it at

Travel Tips for Taipei

by miner

We hired a cab for several hours and he took us out in the country and up into the hills to a school.I photographed some of the kids there and they really enjoyed hamming itup for a camera.Unfortunately my camera was broken and none of my pictures came out. We had a huge meal at a big beautiful hotel. The Grand Hotel may have been the name of itbut I am not certain.

Catch a Professional Baseball Game

by AKtravelers

Like Japan and Korea, Taiwan has its own professional baseball league and Taipei is the best place to catch a game. You'll have to ask a local to tell you when the games are because the schedule is rarely posted in the English language press, but a good number of games are scheduled in the new Tienmu Stadium. The level of play in Taiwan is equivelent to that of Korea, and you're likely to see a few American and Latin American players on the field. Unfortunately, in recent years, Taiwan's major leagues have been embroiled in scandals associated with organized crime and gambling (some players got kidnapped a few years ago by gangsters, for example), so this has kept attendance down and affected some teams' viability.
The picture to the left was taken at the new Tienmu Stadium (Camden Yards in Baltimore it is not!). The photo is of a Japan-Australia match up in the 2001 World Cup of Baseball. It was easy to get tickets to the game and Japan won 8-0. Up until this time, I had never heard of the World Cup of Baseball, but it was played again this year and Cuba won for the 8th straight time. The level of professional participation from North American countries is the equivelent of high minor league, which is why I have rarely met an American or Canadian who knows the tournament exists, though both the U.S. and Canada had teams in the round-robin. A real Major League version of the Baseball World Cup would be great though, wouldn't it?

Shilin Night Market

by ShirlyZ

Shi Lin is best known for hosting Taipei's largest night market, the Shihlin Night Market. Once the sun goes down, residents and tourists throng to the area squeezing amongst street vendors and food stalls.

The night market are divided into 2 sections. The area close to Temple is filled mainly with stalls for snack food, and the area around the movie theater has many small shops where you can buy all kinds of cheap products.

Specialties of the Shihlin Night Market pancake ( red bean wrapped into a pancake), smelly tau Foo, teppanyaki, oyster omelettes and much more. Sport shoes and T-shirts would be the ideal iteams get from Shilin.

OF COS, do not forget the Junk Foods!

Save money for transport

by ngcsc

If you are travelling in Taipei for at least 1 week, don't forgot to buy an "Easy Card".

An "Easy Card" cost NT500, it is NT100 Deposit and NT400 value with the card. For adding value it is minimum 100 or its multiple.

With the "Easy Card", it is not only save the hassle to line up for ticket, most important, it save 20% of the fare. The card can use for Metro, buses and some parking in Taipei city.

You can get it in any Metro station and also adding value.

Salsa Latino

by esjaybeedee about Salsa Latino

Just great food in Spanish style, mixed with some Filipino influence. Price 1400 for two including wine.

Manager Shirley is an absolute mine of information about Taipei nightlife. It would seem there is nobody she doesn't know. Everthing is yummo
