wifi in taipei?

by rkearns

hi vt'ers!
i'll be in taipei through the month of january and i think i want to bring my netbook (so when i'm home alone i won't get bored and can surf the net). what are your recommendations for places that have wifi during the day? and if i stay at a hostel, do you think many of them have wifi? what about outside of taipei like huailien?

thanks for your responses and cheers!
regina

Hi

In Taiwan we have Wifly:
http://www.wifly.com.tw/Wifly7/en/

Kismetau posted in TA re prepaid sim card with prepaid data plan for mobile phones.
I went with (Taiwan Mobile) & bought the combined data & ph sim for NT645 (NT350 is for sim card & NT295 for call credit). This can last you up to 5 days and you can always check your credit balance by dialing *867# . You can keep the same number for up to 6mths.

If you run out of credit you can always visit the nearest 7-11 (which are everywhere in Taiwan) and purchase a NT300, $600 or $1000 additional credit. I got good coverage everywhere I went (I usually stayed in main cities) so highly recommend it!

As you exit out of customs at Taoyuan airport, there is a desk with 3 counters selling the sim cards from 3 different companies. Chunghwa sells the sim for ph & data separately, so not so convenient. Since I'm from Australia, I needed to show my passport & drivers license to make a purchase - I believe the second form of ID must be a photo one too.

What's you accomodation budget. Many 3* hotels have free internet and some have the connections in the room, you just bring your own Notebook.

Did you have a good day , my...

by kiely

Did you have a good day , my dearest friend ? I think , sometime we all need to relax like this , don't we ?

A friend .

A friend should be radical .
They should love you when you are unlovable .
Hug you when you are unhuggable .
And bear with you when you are un bearable .
A friend should be fanatical .
They should cheer when the whole world boos .
Dance when you get good news .
And cry when you cry too .
But most of all a friend should be mathmatical .
They should mutiply the joy ,
Divide the sorrow ,
Substract the past ,
And add to tomorrow .
Calculate the need deep in your heart ,
And always be bigger than the sum of all parts .

Traditional Chinese Specialty Tea

by THLIN about Ten Ren Chinese Tea

First of all, I have spent one term studying Ten Ren's strategy and history.
Ten Ren has more than 100 beanches worldwide, and they mainly locates in the States, Canada, Malyasia and I know one in China Town in Singapore. Ten Ren is the frist company that makes their own brand name for selling specialty tea in Taiwan. Taiwan has exported tea for more than a century, but, ironically, they are the first. They privides standardised service and high-quality tea.
With the advent of e-commerce, you can also buy from their website, which is provided below. If you want to buy something as a gift, buy a bag of Chinese tea; if you want to please yourself in the shop, buy a cup of bubble tea, which you can enjoy immediately. Their bubble tea is quite famous here also, but it cost two folds of their competitions. It depends. The prices of their products vary with a large range. Because the quality can differ from one to another due to different place of leaves' sources.

Good food and service

by chewy3326 about Din Tai Feng

Din Tai Feng (Din Tai Fung) is the considered by many people to be the best restaurant in Taipei (The New York Times once called it one of the best in the world). The restaurant lives up to the hype, though the crowds and lines here will make me reconsider coming back.

Despite the immense number of customers, Din Tai Feng's service is fast and very good, and it's food lives up to its fame (with one exception, a bowl of wild chicken noodles; stick with the xiao long bao related foods while you're there).

Because of its popularity, Din Tai Fung has branched out, and you can now taste the same food in Japan and Los Angeles. Well, of course, the xiao long bao (small steam dumpling); meat wrapped in a small steamed bun, folded delicately, probably the best I've ever had (with the possible exception of a restaurant in the New York Chinatown, now closed).
