Shilin is the area where the city's biggest night market is located. If you wish to stay at a place nearby then the Grand Hotel is the most reputable one there is (though I haven't stayed there), the market is about a 15-20 min. walk away. And the 2 places are along the MRT route so you could easily ride into downtown.

Shilin and Ximen are some distance apart but both are near MRT stations ( but on different lines ) and you can travel quickly and economically between the two.The MRT network is very good.
My first choice of hotel was the Rainbow ( in Ximen) but it was booked out. I ended up at the Brother which was very good and relatively inexpensive.
There is lots of young peoples shopping in Ximen, and lots of restaurants. Lots of food at the Shilin night markets as well.
I found the shopping at Taipei much cheaper than Singapore. There is a Sogo department store near Taipei Main Station and a lot of very smart shops near Taipei City Hall Station ( the station to go to Taipei 101).

Shilin and Ximen are not close but with some distance apart. Compare with this 2 location, i recommend you to stay in hotels in Ximen with are closed to MRT station. However, Taiwan hotels are quite full especially during weekend, so you may need to book early.

If you are going with your bf or gf, or even husband or wife, I suggest Burgary Hotel, a 4-star hotel. (I have stayed there before, it takes within 5 mins walks from MRT station)

If you go with your family, you may try City Inn, Forte Orange Business Hotel, Just Sleep. They are all clean and tidy.

BTW, there is a lot to choose, you may search from the website.

We are currently staying in Taipei, and for 5 days as well. We're staying at the Grandee Hotel Taipei, and love the place: boutique hotel, friendly staff, great breakfasts (included) and it's directly across the street from the Shilin night market, where you will find many many things you might be looking for regarding food and shopping. The hotel is also a 5-minute between two Metro stations and is easy to get to.
Aside from the night market, the neighborhood is not as busy in the daytime as Ximending. Ximending definitely has more stores and of course the Pedestrian Mall is always crowded. Metro access to the Mall is easy as well.
Hope this helps!

Travel Tips for Taipei

Ked si chcete obzriet cely...

by renuschka

Ked si chcete obzriet cely komplex budov Chiang Kai-shekovho Memorialu, staci sa vystverat na 46. poschodie mrakodrapu Shin Kong Mitsukoshi, ktory je zatial najvyssou dokoncenou stavbou v Taipei. Ale dlho uz nebude, lebo ho predbehne novy, skoro dva krat tak vysoky mrakodrap. Samozrejma len v pripade, ze im ho nejake zemetrasenie neskrati.

Shenkeng Tofu Street

by mim95

You can find tofu made in all kinds of way on this street in Shenkeng in Taipei County.

Unlike other places, the tofu here is handmade and free of plaster powder, which is why Shenkeng is well-known for its tofu. You can try it from the street vendors, or dine-in.

Don't forget to try the stinky tofu, they are the best!

Shilin Night Market

by mim95

A very crowded indoor night market with endless food stalls selling good and cheap food. There are tonnes of food that you can sample, such as oyster with eggs, Taiwanese sausage, papaya milk, squid soup....

There are also non-food selling vendors on the other side of the market. But it's much more quiet on that side for some reason.

MRT Around Taipei

by dixonchan

The most convenient way to get around Taipei. MRT is fast and inexpensive. A single trip cost between 20NT to 40NT.

If your stay in Taipei is more than 4 days and you intend to travel around frequently, get the stored value card. (They call it easy card). There is a 20% discount for every trip.

Or if you think you are going to take the MRT at least 8 times a day, get the day trip ticket. IT allows unlimited travel on the MRT for 150NT per day.

Shanghainese food

by aukahkay about Hong Dou Ci Fu

Forget about the over-rated Din Tai Fung restaurant in Taipei. You will have to make a reservation well in advance and queue up for about an hour. There are many other restaurants in Taipei serving equally good Shanghainese food. This restaurant, Hong Dou Ci Fu is one of them. The main branch is located in Minshen Road in the commercial district of Taipei. There is also branches at the SOGO Departmental Stores at Dunhua South Road and Zhongshiao East Road. Xiao Long Bao - Shanghainese dumplings
Dongpo Pork - braised pork Shanghainese style
Chong You Bing - Chinese pizza
Steamed Soon Hock fish
