Can anyone recommend a decent, reasonably-priced, 3- or 4-star hotel in the Shilin or Tianmu areas of Taipei (near Shilin or Zhishan metro stations)? Thanks in advance.

Ing-Ge is a small town that is a half hour's train trip south of Taipei. It is well known for it's beautiful clay ceramics and pottery. When you go there you will see many shops where you can buy anything from a cheap traditional ceramic flute to wonderfully sculpted art. Most of the time they have some kind of a sale happening, so you can usually buy much cheaper than the sticker price. On our last trip there we found some gorgeous pieces for 40% off. If you aren't interested in buying someone else's work, then you also have the option to get down and dirty and make something of your own. It'll cost 100 NT to make something out of clay on a wheel. It costs an extra 150 to bake and color it, which will take 2 weeks minimum. If you can't pick it up in 2 weeks they will ship up to 6 items to the same address for 150 NT. If you decide to make more items you can get an additional discount.
I'm allergic to smokes, so I hate going to places that allows people smoking indoor. Somehow, in Taiwan, you can smoke indoors if you don't feel like smoking outside in the cold. So I barely hang out with my friends in the bars, clubs anymore.
Maybe it's because it's been so long, so I decided to hang out with some friends that I didn't see for a long time. They picked a very nice little bar. I was impressed. People still smoke inside the bar but it didn't seem to be too smokey. I had a very good time there chatting with the good friends. No too noisy so you don't have to yell and shout. casual- no need to dress up.
It's a Chinese restaurant offering high-quality dumplings, Chinese, breads, noodles, fried rices, fried vegetables and soup. The restaurant was once ranked as one of top 10 in the world by New York Times but the price is not as high as its ranking at all. (Everyone can afford it easily.) Its decoration is simple with a little bit Chinese atmosphere. At lunch/dinner time there are always a lot of cutsomers waiting and standing in a long line in front of the gate. My favorite dishes are steamed pork dumplings, shrimp and pork shaomai and fried rice with eggs. The outside of the steamed pork dumplings is very thin. Once we bite the dumblings, the fresh pork juice flows immediately out full of mouth. The outside of shrimp and pork shaomai is less thin bit it's also very juicy. The shrimps on the top are fresh and complete. Although ingredient of fried rice with eggs are very simple (rice, egg and spring onion), it tastes good with nice smell proving the great cuisine technics of cook.
This resaurant is located in Tiapei 101 building, so it's quite easy to find its location. Food there isn't cheap either, but the restaurant has good atmosphere, with nice lighting enjoyable for all kinds of situations.
But I have to admit one thing, their service is HORRIBLE. Some waiters didn't hlep me when I waved them. I just had a nasi lemak. But i have to admit that, this nasi lemak is TOTALLY different from those in Malaysia or Singapore. This dish is supposed to be Muslim food, but I found pork in my plate, and they don't have spice sauce; they don't even have fried fish. Maybe nasi lemak here has been localised. I don't suggest those who never tried nasi lemak before to eat here first, IT would ruin your imagination of nasi lemak. The only thing correct in my plate was coconut rice.
During the week days, you can add USD3 for a set, which contains one cake, a salad and a drink. They don't serve a set of meal during weekends and holidays.
