Guidebooks on Taiwan in English and Chinese

by lugubres

Hi fellow VTs

I would appreciate your suggestions guidebooks on Taiwan. I am interested in guidebooks in English as well as any in Chinese. I can read Chinese. For English, I have only come across Lonely Planet and Rough Guide but they are much too old, published in 2007. Can anyone recommend anything in English and Chinese (separate books) that is 2010?

Thank you

Travel Tips for Taiwan

Things to do in Taipei

by Applelyn

You must go and try the following---Pork Chop Rice, Oyster Mee Suan, Muai Chee(from Ma Zu), Meat Balls(the HUGE ones--Bak Wan), Xian Su Chicken, Sticky Rice with mushrooms and Gao Shan Cha(tea from the mountains).
Xi Men Ting Night market is good place to shop. You can bargain your way through and should.
You can also try the fortune teller fron Long2 Shan1 Shi4...Very Interesting..Accuracy--No guarantee!!
For the food, you must go to "Shilin" night market. Try the Oyster Pancake and Squid Soup.
"Dan4 Shui3 Lao3 Jie1" is also a good day time shopping area.
For seafood lovers, you must go to Ji Long. Cheap and good. Unforgettable Memory:
* Hiding myself in the basement when they set off the fire crackers at the entrance of the stairways. Blame it on not being able to experience fire crackers in Singapore---"kidding"

* Experiencing earthquake in Taiwan and refusing to get out of the building because it was very cold.

Best Memory:
Rearing silkworms, climbing mountains and setting off firecrackers with my cousins.

I missed the food................Muai Chee and Oyster Mee Suan

High Speed Train

by Kyle-Taiwan

There is now a running high speed rail in Taiwan. This rail goes from north to south on the west hitting all the major cities. From Kaohsiung to Taipei is only about 2 hours by this train.

The disadvantage is you don't get to see much, but if time is important, its useful!

Taiwan the Pinang island

by marktheline

"Politeness"

Society in Taiwan is tinted with Japanese culture. The people are full of service spirit that you'd feel very welcome there.
For anyone who can speak Hokkien, Mandarin or Japanese, you'd have no language barrier. However, English is not widely spoken in Taiwan. Therefore, it is a real setback on communication for most foreigners.

My home town : Taiwan

by mmarcos

"The most beautiful lake in Taiwan"

Taiwan is a modern industrialised megalopolis clinging to the fringes of an ancient culture; a string of teeming cities at the feet of a glorious mountain range. It's traditional noodles from a 7-Eleven, aboriginal tribes in mini-skirts and a day of temple rituals followed by waterslide rides. The human tide of Taipei will sweep you off your feet, but if you step outside the city limits you'll discover why Taiwan is known as Ilha Formosa, 'the beautiful island'. Mountain peaks puncture a sea of clouds, slick black volcanic rock wraps the coastlines and waterfalls shroud themselves in mist: Taiwan is a computer-generated Chinese watercolour.
