My Wife and I stayed there after arriving by train. This was our third stay there. It is perfect for any age of traveller and I believe it really is quite different then YMCA's in Canada as it is a hotel, although they do cater to the young backpackers....Which we used to be....oh so looong ago.....
Very friendly people at the front desk and the room was a nice size, double beds, cable TV, fridge and web access and very quiet.
There is a restaurant near the lobby and there are many other restaurants near by so it was quite the choice.
Highly recommended as it is so close to everything. The train station is about a 2 minute walk, Taipei subway sytem is a short walk away and is also very close to the airport bus terminal....and lots of places to shop.

We were placed there by our Taiwanese friend....we told here that we'd need smth (anything) CHEAP to stay during 3 weeks, and she found this, 60€/night/room(2-3 beded)

I've never stayed in Taipei YMCA but after check their price--it's quite expensive.
Unique Quality: Close to the Taipei main station.

The location is good! It is just next to MRT (Taipei Main Station) and Train station. And there are a lot of convenient shops and eating outlets nearby, so no need to worry that you will get hungry :D The room is cosy.. u feel like u are at home.
There is a toilet inside every room, and there is a machine for hot / warm / cold water at each level.
I stayed at YMCA International Guest House in Taipei. The hotel is very close to Taipei Station. It is very convinient.
Anybody out there recently stay at the First Hotel or the YMCA Taipei?
I know the First Hotel was opened in 2000 but I wonder how well it has been maintained? also thinking of staying at the YMCA - good location but if someone has recently stayed there and can give me a review of how well the rooms are maintained -that would be great.

Hi,
I don't think First Hotel was opened in 2000, it is a very old hotel opened in the 1980s. I have stayed there during first trip to Taiwan in 2000. Frankly not a pleasant stay, the carpets and walls are stained and I can see strands of hair in the bathtub. It's fortunate that it's only a night's stay as it was inclusive in a tour package.
thank you for your reply . some travelers wrote a review that it was a new hotel I think it must have been remodeled. But not sure when.???
